Sapphire Gala tickets available

Tickets are on sale now for the Annual Sapphire Scholarship Gala, which will be Saturday, January 31, at the North Raleigh Hilton. Faculty and staff tickets are offered at the special discount price of $75 – half off the regular ticket price. Tickets for the general public are $150. ROTC Leaders Training Course

The Army ROTC Leader’s Training Course (LTC) is four weeks of intense classroom and field training held in the summer at Fort Knox, Ky. This course is an accelerated version of the two year leadership development training Cadets receive on campus in the Basic Course. By participating in this rigorous training, you will qualify for enrollment in the Army ROTC Advanced Course – provided you have two years of college remaining (undergraduate or graduate). Once you successfully complete LTC, agree to a contract and enter the Advanced Course, you may also qualify to receive a $5,000 bonus.

 

The benefits of this leadership training will extend well beyond your college years into any career you choose. You may even qualify for a two-year scholarship that might take care of your college tuition and many other expenses.

International Studies to host film festival

The Department of International Studies has been awarded The Tournées Festival Grant to help bring contemporary French cinema to colleges and universities. The department will host a French film festival February 4 through March 4. The event is free and open to the public. All showings will be at Seby Jones Auditorium at 5:30 p.m.

Bryan Booker, Department of History, Government, and Public Policy, is putting together a college-wide calendar of events for Black History Month. Barbry named campus police chief

Capt. Jerry Barbry has been named chief of the Saint Augustine’s College Campus Police Department. Barbry served as interim chief since August 2008. Barbry has been with the College for more than five years.

 

Barbry has nearly 20 years of law enforcement experience. He started his career in 1989 as an officer with the Goldsboro Police Department. Since then he has completed extensive law enforcement training in criminal investigations, counter terrorism, cultural diversity, street gang identification and intervention.

 

During his five years at Saint Augustine’s College, Barbry has worked as crime prevention officer, safety officer and lead investigator.

 

Words of Wisdom Scholarship

Alltel invites all current and prospective students of America’s black colleges and universities to enter the Words of Wisdom essay contest by answering this question: The election of our country’s first African-American president is proof that the dream of change can become a reality. How are you called to build upon this new spirit of change?

 

Ten winners will be chosen from all essays submitted to the contest. Each winning essayist will receive a $10,000 scholarship to a participating black college or university. All 10 winners will be honored at an awards luncheon to be held Thursday, March 12, in Little Rock, Ark. Words of Wisdom spokesperson and esteemed poet and author, Dr. Maya Angelou, will personally present each winner with their scholarship. A reception will feature Musiq Soulchild.

Essays must be 750-1,000 words and must be the original work of the submitting author. Contestants have until midnight on February 14 to submit their essays. Students can pick up contest information from Doris Bullock in Hunter 204; Nadine Ford in the Financial Aid Office; or Ann Brown in Goold Hall.  

Corporate and Foundation Grant Opportunities

Religion

Applications are being accepted for pastoral-leadership grants from the Louisville Institute, with support from the Lilly Endowment, for research projects that reflect on the conditions of contemporary Christian ministry and pastoral leadership. Grants of up to $40,000 each will be awarded for up to a one-year period of research and writing. Applicants must be academics and pastors who have earned a Ph.D. or terminal degree in their chosen vocations. Children and Youth

Letters of Inquiry are being accepted regarding grants from the William T. Grant Foundation for research on social environments that affect the daily lives of youth ages 8 to 25, how these settings can be improved, and the use of research evidence in setting public policy that affects young people. Financial Literacy

The FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) Investor Education Foundation invites nonprofit groups and researchers to apply for funding for projects that support its mission of providing Americans with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary for financial success. Of particular interest to the foundation in 2009 are projects that focus on using behavioral finance to improve saving and investing, meeting the financial and investor education needs of underserved audiences, opening new marketing and distribution channels for financial and investor education, and helping Americans manage their finances in retirement. The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is encouraging educators across the United States to apply for 2009 summer study opportunities in the humanities. Each summer, the NEH supports rigorous national, residential seminars, institutes, and workshops located in the United States and abroad. CIAA honors Bryant for fifth straight week

For the fifth consecutive time, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) named freshman phenom Keyona Bryant (Springdale, Md.) the women’s basketball rookie of the week.

 

The award is the seventh overall this season for Bryant, a 6-foot center who ranks second in scoring (17.9 points per game) and field goal percentage (53.2 percent), and sixth in rebounding (7.1 rebounds per game) in the CIAA. She has won the weekly rookie award more than any other CIAA player this season.

 

Bryant leads Lady Falcons past Lincoln 76-49

Freshman center Keyona Bryant scored a game-high 26 points on 11-of-12 shooting and grabbed 7 rebounds to lead Saint Augustine’s College over Lincoln University of Pennsylvania 76-49 in women’s college basketball Saturday, January 24, at Rivero Hall in Lincoln, Pa.

 

Sophomore guard LaKiesha White (Richmond, Va.) added 13 points, 8 assists and 5 steals, senior forward Brittany Parker (Waterbury, Conn.) scored 12 points and junior guard Eliezer Iceson (Harlem, N.Y.) pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds for the Lady Falcons (10-7 overall), who shot 47 percent and limited the Lady Lions (2-16) to 27 percent shooting. Senior guard Dierra Washington had 8 points and 6 steals for the Lady Falcons. 

 

Falcons rally to defeat Lincoln 70-63

Junior guard Steven Brignol (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 19 points to help Saint Augustine’s College pull out a 70-63 come-from-behind victory over Lincoln University on Saturday, January 24, at Rivero Hall.

 

Senior guard Marcus Butler (Mansfield, Ohio) added 13 points, sophomore forward Shaun Washum (Norfolk, Va.) added 11 and sophomore forward Hayward Fain (Akron, Ohio) chipped in 10 points for the Falcons (13-6 overall), who trailed 57-51 with 7:40 remaining but ended the game with a 19-6 run. The Falcons earned the victory by making 27 of 41 free throw attempts and scoring 22 points off 20 Lincoln turnovers to overcome 39 percent shooting.

 

Falcons win six events at Eddie & Joe Smith UNC Indoor Track Classic

Saint Augustine’s College captured six events at the 2009 Eddie & Joe Smith UNC Indoor Track and Field Classic hosted by the University of North Carolina on Saturday, January 24.

 

Freshman Angelique Smith (Union City, Calif.) of the Lady Falcons won the women’s 200-meter dash in 24.55 seconds. Sophomore Ramon Gittens (St. Michael, Barbados) of the Falcons was the winner in the men’s 60-meter dash in 6.75 seconds.

 

Saint Augustine’s College swept both the men’s and women’s 4x400-meter relays. The Lady Falcons won in 3:53.75, and the Falcons won in 3:14.76.

 

Sophomore Josh Scott (Winter Haven, Fla.) finished first in the men’s 200-meter dash in 21.66. Sophomore Orlando Duffus (Kingston, Jamaica) won the men’s triple jump invitational at 14.72 meters, finishing ahead of teammate Jamal Cumberbatch (junior, St. Peters, Barbados), who jumped 14.63 meters.

 

Other second-place finishers for Saint Augustine’s College include junior Johnny Shuping (Klerksdorp, South Africa/men’s 800-meter run/1:54.34), sophomore Chayce Smith (Bermuda/men’s one-mile run/4:19.82), freshman Kelly Fisher (Eatontown, N.J./men’s long jump/6.81 meters) and freshman Chris Copeland (Suffolk, Va./men’s high jump invitational/2.08 meters).
