J. Peder Zane joined the faculty of Saint Augustine's University as an Assistant Professor of Mass Communication and Journalism in 2010.

For 13 years he served as the Book Review Editor and Books Columnist for the News & Observer. His writing has won numerous national honors, including the "Distinguished Writing Award" for Commentary from the American Society of Newspaper Editors. He also edited the N&O's award-winning special section on the 1898 race riots in Wilmington and the white supremacy campaign that spread Jim Crow laws across the state.

Before joining the N&O, Peder worked at the New York Times. Peder contributed and edited two books published by W.W. Norton: "Remarkable Reads: 34 Writers and Their Adventures in Reading" and "The Top Ten: Writers Pick Their Favorite Books." His new book, written with Professor Adrian Bejan of Duke University, is titled "Design in Nature." It was published by Doubleday Publishing Company in January.

Peder grew up in New York City. He majored in American history and minored in religion while earning his B.A. from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. Zane earned his M.S. from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism.

Peder and his wife Janine live in Raleigh with their three daughters.
