Junior center Jeff Sullivan (Carrolton, AL), scored on a follow shot before the horn sounded to give visiting Saint Augustine's College a dramatic 71-70 win over Saint Paul's College on Tuesday, January 9, 2007, at Taylor-Whitehead Gymnasium. The victory was the fifth straight for the Falcons (8-4, 4-2 CIAA), who are 8-1 when they score 70 or more points.
Sullivan scored the game-winning bucket after Hassan Robinson's floater gave the Tigers (4-6, 1-3 CIAA) a 70-69 lead with 15.2 seconds left. Senior guard Antonio Fitzgerald (Danville, VA), and sophomore forward Robert Shuler (Newport News, VA), both missed jumpers on the Falcons' last possession before Sullivan scored on a bank shot off his own rebound.
The game-winning score capped a late surge for the Falcons, trailing by nine points in the closing minutes. Nicholas King's (Philadelphia, PA) three-point play with 29.2 seconds put the Falcons ahead 69-68.
King, a 6-7 senior forward-guard, led the Falcons with 21 points and eight rebounds and Fitzgerald added 16 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Sullivan scored 12 and senior guard Barry Jones (Seattle, WA) added 11 points.
Hassan Robinson led the Tigers with 25 points followed by Antonio Hargrove with 15 and Jack Browne with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The contest marked the return of senior forward-guard Claude Neeley, who missed the last four games with a foot injury. Neeley scored three points and grabbed three rebounds off the bench.
This marks the second straight year the Falcons won at Saint Paul's on a last-second basket. Last season, Fitzgerald scored on a 35-foot jumper to give the Falcons an 84-81 win on January 5, 2006.
The Falcons travel to Livingstone on Thursday, January 11, 2007, for a 7:30 p.m. basketball contest.
