Saint Augustine’s College Graduate and Teacher’s Likeness on New Stamp

A United States postal stamp honoring Anna Julia Cooper, a graduate of Saint Augustine’s College (then Normal School) who later taught here, will be released on June 11.  Mrs. Cooper purchased and dedicated one of the Historic Chapel’s stained glass windows in honor of her husband, George A. C. Cooper, also an alumnus.  She is known for her book, A Voice From the South, and her famous quote: "The cause of freedom is not the cause of a race or a sect, a party or a class - it is the cause of humankind, the very birthright of humanity.”  The quote is included on every U.S. passport.

Walk Your Way To Fitness (*first in a series of fitness tips)

To increase your fitness level through walking and to increase the number of calories you burn with your walks, try the following:

Use trekking poles. Walking with poles (or sticks) increases the number of calories you burn by 22%.

Arm Swings. Bending your elbows and pumping your arms burn more calories.

Walk hills. When you walk hilly areas you have to work harder on the way up, which again burns more calories.

Hit the Trails. Try a popular hiking trail instead of your usual routine. You will enjoy the change of pace and a change of terrain will change your pace.

Use the buddy system. Walking with a partner can motivate you to walk longer and more often.

Use the speedy-buddy-system. Got a friend who walks at a faster pace? Arrange to walk with them once a week. Don’t hold them back but really work on keeping up their faster pace.

Use the four-legged buddy system. Walking with your favorite pooch can get you walking faster and more often. Dogs have a way of getting really attached to their walking and can almost always be relied on to remind us when it is time to go again.

Take a “windy walk.” “It’s too windy” will no longer be on your list of excuses. Use arm swings to move you forward and be sure to wear a windbreaker.

Take short steps.  Pick up your pace by taking shorter, quicker steps.

Take the Stairs. Pick up your pace by taking the stairs. If there is a track field with bleachers, a mall with stairwells, or stairs in your house, take advantage of the opportunity walk up and down the stairs for your workout one day a week. You will be amazed at the fitness improvements you will make.
