Saint Augustine’s College debate team

The Belk Professional Development Center

Employee Giving Month

The Employee Giving Month campaign has been extended to Nov. 15. The goal is 100 percent participation. All faculty and staff members are asked to participate with a donation of any amount so we can meet the goal. For more information, call 516-4092 or e-mail development@st-aug.edu.

 

Fall UNCF scholarship workshop

The Office of Financial Aid will host a UNCF scholarship workshop Thursday, Nov. 13, and Friday, Nov. 14, at the Prezell R. Robinson Library. The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to noon, with sessions beginning every 30 minutes on the half hour. Thanksgiving variety show

The Student Leaders Organization presents the third annual Thanksgiving variety show Friday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Seby Jones Auditorium. Tickets are $2 at door. Admission is free with two canned goods.

 

Lyceum Series

Dr. David Beito, a University of Alabama history professor, will speak at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, in the Seby Jones Art Gallery as part of the Saint Augustine’s College Lyceum Series. Beito will present his lecture, “From Mutual Aid to the Welfare State: Fraternal Societies and Social Services, 1890-1967.” Call 516-4355 for more information.

 

ACLU executive director to speak to class

Jennifer Rudinger, executive director of the North Carolina ACLU, will address the students of LIS221.03 Terrorism: Meaning and Media in Boyer 201, Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 1 p.m. She will discuss the USA PATRIOT Act, subsequent legislation, and balancing domestic security and civil rights. Interested parties not enrolled in the class should contact Dr. Stephen Scholz at 516-4108 or sgscholz@st-aug.edu to attend. Space is limited. Christmas card design contest

The Office of Institutional Advancement and Development is looking for one great Christmas card design, and it’s asking all students to get involved. Submit your card designs to Hunter Building, Room 105B, or development@st-aug.edu. The winning design will be featured on a Christmas card mailed to the College’s alumni and friends. Proposal Budgeting Basics

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at Saint Augustine’s College will present Proposal Budgeting Basics on Friday, Nov. 21, from 2-3 p.m., in the Martin Luther King Building conference room. This workshop is designed to provide the basics of putting together a project budget and is geared toward those who have little or no knowledge of project budget development.

The Wellness Center

Habitat for Humanity hosts homeowner workshops

You may qualify for a home built by Habitat for Humanity of Wake County. Homeowners are selected based on their need for housing, ability to pay an interest-free mortgage and willingness to partner with Habitat. Because of Habitat’s non-profit loans and because the houses are mostly built with staff-led volunteer labor, mortgage payments are affordable for people with modest incomes.

NASPA Conference

Dr. Ronald H. Brown, vice president of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, will be giving the opening and welcome address Thursday, Nov. 13, at the NASPA (Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education) conference in Atlanta, Ga. Dr. Brown is the coordinator of the NASPA HBCU Advisory Board.

 

Faculty presents at conference in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Linda R. Hubbard, assistant vice president for Faculty and Development, and Ms. Marece Gibbs Mayo, assistant director for First Year Experience, presented at the HBCU Faculty Development Network’s 15th National HBCU Faculty Development Symposium, “Closing the Loop: Research, Assessment & Curriculum Design.” The title of their presentation was “Context of Culture: Integrating Diversity and Globalization in the Humanities and Social Sciences.” The conference was held Oct. 23-25 at the Kellogg Conference Hotel at Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C.

Lady Falcons place second in CIAA Western Division bowling tournament

Senior Antoinette Bailey bowled the fifth-best tournament average to lead Saint Augustine's College to a second-place finish Sunday, Nov. 9, in the first CIAA Western Division women's bowling tournament of the season at B&B Bowling Lanes in Fayetteville

 

The Lady Falcons scored 20 points and posted an 8-4 record over three days, which was the second-best at the tournament. The team handed defending CIAA champion Fayetteville State its first loss in a match in three seasons, defeating the Lady Broncos 823-740 on Saturday, Nov. 8.

 

Shuping places 24th at NCAA Division II cross country regional

Johnny Shuping finished 24th Saturday, Nov. 8, out of 165 runners at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Cross Country Regional at Cooper's Lake Campground. Shuping, the 2008 CIAA men's individual cross country champion, ran a time of 33:23 which was the best of any CIAA runner at the meet.

 

Lady Falcons end volleyball season in CIAA semifinals

Saint Augustine’s College defeated Virginia State and Johnson C. Smith in pool play during the 2008 CIAA Volleyball Championships, but lost to Fayetteville State University in the semifinals over the weekend (Nov. 7-9) at Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton, Va.

The Lady Falcons finished the season at 15-16 overall which is a six-win improvement over last season. The team finished second in the Western Division and tied for the third-best CIAA record (8-5) during the regular season.

 

Falcons open basketball season at Davis & Elkins Tournament

Saint Augustine’s College begins its men’s basketball season this weekend at the Davis & Elkins Tournament at The McDonnell Center in Elkins, W. Va. The Falcons meet Mercyhurst College on Saturday, Nov. 15, and faces either host Davis & Elkins College or UNC Pembroke on Sunday (Nov. 16) at either 2 p.m. or 4 p.m. The Falcons, led by first-year coach Lonnie Blow Jr., return six players, including preseason All-CIAA picks Will Gill and Hayward Fain.

 

Lady Falcons Head To Florida For Season Debut This Weekend

Saint Augustine’s College begins the 2008-09 women’s basketball season in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., this weekend at the Nova Southeastern University Marriott Tip-Off Classic at NSU Center Arena. The Lady Falcons play host Nova Southeastern University on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 5 p.m. and Barry University on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m. The Lady Falcons, 18-10 overall last season, return eight players including preseason All-CIAA players Allison Sikes and LeKiesha White.
