The applications for the 2009-2010 school year are available to all students interested in campaigning for a Student Government Association office in the Office of Student Activities.  The following positions will be up for election:

An informational session will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, in the MLK Ballroom. The session will provide an opportunity for potential candidates to ask questions and for the Office of Student Activities to disseminate critical information. This session is not mandatory, but it is highly encouraged to all students that are interested in any of the aforementioned positions.

 

The deadline for submitting an application is 5 p.m. Friday, March 27.

 

“Notes at Noon” performance

The Office of Student Activities is hosting and sponsoring a performance of "Notes at Noon" by Galen Razzaq. The event is Friday, March 27, from 12-1:30 p.m. in the MLK Cafeteria. Visit www.flutejuice.com/website2/bio1.htm for more information about Galen Razzaq.

 

Pre-registration for summer, fall

Pre-registration for the summer sessions and fall semester begins Monday, March 30, and ends Friday, May 1. Students need to meet with their advisors during that time and pre-register using CAMS. Students who do not pre-register will be assessed a $100 registration fee.

  

Regalia orders

Faculty and staff are asked to visit the bookstore between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to order regalia for commencement. Pricing is as follows: BA, $35; MA, $36.20; and Ph. D., $38.20. The deadline for ordering regalia is March 30.

 

Photography exhibit in Seby Jones gallery

The Saint Augustine’s College Visual Arts department presents the exhibit Global Perspectives: Photographs by Titus Heagins, a documentary photographer from Durham. Heagins’ photographs will be displayed through March 30 in the Seby Jones Fine Arts Building gallery. Students, faculty, staff and the community are invited to the exhibit.

 

Faculty pianist hosts benefit concert

A faculty recital/benefit concert featuring faculty pianist, Sooyoung Kang, and internationally acclaimed saxophonist, Dr. Todd Rewolt, will be at 5:45 p.m., Tuesday, March 31, in the Seby Jones Auditorium. This will be a benefit concert to raise money for the Young Chamber Music Festival (YCMF) scholarship as well as the Charles Edwards transplant fund. YCMF is a new summer program founded by Ms. Kang, under the guidance of Dr. Sevealyn Smith, director of the College’s Honors Program, to promote young students' music study and to support chamber music collaboration at Saint Augustine’s College. The first music festival at the College will be June 22-27.

Community Day to include Easter egg hunt and blue and white scrimmage 

Saint Augustine’s College annual Community Day will be Saturday, April 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the front of campus. The event begins with an Easter egg hunt at 10 a.m. Faculty and staff members are asked to donate candy-filled plastic eggs for the Easter egg hunt. Drop-off eggs at Hunter Building, Room 109, by Thursday, April 2. The football team will host a blue and white scrimmage at 1:30 p.m.  Campus departments are invited to set-up information tables during Community Day. Call 516-4608 for more information. 

 

McDonald’s communications internship

The McDonald’s East division, located in Raleigh, is seeking a communications intern. The student must have completed his or her sophomore year and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Falcon Read-In

The Prezell R. Robinson Library will commemorate National Library Week April 13-18. The theme this year is “Worlds Connect at Your Library.”

 

Please join the library as they celebrate the Fourth Annual Falcon Read-In on April 15 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and the community are invited to participate in this collaborative program by sharing one of their favorite readings, i.e. published writings, newspaper articles, poems, manuscripts, etc. Each individual will be allotted 10-15 minutes to read their selection.

Swing Phi Swing 40th anniversary

Swing Phi Swing Social Fellowship Inc. will hold its 40th Anniversary Celebration and Annual National Convention in Winston-Salem on April 1-5. The event begins April 1 with a community health fair and book and educational supplies drive. The convention will also include seminars, forums and business sessions. Bryant up for national rookie of the year honors

Freshman forward Keyona Bryant is nominated for the Heritage Sports Radio Network’s National Rookie of the Year honor. Fans can vote for Bryant at www.hsrn.com until Monday, March 30.

 

Lady Falcons end season tied for fifth in CIAA bowling championships

Saint Augustine’s College finished tied for fifth place in the 2008-09 CIAA Women’s Bowling Championships Monday, which matched last season for its best finish ever.

 

The Lady Falcons and Fayetteville State University, which also tied for fifth place, were the only two Western Division teams to reach the quarterfinals of the championship round.

 

The Lady Falcons, seeded eighth entering the double-elimination championship baker bracket, advanced to Monday’s quarterfinal round after beating sixth seed Johnson C. Smith University 4-3 on Sunday.

 

The season ended Monday for the Lady Falcons after losing 4-2 to third seed Virginia State University in the quarterfinals.

 

The CIAA Championships were held March 21-23 at AMF Durham Lanes.

 

Bailey becomes first Lady Falcon to make All-CIAA bowling team

Antoinette Bailey (Senior/Detroit, Mich.) was selected to the 2009 All-CIAA women's bowling team Saturday, March 21, at AMF Durham Lanes.

 

Bailey is the first All-CIAA bowler in Saint Augustine's College history. She earned the honor by averaging a score of 164.7 during the regular season which was fifth best in the Western Division and 10th best in the CIAA.

 

Falcons place second at WSSU Golf Invitational

Saint Augustine’s College shot a two-day score of 684 to finish second Sunday, March 22, at the WSSU Golf Invitational hosted by Winston-Salem State University at Winston Lake Golf Course.

 

Aaron Oliver (Senior/Pittsburgh, Pa.) of the Falcons was third individually after shooting a two-day total of 163. He was the leader after the first day with a 78.

 

Cory Landrum-Smith (Junior/Columbus, Ohio) and Julius Wells (Senior/Bridgeport, Conn.) of the Falcons both tied for seventh after shooting 174. Derek Johnson (Freshman/Chesterfield, Va.) tied for 10th after shooting 177.

 

Winston Lake Golf Course is a par 71, 6,214-yard course.

 

Falcons, Trojans split in CIAA baseball doubleheader

Saint Augustine’s College and Virginia State University split a CIAA baseball doubleheader Saturday, March 22.

 

The Trojans won the first game 8-3 and the Falcons won the second game 18-5. The loss in the first game snapped a 10-game win streak for the Falcons (13-9 overall, 3-1 CIAA).

 

Anthione Shaw (Sophomore/Chicago, Ill.) led the Falcons in the first game with a two-run home run.

 

Wayne Lewis (Freshman/Charlotte, N.C.) smacked a two-run home run in the second game. Ryan Wood (Sophomore/Chester, Va.) pitched a complete game for the victory.

 

Shuping, relay teams lead Falcons at Shamrock Invitational

Johnny Shuping (Junior/Klerksdorp, South Africa) won the 800-meter and 1500-meter runs at the 2009 Shamrock Invitational which concluded Saturday, March 21.

 

Coastal Carolina University hosted the three-day outdoor track and field meet which is the season’s first outdoor meet for the Falcons, who won their fourth straight NCAA Division II national men’s indoor championship last weekend.

 

Shuping won the 800 in 1:53.08 and teammate Alvin Miles finished second in 1:55.63. Shuping also captured the 1500 in 3:57.82.

 

The Falcon quartet of Dennis Boone (Senior/Petersburg, Va.), Travon Lee (Senior/Norwalk, Calif.), Josh Scott (Sophomore/Winter Haven, Fla.) and Ramon Gittens (Sophomore/St. Michael, Barbados) won the 4x200 relay in 1:23.89, and the foursome of Antonio Abney (Sophomore/Willingboro, N.J.), Rashaud Johnston (Senior/St. Louis, Mo.), Scott and Lee took the 4x400 relay in 3:07.44. The 4x400 relay team won the indoor national championships last week.

 

The 4x100 relay team of Boone, Lee, Gittens and Johnston finished second in 41.26. Gittens won the 200 dash in 21.09 and Boone was second in 21.18. Tim Lovick (Sophomore/Garner, N.C.) was second in the 110 hurdles in 14.71.

 

Joe Kindred (Senior/Fuquay-Varina, N.C.), the 2009 national men’s indoor field athlete of the year, won the high jump 7-0.5 followed by teammate Christopher Copeland (Freshman/Suffolk, Va.) in 6-10.75. Brandon Quarles (Junior/Phoenix, Ariz.) won the triple jump in 48-11.

 

Andrea Powell (Freshman/Richmond, Va.) was second in the women’s high jump in 17-5.25.

 

Sixteen Falcons earn indoor track and field All-American honors

Sixteen student-athletes from Saint Augustine’s College were recognized as indoor track and field All-Americans for their performances during the 2009 NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championships held March 13-14 in Houston, Texas. The Falcons won the men’s national championship for the fourth consecutive season, giving Saint Augustine’s College 31 national titles (men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor) under Head Coach George Williams.
