Director of White House HBCU Initiative to speak at convocation
Saint Augustine’s College will celebrate the official opening of the academic year during its 143rd Fall Convocation at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at Emery Gymnasium. Dr. John Silvanus Wilson Jr., director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black College and Universities, will be the convocation speaker.
Bookstore taking academic regalia orders for convocation
All faculty and staff are required to wear regalia for convocaton. Faculty and staff members can place orders for regalia in the bookstore between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Orders must be placed no later than noon Thursday, Sept. 17. For more information, call 516-4037.
Office Max kick off
The Office of Business and Finance, Auxiliary Services, is hosting a kick off meeting with Office Max on Thursday, Sept. 29, in the MLK mini conference room. Office Max is the new vendor for office supplies. Catalogs will be issued to the staff along with gift bags for attendance.
The session will take the staff through the new ordering process and provide online catalog search information. The meeting will be divided into a morning and afternoon session. Staff representatives only need to attend one session. RSVP to the Office of Procurement at 516-4064 for the morning or afternoon session. Details are listed below.

Parking enforcement under way
Campus police officers have begun enforcing parking regulations. Students, faculty and staff who wish to park on campus must have a parking decal. Parking decals for the 2009-2010 school year are available in the cashier’s office. Prices remain unchanged from last year. Decals are $30 per semester for students. Annual decals for faculty and staff are $60 for general parking and $80 or $100 for reserved parking. Vehicle registration forms are available in the police department. Please visit the Campus Police office in Lynch Hall to complete the form before going to the Cashier. Campus police officials will need to see a valid driver’s license and vehicle registration before you can buy a decal.
IREM president to visit St. Aug campus
Pam Monroe, the 2009 president of the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM), will visit the Saint Augustine’s College campus Wednesday, Sept. 16. Monroe will meet with President Dianne Boardley Suber and others during her visit.
During the chapter meeting that takes place at noon at the Capital City Club in Raleigh, Kristal Armstrong, a 2009 graduate of Saint Augustine’s College, will have the honor of being the first SAC graduate to receive the Accredited Residential Manager certification. Armstrong was a business major with a minor in real estate management. Through her internship, she was able to gain employment in the industry while still attending college. Also, by taking the course, Successful Site Management, Armstrong satisfied the educational requirement for her certification.
Faculty/staff flu vaccine clinic planned
A faculty and staff flu vaccine clinic will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 21 in the Gordon Student Health Center. The vaccine is free for faculty and staff members who are enrolled in Blue Cross Blue Shield. Call 516-4168 to sign up. Please bring your insurance card the day of the flu clinic.
Join the Falcons in Charlotte
The Saint Augustine’s College Falcons will face the Bluefield College Rams at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte. Tickets for the game are $30. Stay to see the Charlotte Bobcats play the Cleveland Cavaliers at 7 p.m. One $30 ticket gets you into both games. Tickets will be available in the Saint Augustine’s College cashier’s office in the Hunter Building. Tickets will also be available online. For more information, call 516-4343.

Shuping runs to second place at Salem College Invitational
Saint Augustine’s College’s Johnny Shuping (Sr./Klerksdorp, South Africa) opened the 2009 cross country season by finishing second at the Salem College Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14. Shuping, the defending CIAA men’s individual champion, ran a time of 26:59.4. Chayce Smith (Jr./Bermuda) finished sixth individually with a time of 29:14.9.
Lady Falcons win twice on final day of CIAA Volleyball Round-Up
Saint Augustine’s College won twice Sunday, Sept. 13, to complete a successful weekend at the CIAA Volleyball Round-Up. The Lady Falcons beat Virginia State University 3-1 (28-26, 21-25, 25-15, 26-24) and Lincoln (Pa.) University 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-8) to finish with a 5-1 record at the three-day event played at Boo Williams Sportsplex.
Stephony Newkirk recorded 10 kills against Virginia State, and Shakira Carter collected 12 kills against Lincoln (Pa.). Roxanne Smith amassed 50 assists and Nicolette Campbell had 23 digs in two games, includng 15 digs against Virginia State. Keisha Parris added 11 digs against Virginia State for the Lady Falcons. The Lady Falcons improved to 6-9 overall after the weekend.
Falcons lose 20-14 to Mars Hill College
Saint Augustine’s College suffered a heartbreaking football loss to Mars Hill College on Saturday, Sept. 12. The Falcons led 14-0 in the game's first five minutes, but the Lions recovered to gain a 20-14 non-conference victory at Meares Stadium.
