Four Falcons Earn All-CIAA Academic Honors
Saint Augustine's College placed four student-athletes on the 2009 CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic Team, which was released Monday, June 15. The Falcons tied Bowie State University and Johnson C. Smith University for the most honorees on the first and second teams.
Three Falcons made the first team, including former baseball player and 2009 graduate Clyde Fuller (Pleasant Grove, N.C.), track and field runner Sheena Johns (Rising Junior./Greenwood, Del.), and women’s basketball player Allison Sikes (Rising Junior./Richmond, Va.). Track and field sprinter Ramon Gittens (Rising Junior./St. Michael, Barbados) was a second-team selection.
“Like I’ve said before, it’s academics first, athletics second and a controlled social life third for student-athletes at Saint Augustine’s College,” Athletic Director George Williams said. “Student-athletes come to Saint Augustine’s College to graduate.”
Fuller majored in Computer Information Systems and maintained a 3.88 grade point average. A 2009 All-CIAA second-team pick as a utility player, Fuller had the highest GPA on the baseball team.
Johns is also a Computer Information Systems major with a 3.61 grade point average. A 2009 Division II All-American, Johns was part of a 4x100 relay team which finished second nationally in the 2009 Division II outdoor championships. She also was a member of the 4x400 team which finished fifth nationally at the 2009 Division II indoor and outdoor championships and won the 2009 CIAA indoor and outdoor crowns.
Sikes is a psychology major with a 3.70 grade point average. A 2009 All-CIAA selection, Sikes ranked third in rebounding (8.0 rpg) and field goal percentage (52 percent) in the CIAA. She was the team’s second leading scorer (10.6 ppg) and led the Lady Falcons in steals (63). Sikes is also a 2009 All-CIAA Tournament and 2009 All-CIAA Preseason pick and was the 2008 CIAA women’s basketball rookie of the year.
Gittens is an accounting major with a 3.52 grade point average. A 2009 Division II All-American, Gittens placed second in the 100 dash (10.18 seconds) and fourth in the 200 dash (20.84) at the 2009 Division II outdoor nationals. He also placed third in the 60 dash (6.73) at the 2009 Division II indoor nationals. Gittens was the 100 dash champion at the 2009 CIAA outdoor championships and finished second in the 60 dash at the 2009 CIAA indoor championships.
Gittens won the school’s Wiley M. Davis award for top international student-athlete, and he also won the coaches’ award in men’s indoor track and field in 2009.
To be eligible for the CIAA All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have completed one full academic year at a CIAA institution, earned a minimum 3.20 overall grade point average and have excelled as a starter or significant reserve in a CIAA sanctioned sport.
Ten CIAA student-athletes were named to the first team and 10 were selected to the second team. The overall GPA was 3.8 for the first team and 3.6 for the second team.

OAKLAND A'S DRAFT SAINT AUG'S SHAW IN 45TH ROUND
Oakland A’s Draft Saint Aug’s Shaw In 45th Round
The Oakland Athletics selected junior shortstop Anthione Shaw ( Chicago, Ill) of Saint Augustine's College in the 45th round of the 2009 First-Year Baseball Player Draft on Thursday (June 11). Shaw, the 2009 CIAA baseball player of the year, was the 1,353 player chosen. The selection surprised Shaw, who worked out for the Athletics a week ago.
“I am definitely shocked about it,” said Shaw, who led the CIAA and ranked third nationally in NCAA Division II with a .479 batting average. “It still hasn’t hit me yet. I have been working so hard to get to this point.”
This is by far the biggest highlight in a season full of achievements for Shaw, who established himself as a budding star in his first season with the Falcons after transferring from Arizona Western College. He was a major reason why the Falcons won their first CIAA regular-season title since 2005 and produced their first winning season (26-13) since 2000. The 26 wins were the most since 1990 for the Falcons, who were CIAA tournament runner-ups for the second straight season.
A versatile player, Shaw also ranked second nationally in runs per game (1.47) and third nationally in on-base percentage (.569).
For his accomplishments on the field, Shaw not only was named the CIAA’s best player, but he made the 2009 All-CIAA first team. He also was selected to the 2009 Daktronics All-Atlantic Region second team, and was an honorable mention selection on the 2009 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II All-Region team.
Baseball Head Coach Dr. Thomas Wood of the Falcons says Shaw was better than even he imagined.
“He has so much potential,” said Wood, the 2009 CIAA baseball coach of the year in his second season as Falcons’ coach. “He has tremendous range at shortstop, tremendous bat speed and a good strong arm. He knows the game and is a smart ballplayer.”
Shaw will use the next few days to decide if he will remain a Falcon on sign with the Athletics. Coach Wood says Shaw could go even higher in the 2010 draft if he played next season at Saint Augustine's College.
“With another good year and the skills that he has, the possibility of moving up another 15 to 20 rounds is very good,” Wood said. “I think that is very important for Anthione.”
Added Wood: “We are very proud with what he has accomplished. With the facilities where we play at the USA Baseball Complex and now Shaw being drafted by a major league baseball team, other players will see that and may become interested in playing at Saint Augustine's College.”
