PETERSBURG, VA - It's another CIAA title sweep for the Saint Augustine's College track and field team. The Falcons successfully defended their men's and women's outdoor crowns at Virginia State on Saturday (April 19). The Falcon men won convincingly while the Falcon women topped Virginia State. The sweep was the second straight and the 10th in 11 seasons for the Falcons, who also swept the 2008 CIAA men's and women's indoor crowns.

RALEIGH, NC – Saint Augustine’s College’s Blue-White spring football game is scheduled for Saturday (April 12) on the campus baseball field at 1:30 pm.

The intrasquad game is the culmination of spring football practice which started March 18. The Falcons open their 2008 football season at Catawba on August 30.

Falcons Dominate CIAA Weekly Baseball Honors

HAMPTON, VA – Centerfielder Joseph Pierce (Montgomery, AL) of Saint Augustine’s College was named CIAA baseball player of the week, and pitcher Daniel Moore (Rockwell, MD), second baseman Kevin Johnson (Seattle, WA) and Head Coach Thomas Wood of the Falcons also won weekly league awards on Wednesday (April 2).

Moore was selected CIAA pitcher of the week, and Johnson was chosen CIAA defensive player of the week. Wood was named CIAA coach of the week.

The four were honored after leading the Falcons to three wins in four games over Virginia State last week. Pierce went 6-for-13 for a .462 batting average, two triples and three RBIs in four games, and he also had four stolen bases and seven putouts in centerfield. Moore hurled a four-hit shutout and recorded 10 strikeouts in a 1-0 win over Virginia State on March 29, and Johnson had eight putouts and six assists in four games.

Wood, the first-year Falcon coach, has led the Falcons to
14 wins this season which more than doubles last year’s
win total (6).

Falcons Take Two From Lincoln

Saint Augustine’s College rolled over Lincoln (Pa.) 14-4 and 10-0 in a non-conference baseball doubleheader Sunday (March 9) at USA Baseball Complex.

The victories pushed the Falcons to 6-5 overall, which already matches last year’s win total. The Falcons got timely hitting and took advantage of Lincoln miscues to sweep both games.

The Falcons collected 17 hits in two games, and the Lions (0-11) committed 12 errors.

ESPN Classic To Show Falcon Quarterfinal Game

The CIAA Tournament quarterfinal game scheduled for Thursday (Feb. 28) between the Saint Augustine’s College and Johnson C. Smith University men’s basketball teams at Charlotte Bobcats Arena will be televised on ESPN Classic cable channel. The contest will be on tape delay at 9 p.m., two hours after tip-off.

FAYETTEVILLE STATE OUSTS LADY FALCONS FROM CIAA TOURNAMENT

Senior guard Kelley Bural (Franklinton, NC) led four double-figure scorers with15 points for Saint Augustine’s College, but Fayetteville State erased an early 17-point deficit and pulled away 86-76 in a CIAA Tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday (Feb. 26) at Charlotte Bobcats Arena.

Falcons Hold Off Morris College on Senior Night

RALEIGH, NC – Morris College almost spoiled Senior Night, but the Saint Augustine’s College men’s basketball team prevailed 74-69 at Emery Gymnasium on Thursday (Feb. 21) to end the regular season.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Falcons (16-9), who had lost six of their last seven games. Morris dropped to 4-20 overall but scared the Falcons with their three-point shooting (12-of-24 for 50 percent).



Gill Named to All-CIAA Men’s Basketball Team

HAMPTON, Va. – Junior Will Gill (Clinton, MD) was selected to the 2008 12-man All-CIAA men’s basketball team on Wednesday (Feb. 20).

Gill, a 6-0 guard, leads the Falcons in scoring with an average of 13.7 points a game, which ranks eighth in the CIAA. He leads the team in steals with a 1.3 steals average, which ranks 14th in the CIAA.

Coker Tops Falcons In Baseball 14-9

HARTSVILLE, SC – Junior Daniel Moore (Rockwell, MD) was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for Saint Augustine’s College, but the Falcons dropped a 14-9 baseball decision to Coker College at Tom J. New Field on Tuesday (Feb. 19).

The Falcons fell to 1-4 on the season, while Coker College improved to 6-6.

Fain, Sikes Sweep CIAA Basketball Rookie of the Year Awards
Sikes Heads Three Lady Falcons On All-Rookie Team

HAMPTON, Va. – Freshmen Hayward Fain (Akron, Ohio) and Allison Sikes (Richmond, Va.) were named CIAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Rookies of the Year by the CIAA Sports Information Directors on Tuesday (Feb. 19).

Fain, a 6-4 forward, was named CIAA men’s rookie of the week five times this season, the most of any player. He is the Falcons’ fourth-leading scorer at 10.3 points per game and grabs 6.2 rebounds a game which ranks third on the team and 14th in the CIAA. Fain averages 2.61 offensive rebounds and 1.22 steals a game which ranks 7th and 15th respectively in the CIAA.

Fain, Sikes Win CIAA Weekly Rookie Honors For Fifth Time

Freshmen Hayward Fain (Akron, OH) and Allison Sikes (Richmond, Va.) of Saint Augustine’s College are the CIAA’s top rookie basketball players for the week ending Feb. 17.

Both players have won the league’s weekly rookie award five times apiece, the most of any male and female player this season.

Fain, a 6-4 forward, averaged 8 points and 4.7 rebounds in three games last week. He scored 14 points in a 79-64 loss to Elizabeth City State on Feb. 14. Sikes, a 5-11 guard-forward, averaged 15.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.7 steals in three games last week. In addition to scoring 20 points in a 79-72 loss to Fayetteville State on Feb. 16,

Sikes had 12 points and 11 rebounds in a 66-39 loss to Johnson C. Smith on Feb. 12 and 15 points and 12 rebounds in a 65-57 victory over Elizabeth City State on Feb. 14.

Shuler’s Layup Lifts Falcons Over Johnson C. Smith in OT

Junior forward Robert Shuler (Newport News, Va.) scored on a follow shot before the buzzer sounded, and Saint Augustine’s College outlasted Johnson C. Smith 67-65 in overtime in a CIAA Western Division basketball thriller at Brayboy Gymnasium on Tuesday (Feb. 12).

Shuler grabbed Hayward Fain’s off-balanced 3-point attempt off the backboard and scored on a lay-up in one motion to give the Falcons the victory. His follow shot capped an 8-2 run for the Falcons, who trailed 63-59 with 3:06 left in overtime.

White Named CIAA Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week

Freshman LaKeisha White (Richmond, Va.) of Saint Augustine’s College was chosen CIAA women’s basketball rookie of the week on Monday (Feb. 11).

White, a 5-9 guard, averaged 13 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3 steals to help the Lady Falcons go 2-1 last week. She scored 14 points and collected 12 rebounds in a big win over Fayetteville State (75-65) on Saturday (Feb. 9). Fayetteville State was ranked 10th regionally entering the game.

Falcons Sweep 2008 CIAA Indoor Track and Field Titles

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The 2008 CIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships turned out to be another coronation for Saint Augustine’s College.

The Falcons won both the CIAA men’s and women’s titles in convincing fashion Sunday (Feb. 10) at Christopher Newport University’s Freeman Center. The indoor championships were the 37th overall for the Falcons (23 – Men, 14 – Women), who are the defending 2007 NCAA Division II Men and Women Indoor Champions.

Fayetteville State Nips Falcons 67-63

RALEIGH, NC – Phillippe Harris made a free throw with six seconds left, and Fayetteville State surprised Saint Augustine’s College 67-63 in a CIAA Western Division game at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday (Feb. 9).

The Falcons (14-6, 10-4 CIAA) entered the game ranked eighth in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Region. But the Broncos (10-12, 6-8 CIAA) surprised the Falcons, who lost their third straight game and their first to a Western Division opponent. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Broncos.

Lady Falcons Run Past Fayetteville State 75-65

RALEIGH, NC - Saint Augustine’s College had no problem with Fayetteville State’s pressure defense in a 75-65 CIAA basketball victory on Senior Night at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday (Feb. 9).

The win moved the Lady Falcons (16-7, 11-3 CIAA) into a first-place tie with Shaw and Johnson C. Smith for the CIAA lead with two weeks left in the regular season. The loss was the second in three games for the Lady Broncos (14-9, 10-4 CIAA), ranked 10th in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Region.

Bowie State Clips Lady Falcons 77-56

BOWIE, MD – Freshman guards LaKeisha White (Richmond, VA) and Whitney Griffis scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, for Saint Augustine’s College but Bowie State routed the Lady Falcons 77-56 in a CIAA basketball game at A.C. Jordan Arena on Thursday (Feb. 7).

The Lady Falcons (15-7, 10-3 CIAA) stayed close briefly but the Lady Bulldogs (15-4, CIAA 10-4) ended the first half on a 10-0 run in the last four minutes to open a 38-23 halftime lead. The Lady Bulldogs were never challenged in the second half.

Bowie State Outlasts Falcons 87-82

BOWIE, MD - Senior forward Justin Dickens (Conyers, GA) paced Saint Augustine’s College with 23 points, but Bowie State eked out an 87-82 CIAA basketball victory at A.C. Jordan Arena on Thursday (Feb. 7).

The Falcons were ranked eighth regionally and the Bulldogs were ranked ninth regionally entering the contest between two of the CIAA’s top teams.

Lady Falcons Survive Late Chowan Rally

Freshman forward Chanel Kinard (Richmond, VA) scored 15 points and Saint Augustine’s College held off Chowan 56-53 in a non-conference basketball game at the Helms Center on Monday (Feb. 4).

Freshman guard Whitney Griffis (Richmond, VA) added 10 points, and freshman guard LaKeisha White (Richmond, VA) and senior guard Kelley Bural both scored 9 points for the Lady Falcons, who won their third straight to improve to 15-6 overall.

Sikes Wins Fourth CIAA Weekly Rookie Honor

Freshman forward Allison Sikes (Richmond, VA) of Saint Augustine’s College was named CIAA women’s basketball rookie of the week for the fourth time this season on Monday (Feb. 4). Sikes leads all rookies with the most CIAA weekly rookie awards this season.

Sikes averaged 10 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4 steals in two victories last week, including 11 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals in a 63-46 win over Virginia Union on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Virginia Union Hands Falcons First Home Loss

RALEIGH, NC – Forward Brad Byerson scored a game-high 27 points and guard Braxton Byerson added 24 points as Virginia Union defeated Saint Augustine's College 90-76 in a highly-anticipated CIAA basketball contest on Saturday (Feb. 2).

LaKeith Blanks added 13 points for the Panthers, who made 7-of-11 3-pointers. Junior guard Will Gill (Clinton, MD) paced the Falcons with 19 points including 5-of-10 shooting behind the 3-point line. Senior forward Justin Dickens (Conyers, GA) and Fain added 16 points apiece, and senior center Jeff Sullivan (Carrollton, AL) added 10 points off the bench for the Falcons, who shot 43.7 percent.

Lady Falcons Trounce Virginia State 63-46

RALEIGH, NC – Freshman guard LaKeisha White (Richmond, VA) led four double figure scorers with 15 points and Saint Augustine’s College put away Virginia State 63-46 in a CIAA basketball game at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday (Feb. 2).

Freshman guard Crystal McCaffity (Havelock, NC) scored a career-high 14 points off the bench, and freshman forward Allison Sikes (Richmond, VA) and freshman guard Whitney Griffis (Richmond, VA) added 11 points for the Lady Falcons (14-6, 10-2 CIAA), tied with Shaw for the best record in CIAA play.

Coleman, Quarles Win at Texas Roadhouse Carolina Indoor Meet

CHAPEL HILL, NC –Sophomore Elzie Coleman (Newburgh, NY) won the men’s 400 meter dash and junior Brandon Quarles (Phoenix, AZ) won the men’s long jump for Saint Augustine’s College at the 2008 Texas Roadhouse Carolina Classic on Saturday (Feb. 2). UNC-Chapel Hill hosted the indoor track and field meet.

Coleman won the 400 dash in 49.31 seconds, beating Chris Courson of UNC Wilmington, who finished second in 49.37. Quarles leaped 22 feet, 7.25 inches to finish first in the long jump.

Falcons Ranked Eighth In South Atlantic Regional Poll

Saint Augustine’s College is eighth in the first NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional Men’s Basketball Rankings of the season, released Wednesday (Jan. 30).

The Falcons (14-3 overall) are off to their best start since the 2005-06 season. They host Virginia Union (14-4), ranked 3rd regionally, in an important CIAA matchup at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 2. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Lady Falcons Smother Virginia State In Second Hal

PETERSBURG, VA – Freshman forward LaKeisha White (Richmond, VA) scored 13 points, and Saint Augustine’s College held Virginia State to 18.2 percent shooting in the second half to rally for a 62-56 victory in a CIAA basketball clash at Daniel Gym on Tuesday (Jan. 29).

Fain Named CIAA Rookie of the Week for Fourth Time

Freshman Hayward Fain (Akron, OH) of Saint Augustine’s College was selected CIAA men’s basketball rookie of the week for the fourth time on Monday (Jan. 28).

Fain, a 6-4 forward, averaged 10 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2 steals in two Falcon victories last week. He made two free throws with 17 seconds left to beat Johnson C. Smith 69-68 on Jan. 22. The win gave the Falcons sole possession of first place in the CIAA Western Division.

Kindred Sets Records at Penn State Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – Junior Joe Kindred (Fuquay-Varina, NC) of Saint Augustine’s College leaped 7-5 to set facility and meet records at the Penn State National Invitational at Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track on Saturday (Jan. 26).

Kindred, the 2005 Junior National high jump champion, broke the facility mark (7-4.25) and the meet record (7-3) at the event. He also finished second in the long jump (24-2.50).

UDC topples Lady Falcons In “Think Pink” Game

SUMTER, SC – Junior guard Will Gill (Clinton, MD) pRALEIGH, NC – Freshman guard Whitney Griffis (Richmond, VA) led the way with 19 points and 8 rebounds, but Saint Augustine’s College succumbed to the three-point shooting of the University of the District of Columbia in a 67-59 loss on Cancer Breast Awareness Day at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday (Jan. 26). The non-conference contest was designated as the “Think Pink” Game in an effort to increase breast cancer awareness.

Gill Leads Falcons Past Morris College 77-64

SUMTER, SC – Junior guard Will Gill (Clinton, MD) pumped in 22 points and Saint Augustine’s College beat host Morris College 77-64 in a non-conference basketball game on Saturday (Jan. 26).

Gill was 8 of 10 from the floor including 5 of 5 from behind the 3-point arc. He made his only free throw attempt for the Falcons (13-3), matching their best start since the 2005-06 season.

Falcons Nip Golden Bulls on Fain’s Free Throws

RALEIGH, NC – Freshman forward Hayward Fain (Akron, OH) hit two free throws with 17 seconds left and Saint Augustine’s College edged Johnson C. Smith 69-68 for first place in the CIAA Western Division at Emery Gymnasium on Tuesday (Jan. 22).

The outcome wasn’t decided, however, until Ronald Thornhill of the Golden Bulls missed a wide open three-point shot at the buzzer, giving the Falcons (12-3, 9-1 CIAA, 4-0 Western Division) the victory.

The Lady Falcons (12-5, 8-2 CIAA, 2-2 Western Division) trailed 14-8 at halftime after making 3 of 27 shots for 11.1 percent. The 8 points were a season-low in the first half for the Lady Falcons. The Lady Golden Bulls made 6 of 29 shots for 20.7 percent.

Sikes Wins CIAA Weekly Rookie Honor for Third Time

HAMPTON, VA – Freshman Allison Sikes (Richmond, VA) was named CIAA women’s basketball rookie of the week on Monday (Jan. 21) for the third time this season.

Sikes, a 5-11 forward, averaged 14.5 points and 10 rebounds in two games last week. She led the Lady Falcons with 19 points and 15 rebounds in a 58-55 win over Virginia Union on Jan. 15, her fifth double-double of the season. She had 10 points and 5 rebounds in a 73-59 loss to crosstown rival Shaw at Broughton High School on Jan. 19.

The score was tied 42-42 with 4:16 remaining in the game before the Lady Falcons (9-4 overall, 5-1 CIAA) went on their late run. During the spurt, the Lady Falcons scored 10 straight points capped by Griffis’ free throw with 1:27 remaining for a 52-42 lead, which tied the Lady Falcons’ biggest lead in the game.

Dickens Shoots No. 25 Falcons To Third Straight Victory

RALEIGH, NC – Senior forward Justin Dickens (Conyers, GA) scored a career-high 26 points on 11-of-11 shooting from the floor and Saint Augustine’s College rallied past Saint Paul’s 79-76 at Emery Gymnasium on Tuesday, Jan. 8 to remain unbeaten in the CIAA.

The win was the third straight for the Falcons (9-2 overall), who are the only undefeated team in the CIAA at 6-0. The Falcons are ranked 25th nationally in the latest NABC Division II men’s basketball poll.

Falcons Fall To Clayton State 60-57

MORROW, GA – Hayward Fain (Akron, OH) scored 13 points and Jeff Sullivan (Carrollton, AL) added 12 points, but Saint Augustine’s College’s rally fell short in a 60-57 loss to host Clayton State University in the first day of the Heritage Bank Holiday Classic on Friday, Dec. 28 at the Athletics and Fitness Center.

The loss dropped the Falcons to 6-2 overall while the Lakers upped their record to 5-4. This was the first meeting between both teams.

Sullivan Gets Double-Double In Falcons’ Win

MORROW, GA - Jeff Sullivan (Carrollton, AL) scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Saint Augustine’s College made 8 3-pointers to trounce Georgia Southwestern 76-56 in the second day of the Heritage Bank Holiday Classic on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Falcons, who improved to 7-2 on the season. The Hurricanes, who dressed nine players, fell to 4-5 overall.

Saint Augustine’s College climbed two spots to No. 23 this week in the NABC/Division II Coaches national men’s basketball poll.

Fain Wins CIAA Rookie of the Week Award

HAMPTON, VA – Hayward Fain (Akron, OH) of Saint Augustine’s College was selected CIAA Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week on Tuesday, Jan. 1. Fain won the award for the second time this season.

Fain, a 6-4 freshman forward, averaged 9.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals in two games at the Heritage Bank Holiday Classic in Morrow, Ga., on Dec. 28-29, 2007. He led the Falcons with 13 points in a 60-57 loss to Clayton State on Dec. 28.

Free Throw Woes Hurt Lady Falcons in Loss

Freshman forward Chanel Kinard (Richmond, VA) scored 17 points, but Saint Augustine’s College struggled from the free throw line in a 77-70 loss to Nova Southeastern (FL) University at Emery Gymnasium on Monday, Dec. 17, which snapped a five-game college basketball win streak for the Lady Falcons.

 

Catawba Pins First Loss on Falcons

Senior center Jeff Sullivan (Carrollton, AL) had 16 points and 12 rebounds and freshman forward Hayward Fain (Akron, OH) added 16 points and 11 rebounds, but Catawba handed Saint Augustine’s College its season’s first men’s basketball loss 72-69 at Goodman Gymnasium on Saturday, Dec. 15.

The college women’s basketball game between Saint Augustine’s College and Saint Andrews Presbyterian College has been moved one day to Saturday, Dec. 15. The non-conference contest, set for Laurinburg, NC, starts at 2 p.m.

 

Sikes, Collins Win CIAA Weekly Awards

The CIAA honored basketball freshman Allison Sikes (Richmond, VA) and head coach LaTanya Collins of Saint Augustine's College on Monday, Dec. 10 after they sparked the Lady Falcons to a 2-0 record last week.

Sikes, a 5-11 guard, was named CIAA women’s basketball rookie of the week, and Collins was chosen CIAA women’s basketball coach of the week. This is the first CIAA weekly award for both Sikes and Collins.

The honors are fitting since both are instrumental in the Lady Falcons’ fast start in the 2007-08 season. Picked last in the Western Division, the Lady Falcons are 5-2 overall and are on a four-game winning streak. The victories during the streak have come against CIAA teams.
