Chili cook-off results

Congratulations to the winners of the first faculty/staff chili cook-off, held Friday, March 13. The winners were:

First place: Leon Scott, vice president of Business and Finance

Second place: Dianne Boardley Suber, president

Third place: Marc Newman, vice president of Institutional Advancement and Development

Most importantly, the event raised more than $800 for the Charles Edwards Transplant Fund. Edwards, the College’s mailroom supervisor, is on a waiting list for a heart transplant.

 

Spring break cafeteria hours

The cafeteria will operate on the following schedule through Sunday, March 22:

Brunch: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dinner: 3-5 p.m.

 

Community Day

Saint Augustine’s College annual Community Day will be Saturday, April 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the MLK Mall. Admissions will also host an open house for prospective students that day. Campus departments are invited to send representatives to the event. Photography exhibit in Seby Jones gallery

The Saint Augustine’s College Visual Arts department presents the exhibit Global Perspectives: Photographs by Titus Heagins, a documentary photographer from Durham. Heagins’ photographs will be displayed through March 30 in the Seby Jones Fine Arts Building gallery. Students, faculty, staff and the community are invited to the exhibit.

 

Faculty pianist hosts benefit concert

A faculty recital/benefit concert featuring faculty pianist, Sooyoung Kang, and internationally acclaimed saxophonist, Dr. Todd Rewolt, will be at 5:45 p.m., Tuesday, March 31, in the Seby Jones Auditorium. This will be a benefit concert to raise money for the Young Chamber Music Festival (YCMF) scholarship as well as the Charles Edwards transplant fund. YCMF is a new summer program founded by Ms. Kang, under the guidance of Dr. Sevealyn Smith, director of the College’s Honors Program, to promote young students' music study and to support chamber music collaboration at Saint Augustine’s College. The first music festival at the College will be June 22-27.

McDonald’s communications internship

The McDonald’s East division, located in Raleigh, is seeking a communications intern. The student must have completed his or her sophomore year and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. White House Internship Program

Applications are being accepted for the Summer White House Internship Program. Those selected will gain valuable experience and an inside look at the life of the White House staff while building leadership skills.

Falcons capture fourth-straight NCAA D-II indoor track crown

Saint Augustine’s College finished strong to win its fourth consecutive men’s national title Saturday, March 14, in the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships held at Yeoman Field House on the campus of the University of Houston.

 

The victory gave the Falcons their 31st national championship overall (men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor) under acclaimed head coach George Williams, including 12 men’s indoor titles.

 

“I’m not counting,” Williams said. “I’m just glad we are winning.”

 

The Falcons pulled away from Adams State for their latest men’s championship. Leading 67-66, the Falcons outscored Adams State 38-14 in the final five events.

 

Kindred, Pierre star at NCAA Div. II Indoor track nationals

Joe Kindred of Saint Augustine’s College had a great day at the 2009 NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championships on the campus of the University of Houston.

 

Kindred, from Fuquay-Varina, N.C., won both the men’s high jump and the men’s long jump Friday, March 13. He defended his indoor high jump crown by leaping 7-3 to beat Oliver Harsanyi of Western State, who jumped 7-0½.

 

Kindred, the 2009 Division II national indoor field athlete of the year, then jumped 24-8¼ for his first national long jump title. His nearest competitor was Gerald Bascoe of Lincoln (Mo.), who jumped 24-4½.

 

Also on Friday, Olympic sprinter Barbara Pierre (Winter Haven, Fla.) snapped her own meet record by running 7.29 seconds in the women’s 60-meter dash preliminaries. The previous mark in the Division II Indoor nationals was 7.37 set by Pierre on March 14, 2008. Pierre is the two-time defending national champion in the women’s 60-meter dash.

 

Falcons finish third in CIAA Western Division Golf Tournament

Host Saint Augustine’s College placed third in the 2009 CIAA Western Division Golf Tournament on Tuesday, March 10, at Pine Hollow Golf Course.

 

The Falcons shot a two-day total of 671 to finish behind winner Fayetteville State (605) and runner-up Virginia State (622). Aaron Oliver (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Julius Wells (Bridgeport, Conn.) led the Falcons with two-day scores of 161 and 162, respectively. Oliver finished tied for eighth individually and Wells placed 10th.
