Pre-registration for summer, fall

Pre-register for the summer sessions and fall semester now through Friday, May 1. Students need to meet with their advisors during that time and pre-register using CAMS. Students who do not pre-register will be assessed a $100 registration fee.

  

Falcon Read-In

The Prezell R. Robinson Library will commemorate National Library Week April 13-18. The theme this year is “Worlds Connect at Your Library.”

 

Please join the library staff as they celebrate the Fourth Annual Falcon Read-In on April 15 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and the community are invited to participate in this collaborative program by sharing one of their favorite readings, i.e. published writings, newspaper articles, poems, manuscripts, etc. Each individual will be allotted 10-15 minutes to read their selection.

Faculty and staff bake-off

The Office of Institutional Advancement and Development will host a cake or pie bake-off Friday, April 24, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the MLK Conference Room. Judging begins at noon and prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. All cakes must be made from scratch, and the recipe must be shared with the judges. The entry fee is $10. The tasting fee is $1 per slice. Order forms will be available if you would like to purchase a whole cake or pie for $15. All proceeds will benefit the Charles Edwards Transplant Fund. The Office of Residence Life and Housing will host its annual Spring Fling from 3-7 p.m. Saturday, April 18, on the Quad.

Commemorating the Bishop Tuttle Training School

The Bishop Tuttle Training School operated at Saint Augustine’s College from 1925 to 1941 to train young African-American women as church workers and social workers. Today, the original Tuttle School building still stands near the main entrance as Army ROTC headquarters.  Who built it and why? Why was it in Raleigh? Why did it close? Learn the answers to these questions and more at “A Distinct Contribution: Commemorating the Bishop Tuttle Memorial Training School.” The conference is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 25, on the Saint Augustine’s College campus. Registration is $25 per person (includes lunch). Pre-registration ends April 15. Bryant voted HSRN National Basketball Rookie of the Year

The basketball honors continue to pour in for freshman star Keyona Bryant. This week, the Heritage Sports Radio Network named Bryant the Division II National Women’s Rookie of the Year after she received the most votes in an online fan poll. The award is the latest for Bryant, a 6-foot All-CIAA center who is also the CIAA Women’s Rookie of the Year.

 

Falcons finish fifth in SCSU Bulldog Golf Classic

Saint Augustine’s College placed fifth in the 2009 SCSU Bulldog Classic at the Hillcrest Golf Course this past weekend. The Falcons shot a two-day score of 627 in the golf tournament hosted by South Carolina State University. Julius Wells (Senior/Bridgeport, Conn.) led the Falcons with a two-day total of 150 which tied him for seventh place. Wells shot a score of 73 on the second day which tied for sixth-best score of the day.

 

Aaron Oliver (Sophomore/Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished 17th with a two-day score of 157, and Derek Johnson (Freshman/Chesterfield, Va.) finished tied for 20th with a two-day score of 160.

 

The Falcons will compete in the 2009 CIAA Championships which will be held April 16-17 in Fort Lee, Va.

 

Falcons win five events at Aggie Relays

Saint Augustine’s College earned five victories at the 2009 Aggie Relays on Saturday, April 4, at Irwin Belk Track. North Carolina A&T State University hosted the outdoor track and field meet.

 

The winners for Saint Augustine’s College included Olympic sprinter Barbara Pierre (Winter Haven, Fla.) in the women’s 100, Ramon Gittens (St. Michael, Barbados) in the men’s 100, Joe Kindred (Senior/Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) in the triple jump, the men’s 4x200 relay team and the men’s 1600 sprint medley team.

 

Kindred also finished second in the long jump, Jason Boyd (Freshman/Bristol, Pa.) placed second in the 110 hurdles, and the men’s and women’s 4x100 relay teams claimed second place.

 

The men’s 4x800 relay team captured third place, and Kirsten Fields (Sophomore/Mount Vernon, N.Y.) was third in the women’s triple jump.

 

Tim Lovick (Sophomore/Garner, N.C.) and Ronnie Griffith (Freshman/Tucson, Ariz.) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the men’s 110 hurdles and Aisha George (Junior/Trinidad & Tobago) was sixth in the women’s 400 hurdles. Karym Graves (Freshman/Miami, Fla.) and Alvin Miles were fourth and sixth, respectively, in the men’s 400 hurdles.

 

Michael Williams (Junior/Murfreesboro, N.C.) was fourth in the men’s long jump, and Angelique Smith (Freshman/Union City, Calif.) was eighth in the women’s 400 dash.

 

Former Lady Falcon standout Adriane Sims-Stone, competing unattached, won the women’s high jump.

 

Falcons claim three CIAA Weekly Baseball Honors

Anthione Shaw, Brandon Stewart and Head Coach Dr. Thomas C. Wood won CIAA baseball awards Wednesday, April 1. Shaw, a sophomore shortstop from Chicago, Ill., was named CIAA offensive player of the week after batting .500 and knocking in seven runs in three games last week. Stewart, a sophomore pitcher from Atlanta, Ga., was selected as CIAA pitcher of the week after scattering six hits in seven innings of a 9-4 win over Shaw in the first game of last week’s doubleheader. Wood was named CIAA coach of the week for leading his Falcons to a 3-0 record last week. The Falcons, who lead the CIAA standings at 8-2, have won 17 of their last 19 games for a 19-10 overall record.

 

Lady Falcons sweep Lincoln (Pa.) in softball

Diamond Andrews (Junior/Detroit, Mich.) went 3-for-5 with three RBIs to lead Saint Augustine’s College to a 15-6 win over Lincoln (Pa.) University Tuesday, March 31, in the first game of a softball doubleheader. The Lady Falcons (4-10 overall) also won the second game 10-1.

 

Wood hurls two-hitter in Falcons’ win over ECSU

Ryan Wood (Sophomore/Chester, Va.) tossed a two-hitter to lift Saint Augustine’s College past Elizabeth City State University 5-1 Tuesday, March 31, at USA Baseball Complex for its seventh consecutive baseball win. The Vikings later snapped the Falcons’ win streak with a 9-7 win in the second game of the CIAA doubleheader.
