Faculty, staff members earn bragging rights in bake-off

Saint Augustine’s College’s top bakers showcased their skills for a good cause Friday. The cake and pie bake-off was a benefit for the Charles Edwards Transplant Fund. The winners were: Marjorie Newman, first and third place; Patrice Andrews, second place; and Chinita Elliott, honorable mention.

 

142nd Commencement will be held May 9

Saint Augustine’s College’s 142nd Commencement will be held Saturday, May 9, at 10:30 a.m. Commencement will take place on the campus quadrangle.

 

Faculty and staff are required to participate in Commencement and wear the appropriate academic regalia. Military officers are expected to wear the appropriate attire. The line-of-march will form at 9:30 a.m. in the foyer of the Boyer Administration Building. College marshals will be present to assist you.

 

Communications office to host faculty/staff book signing

This coming fall semester, the Office of Communications will host a book signing and literary session to highlight the accomplishments of the faculty and staff of Saint Augustine's College who have had their work published. African history ceremony

The Division of Social Sciences will host the inaugural African history ceremony Tuesday, April 28, from 11 a.m. to noon at the Seby Jones Auditorium. This is a campus-wide event with a theme on “Modern Women of Africa.”

 

Theatre and Film program to premiere Election Day documentary

On Thursday, April 30, at 7p.m. in Seby Jones Auditorium, the Theatre and Film department will host an evening of student film productions. These productions include the premiere of the documentary “12 Hours that Changed the World,” based on Saint Augustine’s College’s 12-hour Election Day marathon, which captured the college’s experience of the historic election of 2008. 

 

As day turned into night, students, faculty, and staff reacted as the voters from across the nation cast their ballots as the first African-American, Barack Obama, was elected president of the United States. This piece was filmed and edited by students in Documentary I & II classes.  There is also a series of short narrative and experimental pieces from Motion Picture I and Advanced Camera & Lighting classes. The evening of student films is free and open to the public.

 

Additionally, WAUG TV, on Time Warner Digital Cable channel 102, is currently airing three Theatre and Film student productions: “An Unexpected Egypt,” directed by alumni Ramal Johnson and Breyon Mims; “For My Dad,” a new media piece by Jessica Wright; and “Africa Stories: From Heartache to Hope,” directed by alumni Jerome Drumgoole and Michael VanRiper. All three productions are airing back-to-back every Monday and Friday nights from 6-8 p.m.

 

Virginia Tyler’s work showing in Philadelphia

Virginia Tyler, from the Saint Augustine’s College Visual and Performing Arts department is showing at the Victory for Tyler exhibition in Philadelphia, Pa., in the Icebox Project Space at the Crane Arts Building through April 29. Tyler is also showing in the North Carolina Artists juried exhibition in Raleigh through May 3.

Kindred wins high jump at 2009 Penn Relays

Joe Kindred (Sr./Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) of Saint Augustine’s College tied a personal best of 7-5 to win the College Men’s High Jump Championship Division on Saturday, April 25, at the 2009 Penn Relays held at Franklin Field.

 

The victory capped a good week at the Penn Relays for Kindred, who also finished seventh in the College Men’s Long Jump Championship Division with a jump of 24-9.75.

 

The Saint Augustine’s College team of Rashaud Johnson (Sr./St. Louis, Mo.), Antonio Abney (Soph./Willingboro, N.J.), Randy Curry (Sr./Atlanta, Ga.) and Josh Scott (Soph./Winter Haven, Fla.) placed second in the College Men’s 4x400 Championship of America relay in a personal best of 3:02.10. Florida State won the relay in 3:01.54.

 

In other results involving Saint Augustine’s College student-athletes, Brandon Quarles (Jr./Phoenix, Ariz.) placed fourth in the College Men’s Triple Jump College Division with a jump of 49-7.25, Christopher Copeland (Fr./Suffolk, Va.) placed fourth in the College Men’s High Jump College Division with a leap of 6-6.75, and the foursome of Ramon Gittens (Soph./St. Michael, Barbados), Richard Boone (Jr./Petersburg, Va.), Dennis Boone (Sr./Petersburg, Va.) and Josh Robinson (Jr./Kansas City, Kan.) finished fourth in the College Men’s 4x200 Championship of America Division in 1:22.35.

 

Olympic sprinter Barbara Pierre (Jr./Winter Haven, Fla.) placed sixth in the College Women’s 100 Dash Championship Division in 11.47 on Saturday, and she led a team including Dartania Jackson (Jr./Tampa, Fla.), Sheena Johns (Soph./Greenwood, Del.), and Angelique Smith (Fr./Union City, Calif.) to a sixth-place finish in the College Women’s 4x100 College Division in 46.00 on Friday.

 

The foursome of Pierre, Smith, Krya Mobley (Jr./Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Sharona Brown (Jr./Manchester, Jamaica) placed ninth out of 35 teams in the College Women’s Sprint Medley Championship of America Division. Their time was 3:58.06.

 

Former Saint Augustine’s College sprinter Phillippe DeRosier won the Olympic Development Men’s 100 Dash in 10.23.

 

The Falcons’ next meet is Thursday, April 30, at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier in Lynchburg, Va.
