Saint Augustine’s College moved up to sixth in the Atlantic Region rankings, which was released Wednesday (Feb. 3) by the NCAA Division II men’s basketball committee.

The Falcons, ranked eighth last week, rose two spots after knocking off CIAA Western Division rivals Johnson C. Smith University (85-78) last Thursday and Shaw University (67-48) Monday. They currently have the best league record (10-2) and overall record (16-3) in the CIAA. The top eight teams in the final regional ranking will advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament, which starts March 13 at regional sites.

RALEIGH, N.C. – Guard Chris Jordan (Sr./Houston, Texas) led four double-figure scorers with 19 points and Saint Augustine’s College stayed atop the CIAA standings with a 74-50 basketball win over Chowan University in a battle for first place Thursday (Feb. 4) at Emery Gymnasium.

The Falcons (17-3 overall, 11-2 CIAA, 3-0 Western Division) entered the game atop the CIAA standings with Chowan (13-6 overall, 9-4 CIAA, 2-1), who was tied for second place percentage-wise. Both teams also were co-leaders in the Western Division.

RALEIGH, N.C. – Forward Keyona Bryant (So./Springdale, Md.) scored 19 of her 23 points in the second half to lift Saint Augustine’s College to a 66-51 CIAA women’s basketball win over Chowan University on Thursday (Feb. 4) at Emery Gymnasium. Bryant, who averages a team-high 16.8 points, came alive after scoring four points in the first half. With the score deadlocked at 32-32 early in the second half, Bryant converted a three-point play which ignited a 27-4 Lady Falcon run. She scored 15 points during the key spurt.

ETTRICK, Va. – Allison Sikes (Jr./Richmond, Va.) made two key plays late to give Saint Augustine’s College a 61-58 CIAA women’s’ basketball victory over 18th-ranked Virginia State University on Monday (Jan. 11) at Daniel Gymnasium. Sikes scored on a follow-up layup to give the Lady Falcons (7-6 overall, 4-3 CIAA) a 60-58 lead with 23.1 seconds left. Then Sikes came up with a crucial steal which led to a Jolisa Williams (So./Charles City, Va.) free throw with 6.4 seconds left for the final margin. A desperation three-pointer by the Lady Trojans (10-3 overall, 8-2 CIAA) was way off the mark.
