Fittings for Convocation attire

Student cap and gown fittings for the 142nd Annual Convocation will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Campus Bookstore through Sept. 20. Faculty and staff are also asked to stop by the campus bookstore to be fitted for academic regalia. A representative will be available until Thursday, Sept. 18.

All faculty and staff members are expected to participate in Convocation.

Constitution Day

The Department of History, Government & Public Policy will sponsor the College's annual Constitution Day program Thursday, September 18, at 11 a.m. in Seby Jones Auditorium. The guest speaker will be Superior Court Judge Ola Lewis from Southeastern North Carolina.

 

Electoral Action Training

The United States Student Association and Campus Camp Wellstone will present Electoral Action Training Sept. 20-21 at Saint Augustine’s College. The sessions are designed to increase the number of students registered to vote, increase student voting on campus and develop effective student leaders. Fall Convocation

Fall Convocation is at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 25. The keynote speaker will be the Rev. William Barber, president of the North Carolina NAACP State Conference of Branches.

 

“An Unexpected Egypt

The Division of Liberal Arts and Education and the Honors Program will host a special screening of “An Unexpected Egypt” at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25 in Seby Jones Auditorium. The documentary, produced by the Theatre and Film program, chronicles the 2008 study tour to Egypt. A reception and question/answer session will follow the screening.  Honda Campus All-Star Challenge

Each year, American Honda invites teams from 64 historically black colleges and universities to compete in the Honda All-Star Challenge Tournament in Orlando, Fla. The winning team earns $50,000 in grant money for its school. Saint Augustine’s College’s campus tournament is Sept. 23-25. After the campus tournament, several players will be invited to join the varsity squad. Selected members of the varsity squad will compete at the nationals March 26-30. Graduate school forum

Representatives from Virginia State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will host a graduate school forum from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30 in the MLK Student Union. Free lunch will be provided to the first 50 students to sign up. For more information, contact the Belk Career Center in Goold Hall, Suite 001.

 

Voter registration

Want to make your voice heard in this historic presidential race and have a say in who leads local government? Oct. 10 is the last day to register for the November elections. Students can register in Wake County or request an absentee ballot if they’ve already registered in their hometowns.

 

Scholarship opportunities for journalism students

Journalism and Communication students are encouraged to apply for the Triangle Association of Black Journalists (TABJ) scholarships. Winners will be recognized at the TABJ Scholarship Gala on Oct. 25, at the Embassy Suites in Cary, NC. Scholarships up to $2,000 will be awarded. Applications are available on the TABJ web site at  www.geocities.com/nctabj/downloads/TABJScholarshipApp08.doc. The scholarship application deadline is Sept. 30.

 

Fall Career Fair

The Belk Career Center will sponsor a career fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, in the MLK Student Union. Students should come professionally dressed and bring several copies of their resume. For more information or help developing a resume, visit Goold Hall, Suite 001.

Falcons Lose to Mars Hill 31-14

Tailback Arnold Mullins (Philadelphia, Pa.) rushed for 98 yards on 22 carries for Saint Augustine’s College, but the Falcons lost 31-14 to non-conference football foe Mars Hill College Saturday (Sept. 13) at Broughton High School Stadium.

The Falcons gained 300 total offensive yards and scored two second-half touchdowns. Anthony Brown (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tossed a 1-yard pass to Jone’ Harris (Fairfield, Calif.) in the third quarter, and Kris Brownlee (Philadelphia, Pa.) entered the game in the fourth quarter and heaved a pass which deflected into the hands of Damon Gibson (Suitland, Md.) for a 41-yard touchdown pass on the game’s last play. Adison Daniels (Raleigh, N.C.) booted both extra points for the Falcons.

The Falcons begin CIAA conference play Sept. 20 at Virginia State. Game time is 6 p.m. The Lions travel to West Liberty State for a 1 p.m. non-conference contest.
