Fall Convocation is at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 25. The keynote speaker will be the Rev. William Barber, president of the North Carolina NAACP State Conference of Branches.
“An Unexpected Egypt”
The Division of Liberal Arts and Education and the Honors Program will host a special screening of “An Unexpected Egypt” at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, in Seby Jones Auditorium. The documentary, produced by the Theatre and Film program, chronicles the 2008 study tour to Egypt. A reception and question/answer session will follow the screening. Honda Campus All-Star Challenge
The Honda Campus All-Star Challenge tournament is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, and Wednesday, Sept. 24, in the Seby B. Jones Fine Arts Gallery. After the campus tournament, several players will be invited to join the varsity squad. Selected members of the varsity squad will compete at the nationals March 26-30. LiveText training
The Division of Liberal Arts and Education hosts training for the LiveText Accreditation Management System from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. Participants will learn how to develop an e-portfolio. Those who plan to attend should take their transcript, plan of study, fall 2008 schedule and Praxis test scores. College choir to perform in Charlotte
The Saint Augustine’s College Choir, conducted by Eric Poole, joins the choir and congregation of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church for the All Angels Celebration in Charlotte on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 5 p.m. This service celebrates the 125th anniversary of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church and will take place at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church located at 115 West 7th Street in downtown Charlotte. Join Saint Augustine’s College alumni and friends as the college choir shares in this service. Graduate school forum
Representatives from Virginia State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will host a graduate school forum from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, in the MLK Student Union. Want to make your voice heard in this historic presidential race and have a say in who leads local government? Oct. 10 is the last day to register for the November elections. Students can register in Wake County or request an absentee ballot if they’ve already registered in their hometowns. Scholarship opportunities for journalism students
Journalism and Communication students are encouraged to apply for the Triangle Association of Black Journalists (TABJ) scholarships. Winners will be recognized at the TABJ Scholarship Gala on Oct. 25 at the Embassy Suites in Cary. Scholarships up to $2,000 will be awarded. Applications are available on the TABJ web site at www.geocities.com/nctabj/downloads/TABJScholarshipApp08.doc. The scholarship application deadline is Sept. 30.
Battle of the classes
The junior class will be hosting a student battle of the classes entitled “St. Aug’s Best Class.” The event is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m. The price of admission is $3 at the door. Fall Open House
The Office of Admissions will host Fall Open House on Saturday, Oct. 25. Each division/department is asked to have a representative at the fair to staff a table to address any questions prospective students may have. Please plan to have literature for at least 100 prospective students. Set-up will be in the Martin Luther King Jr. student union ballroom; representatives will have to be set up by 10 a.m. The deadline for indicating who will represent your division/area, as well as requests for any special set up is Friday, Oct. 3. William Jefferson Jackson banquet
The Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Alumni Chapter presents the 2008 William Jefferson Jackson Annual Honors Banquet to benefit Saint Augustine’s College. The event is Friday, Oct. 17, from 8 p.m. to midnight at La Fontaine Bleu, 7963 Annapolis Road, Lanham, Md. Honorees for this year’s banquet are Dr. George A. Boyd (’50), Novella Ford-Wright (’72), Orabelle Wright-Price (’76), Constance J. Washington (’76) and Mable Wright, who will receive special recognition. Tickets are available for a $50 donation. CTL workshops
The Center for Teaching and Learning at Saint Augustine’s College will offer the following workshops:
- Sept. 24, 2-3 p.m., MLK Ballroom; Expertiza, A Peer Review System for Collaborative Learning: Expertiza is a Web-based application for collaborative learning. Students can work individually or in teams, with all members having access to the same documents, or they can compose their work on a wiki. Students are assigned to review other individuals or teams anonymously. Authors may also give feedback to reviewers anonymously. All of these evaluations are presented to the instructor to use in assigning a grade.
- Oct. 17, 2-3 p.m.; An Introduction to Grant Development: This workshop serves as an introduction to the process of developing a grant proposal for federal and state agencies. It will cover the entire spectrum of planning to submission. An overview of each section of a grant application will be presented along with important writing tips. No previous proposal writing experience is assumed.
- Nov. 21, 2-3 p.m.; Proposal Budgeting Basics: This workshop is designed to provide assistance with the basics of developing a project budget that is geared for those who have general to no knowledge of proposal development.

Lady Falcons sweep CIAA volleyball honors
After a weekend of strong conference play, Saint Augustine’s College’s Lady Falcons swept CIAA volleyball honors last week. Brittany Watts (Severn, MD) was named CIAA player of the week, Roxanne Smith (St. Catherine, Jamaica) was chosen as CIAA rookie of the week, and Head Coach Covance Mortimer was selected as CIAA coach of the week.
Watts, a sophomore outside hitter, was named CIAA top player for the second straight week. She totaled 54 kills and 66 digs in 21games. Smith, a freshman setter, amassed 72 assists and 78 digs in 21 games. Mortimer led the Lady Falcons to a 3-2 record in the CIAA Volleyball Round-Up in Fayetteville, N.C., last weekend including three straight victories.
Mullins rushes for career-high
Sophomore tailback Arnold Mullins (Philadelphia, Pa.) of Saint Augustine’s College rushed for a career-high 135 yards on 24 carries Saturday (Sept. 20) against Virginia State University. Mullins gained the second-highest rushing total since the Falcons re-instituted football in 2002. Former Falcon Travoris Carter set the record for most rushing yards in one game when he gained 144 yards against Edward Waters College in 2003.
The Falcons lost to Virginia State University 6-3 on a last-second field goal. Their next game is Saturday (Sept. 27) against Elizabeth City State University in the Down East Viking Classic in Rocky Mount, N.C. The game starts at 4 p.m. at Rocky Mount Athletic Complex.
Lady Falcons top Livingstone 3-0 in volleyball
Junior outside hitters Curby Rogers (St. Paul, Minn.) and Casey Williams (Rocky Mount, N.C.) both had nine kills as Saint Augustine’s College blanked Livingstone College 3-0 in CIAA Western Division volleyball action Friday (Sept. 19) at Emery Gymnasium. The victory lifted the Lady Falcons’ record to 5-8 overall, 5-3 in the CIAA and 2-1 in the Western Division. The Lady Blue Bears fell to 5-5, 3-3 and 0-1.
Sophomore middle blocker Stephony Newkirk (Greenville, N.C.) added eight kills and freshman setter Roxanne Smith (St. Catherine, Jamaica) contributed 23 assists for the Lady Falcons, who won by a score of 25-18, 25-19, 25-21.
