Health and Fitness Weight Loss Challenge

Does your New Year’s resolution include losing weight but your budget won’t allow for membership at a high priced gym? The Saint Augustine’s College Wellness Center has the solution for an accelerated healthy weight loss challenge that you can achieve in just four weeks. From January 5 through February 5, Phase II fitness trainers will work with you to determine your individual goals through weight-lifting, aerobics, or one-on-one workouts with a certified personal trainer on state-of-the-art fitness equipment. The four-week Health and Fitness Challenge will start you on the right track to losing those pounds gained over the holidays and help you keep them off. The goal is to produce the most unbelievable results in 30 days. The first week of the four week challenge is free. There will be a grand prize for the biggest loser.  Sign up today. Martin Luther King Birthday celebration  

All this week, the Prezell R. Robinson Library will present a series of videos and documentaries depicting the life and times of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the contributions he made to our history. The presentations will be held at 6 p.m. Monday through Friday in the second floor foyer of the library.

 

Student Leaders Welcome Back service

The Student Leaders Organization invites the Saint Augustine’s College community to a “Welcome Back” Chapel Service on Sunday, January 18, at 10:30 a.m. 2008 graduate Dexter A. Hinson will be the guest speaker.

 

44th Presidential Inauguration

Students, faculty and staff are invited to watch Barack Obama’s inauguration Tuesday, January 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Seby Jones Auditorium and the Martin Luther King Jr. Building. Students can also watch the historic event in Goold Hall. A discussion session will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Seby Jones Auditorium. Classes will not be canceled, but faculty members are encouraged to take their classes to one of the sites.

 

Habitat for Humanity information session

Habitat for Humanity of Wake County will host a Lunch and Learn session about its homeownership program, qualification requirements and how to apply. The session will be from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, January 23, in the conference room on the second floor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Building. Please bring your lunch for this information session. Ladies Night with violinist Ken Ford

President Dianne Boardley Suber presents “Ladies Night” featuring electric violinist Ken Ford Thursday, January 29, at Emery Gymnasium. Doors open at 7 p.m. A fashion show begins at 7:30 p.m., and Ken Ford’s performance begins at 8 p.m. Heavy hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served. You must be at least 21 to attend this event. Sapphire Gala tickets available

Tickets are on sale now for the Annual Sapphire Scholarship Gala, which will be Saturday, January 31, at the North Raleigh Hilton. Tickets are $75 for faculty and staff and $150 for the general public. A silent auction begins at 7 p.m. and the gala begins at 8 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by The Temptations featuring Dennis Edwards. For more information or for tickets, call 516-4092.

William Jefferson Jackson Scholarship Available – Apply Now
About the Scholarship: The William Jefferson Jackson Scholarship is a memorial scholarship to honor William, who graduated from Saint Augustine’s College in 1949. William’s family, with the assistance of the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Alumni Chapter distributes an annual scholarship of $2,000 to honor his legacy; his commitment to Saint Augustine's College; and his belief that alumni should give back to their alma mater in the form of money and/or time.

Who Can Apply: Full-time students, actively pursuing undergraduate studies at Saint Augustine's College, who will be classified as first-year seniors in September are eligible to apply. A minimum grade point average of 2.75 is required. The scholarship is open to students regardless of their field of study. See application for more information.

Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program

The Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (MURAP) is a paid summer fellowship designed to foster the entrance of talented students from diverse backgrounds in fields such as the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts into graduate school and faculty positions in U.S. colleges and universities. More specifically, the program seeks to increase the presence of minorities and others who demonstrate a commitment to eradicating racial disparities in graduate school and, eventually, in academic ranks. The session will be May 25 through July 30. Corporate and Foundation Grant Opportunities

Professional Development

The NEA Foundation is accepting applications for its Learning & Leadership Grants program which provides opportunities for teachers, education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff to engage in high-quality professional development and lead their colleagues in professional growth. Grants to individuals fund participation in professional development experiences such as summer institutes and action research. Grants to groups fund collegial study, including study groups, action research, lesson study, and mentoring experiences for faculty or staff new to an assignment. The grant amount is $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups. Religion

Applications are being accepted for pastoral-leadership grants from the Louisville Institute, with support from the Lilly Endowment, for research projects that reflect on the conditions of contemporary Christian ministry and pastoral leadership. Grants of up to $40,000 each will be awarded for up to a one-year period of research and writing. Applicants must be academics and pastors who have earned a Ph.D or terminal degree in their chosen vocations. Children and Youth

Letters of Inquiry are being accepted on regarding grants from the William T. Grant Foundation for research on social environments that affect the daily lives of youths ages 8 to 25, how these settings can be improved, and the use of research evidence in public policy that affects young people. Financial Literacy

The FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) Investor Education Foundation invites nonprofit groups and researchers to apply for funding for projects that support its mission of providing Americans with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary for financial success. Of particular interest to the foundation in 2009 are projects that focus on using behavioral finance to improve saving and investing, meeting the financial and investor education needs of underserved audiences, opening new marketing and distribution channels for financial and investor education, and helping Americans manage their finances in retirement. The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is encouraging educators across the United States to apply for 2009 summer study opportunities in the humanities. Each summer, the NEH supports rigorous national, residential seminars, institutes, and workshops located in the United States and abroad. Bryant racks up two more basketball honors

The list of accomplishments keeps growing for Saint Augustine’s College’s freshman basketball sensation, Keyona Bryant (Springdale, Md.).

 

The 6-foot Lady Falcon center was named Division II national women’s basketball player of the week by Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN). She was selected by an Internet fan poll which runs each Monday through Wednesday during the basketball season.

 

Bryant also captured the CIAA women’s basketball rookie of the week award for the third straight week on Monday, January 12.

 

Bryant, a 6-foot center, is the first player to win the weekly honor three consecutive times since the 2004-05 season.

 

This is the fifth time in seven weeks that Bryant was named the CIAA’s top female rookie. Bryant is tied for second in scoring (17.5 ppg) and ranks seventh in rebounding (7.2 rpg) in the CIAA.

 

Lady Falcons defeat Lady Lions 85-49

Sophomore guard LeKiesha White (Richmond, Va.) scored a game-high 21 points to lead four double-figure scorers as Saint Augustine’s College routed Lincoln (Pa.) University 85-49 Saturday, Jan. 10, in women’s basketball at Emery Gymnasium.

 

The 21 points tied a career-high for White, who shot 8 for 14 from the floor and recorded a game-high five steals. Freshman center Keyona Bryant (Springdale, Md.) added 14 points and seven rebounds and sophomore guard Crystal McCaffity (Havelock, NC) scored 12 points off the bench.

 

Sophomore forward Allison Sikes (Richmond, Va.) played an all-around game with 11 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals for the Lady Falcons (7-6 overall), who limited the Lady Lions (1-14 overall) to 25.8 percent shooting and forced 31 turnovers. The trio of White, Sikes and McCaffity combined for 12 of the Lady Falcons’ 17 steals.

 

Falcons survive 75-74 over Lincoln (Pa.) for ninth straight win

Lincoln (Pa.) University gave Saint Augustine’s College a major scare Saturday, Jan. 10, in Emery Gymnasium, but the Falcons held on for a thrilling 75-74 win for their ninth straight victory, a feat the Falcons last accomplished during the 2006-07 season.

 

Junior guard Steven Brignol (Brooklyn, N.Y.) came off the bench to score 17 points for the Falcons (10-4), who led 75-70 with four minutes left but the Tigers (2-9 overall) finished with a 4-0 run. The Falcons escaped with the victory when Darren Clark of the Tigers missed a layup with three seconds left.

 

Sophomore forward Shaun Washum (Norfolk, Va.) added 14 points, junior guard Chris Jordan (Houston, Texas) scored 13 points and junior forward Ethan McNary (Norfolk, Va.) scored 10 points for the Falcons.

 

Falcons beat four Division I schools to claim men’s title

Saint Augustine’s College captured the men’s title over four area Division I schools, including three from the ACC, in the 2009 Tar Heel Invitational Indoor Track and Field Meet Saturday, Jan. 10, at Eddie Smith Fieldhouse.

 

The Falcons scored 131 points followed by ACC schools the University of North Carolina (123 points), Duke University (108) and North Carolina State University (57). North Carolina Central University finished fifth with 31 points.

 

Dennis Boone led the Falcons with victories in the 60-meter (6.69 seconds) and 200-meter dashes (21.71 seconds). Joe Kindred won the high jump at 2.14 meters, Jason Boyd claimed the 60-meter hurdles in 8.21 seconds and Brandon Quarles won the triple jump at 15.63 meters for the Falcons.
