Thurman Hollins was born in Conway, South Carolina and is a graduate of Marion High School in Marion, SC. He completed his Bachelors of Music Education degree at Norfolk State University and Masters in Music Education at Winthrop University. He recently began further studies at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. His music teaching experience includes holding positions as Director of Bands at Highland Springs High School (Richmond, Virginia), Wilson Middle School (Charlotte, North Carolina), Johnson C. Smith University (Charlotte, NC), and Charles Drew Charter Elementary School (Atlanta,GA)
Mr. Hollins has received numerous awards and achievements including First Year Teacher of the Year (Henrico County, VA), 1st Place Band at the National High School High-stepping Championship, Superior Ratings at Regional and National Concert and Jazz band Festivals, and a Resolution from the State of Virginia Board of Education. He has been featured in Profiles in Pride Magazine, the Richmond Free Press, Virginia Pilot, and the Charlotte Observer.
Mr. Hollins is a member of the National Education Association, Virginia Education Association, North Carolina Education Association, Music Educators National Conference, the Intercollegiate Music Association, and the HBCU National Band Director’s Consortium. He is also a member of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Golden Key Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, and Spartan Alpha Tau Honor Society. He has served as guest clinician and adjudicator for many organizations on the east coast. He is currently the Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at Saint Augustine’s University. He is married to Clytha Hollins and they have 2 children Dorian and Jayden.
