Sapphire Gala tickets available
Tickets are on sale now for the Annual Sapphire Scholarship Gala, which will be Saturday, January 31, at the North Raleigh Hilton. Professional Development
The NEA Foundation is accepting applications for its Learning & Leadership Grants program which provides opportunities for teachers, education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff to engage in high-quality professional development and lead their colleagues in professional growth. Grants to individuals fund participation in professional development experiences such as summer institutes and action research. Grants to groups fund collegial study, including study groups, action research, lesson study, and mentoring experiences for faculty or staff new to an assignment. The grant amount is $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups. Religion
Applications are being accepted for pastoral-leadership grants from the Louisville Institute, with support from the Lilly Endowment, for research projects that reflect on the conditions of contemporary Christian ministry and pastoral leadership. Grants of up to $40,000 each will be awarded for up to a one-year period of research and writing. Applicants must be academics and pastors who have earned a Ph.D or terminal degree in their chosen vocations. Children and Youth
Letters of Inquiry are being accepted on regarding grants from the William T. Grant Foundation for research on social environments that affect the daily lives of youths ages 8 to 25, how these settings can be improved, and the use of research evidence in public policy that affects young people. Grants average between $100,000 to $600,000 over two to three years. Financial Literacy
The FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) Investor Education Foundation invites nonprofit groups and researchers to apply for funding for projects that support its mission of providing Americans with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary for financial success. Of particular interest to the foundation in 2009 are projects that focus on using behavioral finance to improve saving and investing, meeting the financial and investor education needs of underserved audiences, opening new marketing and distribution channels for financial and investor education, and helping Americans manage their finances in retirement. The foundation has set no minimum or maximum on the number of grants to be funded or for the amounts of the individual grant awards. Bryant racks up two more basketball honors
The list of accomplishments keeps growing for
The 6-foot Lady Falcon center was named Division II national women’s basketball player of the week by Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN). She was selected by an Internet fan poll which runs each Monday through Wednesday during the basketball season.
Bryant also captured the CIAA women’s basketball rookie of the week award for the third straight week on Monday, January 12.
Bryant, a 6-foot center, is the first player to win the weekly honor three consecutive times since the 2004-05 season.
This is the fifth time in seven weeks that Bryant was named the CIAA’s top female rookie. Bryant is tied for second in scoring (17.5 ppg) and ranks seventh in rebounding (7.2 rpg) in the CIAA.

The trio of White, Sikes and McCaffity combined for 12 of the Lady Falcons’ 17 steals.

Dennis Boone led the Falcons with victories in the 60-meter (6.69 seconds) and 200-meter dashes (21.71 seconds). Joe Kindred won the high jump at 2.14 meters, Jason Boyd claimed the 60-meter hurdles in 8.21 seconds and Brandon Quarles won the triple jump at 15.63 meters for the Falcons.
