Blow will enter Virginia Wesleyan Athletic Hall of Fame

Head men’s basketball coach Lonnie Blow Jr. will be inducted, along with seven other charter members, into the newly established Virginia Wesleyan College Athletic Hall of Fame during a special ceremony in Norfolk, Va., on February 7, 2009.

Blow said he is elated to be a member of the 2009 inaugural Hall of Fame class at Virginia Wesleyan College.

“It is always special to go in the Hall of Fame, but to go in as a charter member makes it more special,” Blow said. “It symbolizes the best of the best.”

A first-year college head coach, Blow was one of the most prolific basketball scorers in the 40-year athletic history of Virginia Wesleyan College, located between Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Va. He holds two school records including the single-season scoring mark (625 points) and most field goals in one season, and shares the school mark for most points in one game (40 points).

The record-setting sharpshooter also ranks second in career field goals, second in career scoring average (23.1 during 1980-81 season) and third in career scoring average. Blow finished his collegiate basketball career as the school’s all-time leading scorer and is currently fifth on the career scoring list with 1,574 points.

Bryant, Fain earn CIAA honors

Keyona Bryant (Springdale, Md.) and Hayward Fain (Akron, OH) of Saint Augustine’s College earned CIAA weekly basketball honors Monday, February 2.

Fain, a 6-foot-5 sophomore forward, was named CIAA men’s basketball player of the week after averaging a double-double last week. He averaged 11.7 points and 11 rebounds in three games including 15 points and 15 rebounds in a 90-72 win over Virginia State University on Jan. 27. Fain scored 11 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in a 64-58 loss to Virginia Union University on January 31.

Bryant, a 6-foot freshman center, was voted CIAA women’s basketball rookie of the week for the sixth consecutive week and eighth time overall, the most of any CIAA player this season. She averaged 18.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and shot 63 percent from the floor in three games last week including 22 points and 10 rebounds in a 66-62 loss to Bowie State University on January 29.

The frontrunner for CIAA women’s rookie of the year, Bryant is the league’s second-leading scorer (18.0 points per game) and sixth-leading rebounder (7.3 rebounds per game). She ranks second in the CIAA in field goal percentage (55.5 percent).

Falcons win six events at Texas Roadhouse Indoor Classic

Saint Augustine’s College earned victories in six events on Saturday, January 31, at the 2009 Texas Roadhouse Carolina Classic indoor track and field meet hosted by the University of North Carolina.

Senior jumper Joe Kindred (Fuquay-Varina, NC) led the way with a victory in the men’s high jump. His leap of 6-9.75 beat Donte Hall of the University of North Carolina, who jumped 6-8. Kindred, a Division II indoor national high jump champion, also placed second in the triple jump invitational with a leap of 49-11.25.

Olympic sprinter Barbara Pierre (Winter Haven, Fla.) was victorious in the 60-meter dash in 7.59 seconds. Pierre is a two-time Division II indoor national 60-meter champion and competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. For the men, senior sprinter Dennis Boone (Petersburg, Va.) won the 60-meter dash in 6.75 seconds.

Falcons lose to Virginia Union 64-58

Sophomore forward Hayward Fain (Akron, Ohio) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds for Saint Augustine's College, but Virginia Union University extended its winning streak to 13 games with a 64-58 victory over the Falcons on Saturday, January 31, in a CIAA men’s basketball game at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

Ironically, the last time the Panthers (15-3 overall, 11-2 CIAA) lost this season was to the Falcons 77-55 in Raleigh on Dec. 4, 2008. With the win, the Panthers maintained the league's best CIAA record while the Falcons (15-7, 8-5 CIAA), who entered the game with the second-best CIAA mark, had a three-game win streak snapped. Still, the Falcons have won 14 of their last 17 games.

Senior guard Will Gill (Clinton, Md.) added 10 points and junior guards Brandon Hickson (Columbia, S.C) and Steven Brignol (Brooklyn, NY) both scored nine points for the Falcons.

Lady Falcons pull away from Virginia Union 79-60

Sophomore guard LaKiesha White (Richmond, Va.) and freshman center Keyona Bryant (Springdale, Md.) both scored 17 points, and Saint Augustine's College shot 60 percent from the floor for a 79-60 CIAA women's basketball victory over Virginia Union University on Saturday, January 31, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

The win ended a two-game losing streak for the Lady Falcons (11-9 overall, 6-7 CIAA), who shot 68 percent and limited the Lady Panthers (6-12, 3-9 CIAA) to 28 percent in the second half to overcome a 35-34 halftime deficit. Senior guard Dierra Washington (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore guard Whitney Griffis (Richmond, Va.) both added 10 points, and sophomore forward Allison Sikes (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore guard Crystal McCaffity (Havelock, NC) both contributed nine points for the Lady Falcons, who outscored the Lady Panthers 46-25 in the second half.
