What is Social Work?
Social work is the study of the formal processes and systems that have been instituted to assist those in society who are unable to cope with serious interpersonal and social problems. Study in this field is aimed at helping individuals, families, small groups and communities in such areas as child and drug abuse, juvenile delinquency and crime, hunger, financial budgeting, unemployment, health care, mental illness, disabilities, education, parenting, and family problems. Social workers practice in a variety of settings including hospitals, schools, mental health clinics, psychiatric hospitals, and public agencies. The main areas of specialization are health care and mental health, school, family services, child welfare, drug abuse and gerontology (clinical and occupational).
