Four Falcons capture CIAA weekly basketball awards

The CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) honored Chris Jordan (Houston, Texas), Keyona Bryant (Springdale, Md.) and first-year head coaches Lonnie Blow Jr. and Margaret Richards of Saint Augustine’s College on Monday (Dec. 8).

Jordan, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound junior guard, was named men’s basketball player of the week. He averaged 21 points in two games last week including a career-high 35 points in a 77-55 victory over Virginia Union University. Jordan made 12 of 15 field goals including 9 of 11 three-point field goals in helping the Falcons end a six-game home losing streak to the Panthers.

Bryant, a 6-foot freshman center, was chosen as women’s basketball rookie of the week for the second straight time. She averaged 23.5 points in two games last week including 35 points in a 77-71 upset win over 17th-ranked Shaw University, the defending CIAA champion. It was her second consecutive game of 30 or more points.

Head Coach Lonnie Blow Jr. was selected as men’s basketball coach of the week. He directed the Falcons to a 2-0 record last week including easy wins over archrival Shaw (78-57) and perennial CIAA powerhouse Virginia Union (77-55). The victory over the Panthers not only snapped a six-game home losing streak but also marked the Falcons’ largest margin of victory in the series in recent memory.

Head Coach Margaret Richards was named women’s basketball coach of the week. She led the Lady Falcons to a stunning 77-71 victory over 17th-ranked Shaw last week in the biggest victory of her brief coaching career. The win ended a 12-game losing streak to the Lady Bears and was the first win in the series for the Lady Falcons since January 2001.
