Sapphire Gala tickets available

Tickets are on sale now for the Annual Sapphire Scholarship Gala, which will be Saturday, January 31, at the North Raleigh Hilton. Writing Center open for appointments

The Saint Augustine’s College Writing Center will reopen for appointments Monday, January 26. The Writing Center’s mission is to address the concerns of students across the campus and to encourage academic discourse in a casual setting. Peer writing consultants are trained to help writers at any stage of the writing process, including prewriting, drafting, revising and editing. Consultants are also prepared to assist students with various writing genres and documentation styles. The Writing Center also offers services to faculty. These services include the option to submit an assignment sheet which would remain on file in the Writing Center or to request a brief classroom visit from the director and a consultant. William Jefferson Jackson Scholarship available – apply now
About the Scholarship: The William Jefferson Jackson Scholarship is a memorial scholarship to honor William, who graduated from Saint Augustine’s College in 1949. William’s family, with the assistance of the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Alumni Chapter distributes an annual scholarship of $2,000 to honor his legacy; his commitment to Saint Augustine's College; and his belief that alumni should give back to their alma mater in the form of money and/or time.

Who Can Apply: Full-time students, actively pursuing undergraduate studies at Saint Augustine's College, who will be classified as first-year seniors in September are eligible to apply. A minimum grade point average of 2.75 is required. The scholarship is open to students regardless of their field of study. See application for more information.

Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program

The Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (MURAP) is a paid summer fellowship designed to foster the entrance of talented students from diverse backgrounds in fields such as the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts into graduate school and faculty positions in U.S. colleges and universities. More specifically, the program seeks to increase the presence of minorities and others who demonstrate a commitment to eradicating racial disparities in graduate school and, eventually, in academic ranks. The session will be May 25 through July 30. Religion

Applications are being accepted for pastoral-leadership grants from the Louisville Institute, with support from the Lilly Endowment, for research projects that reflect on the conditions of contemporary Christian ministry and pastoral leadership. Grants of up to $40,000 each will be awarded for up to a one-year period of research and writing. Applicants must be academics and pastors who have earned a Ph.D. or terminal degree in their chosen vocations. Children and Youth

Letters of Inquiry are being accepted on regarding grants from the William T. Grant Foundation for research on social environments that affect the daily lives of youths ages 8 to 25, how these settings can be improved, and the use of research evidence in public policy that affects young people. Financial Literacy

The FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) Investor Education Foundation invites nonprofit groups and researchers to apply for funding for projects that support its mission of providing Americans with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary for financial success. Of particular interest to the foundation in 2009 are projects that focus on using behavioral finance to improve saving and investing, meeting the financial and investor education needs of underserved audiences, opening new marketing and distribution channels for financial and investor education, and helping Americans manage their finances in retirement. Saint Augustine’s College/Johnson C. Smith games moved to today

The Saint Augustine’s College/Johnson C. Smith University basketball doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday, January 20, in Charlotte, will be played today (Thursday) due to snow. The women’s game starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m. in Brayboy Gymnasium in Charlotte.

 

The men’s winner will have sole possession of first place in the Western Division. The Falcons (12-5 overall, 6-3 CIAA) are second in the division at 3-1 and the Golden Bulls (11-4, 4-4 CIAA) are currently atop the division at 2-0.

 

The Lady Falcons (9-6, 5-4 CIAA, 3-1 Western Division) need a win to keep pace with division leader Fayetteville State (2-0 Western Division) in the women’s standings. The Lady Golden Bulls (9-6, 6-2 CIAA), last season’s CIAA Tournament runner-ups, are looking for their first division victory (0-2).

 

This is the first meeting this season between both schools.

 

Bryant, Richards earn CIAA weekly basketball honors

Freshman Keyona Bryant (Springdale, Md.) and head coach Margaret Richards of Saint Augustine’s College won CIAA weekly basketball awards Monday, January 19.

 

Bryant, a 6-0 standout center, captured her fourth straight CIAA women’s rookie of the week honor. This is the sixth time this season that Bryant was voted the league’s top female freshman.

 

Bryant averaged 12 points and 7 rebounds in two games last week including 11 points to help the Lady Falcons sweep cross-town rival Shaw University for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. She averages 16.8 points a game, which is the fourth-best in the CIAA. Her 7.2 rebounds per contest are tied for sixth in the conference.

 

Richards was named CIAA women’s coach of the week after directing the Lady Falcons to two victories last week, including Saturday’s 72-64 win over Shaw, winner of five of the last six CIAA titles. The weekly award is the fourth this season for Richards, a first-year coach.

 

Falcons outscore Central State 94-84

Senior guard Will Gill (Clinton, Md.) scored 22 points and junior guard Chris Jordan (Houston, Texas) added 21 points on 5 of 8 three-point shooting for Saint Augustine’s College in a 94-84 win over Central State (Ohio) University Saturday, January 17, in the BC Powder Classic hosted by North Carolina Central University at McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium.

 

Sophomore forward Hayward Fain (Akron, Ohio) added 17 points and senior guard Marcus Butler (Mansfield, Ohio) scored 15 points for the Falcons (12-5 overall), who limited Central State to 35.5 percent first-half shooting in racing to a 44-27 halftime lead.

 

The Falcons held a 24-point lead with 6:41 remaining in the game before Central State went on a late run to make the score respectable. For the game, the Falcons shot 55.7 percent and Central State made 47.5 percent of its shots.

 

Saint Augustine's College limited Chowan University to 33.3 percent shooting in a 63-54 non-conference victory Friday, January 16, in the first game of the BC Powder Classic.

 

Boone sparks Falcons to eight victories at Maryland indoor meet

Senior sprinter Dennis Boone (Petersburg, Va.) paced Saint Augustine’s College with victories in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash Saturday, January 17, at the Terrapin Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland at PGSL Center.

 

Boone won the 60-meter dash in 6.74 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 21.83 seconds. Sophomore Josh Scott (Winter Haven, Fla.) won the 400-meter dash in 48.28 seconds, and junior Johnny Shuping (Klerksdorp, South Africa) captured the 800-meter run in 1:55.41 minutes. In the field events, senior Joe Kindred (Fuquay-Varina) won the long jump at 24-3.50 feet, and junior Brandon Quarles (Phoenix, Ariz.) won the triple jump at 49-5 feet. Kindred is the defending Div. II national champion in the high jump.

 

In the women’s events, freshman Angelique Smith (Union City, Calif.) was the winner in the 200-meter dash in 25.00 seconds, and the 4x400-meter relay team won in 3:56.76 minutes.

 

Bowling team finishes third in CIAA division tourney

The Lady Falcon bowling team finished third overall at the CIAA Western Division tournament held January 16-18 in Salisbury. The team placed second in baker matches. Antoinette Bailey (Detroit, Mich.) was the high bowler for the Lady Falcons with an average of 165.5.
