The high-octane offense of Saint Augustine’s College was in full throttle Saturday as the Falcons trounced North Carolina Central 92-71 Saturday behind the scoring of Antonio Fitzgerald, Nicholas King and Claude “Chip” Neeley.
The trio combined for 68 points in the runaway victory over CIAA rival North Carolina Central at Broughton High School. Neeley and King both scored 24 points and Fitzgerald added 20 points to pace the Falcons in the Western Division game. Derrick Green added 11 points as the Falcons, the CIAA scoring leaders, scored 90 or more points for the sixth time in 11 games. A packed house of 1,999 fans watched the Falcons win at Broughton’s Holliday Gymnasium for the first time in five tries under Coach Thomas Hargrove Jr. They started pulling away midway in the first half, opening a 34-18 lead on Neeley’s layup on Deon Dixon’s assist.
But the Eagles didn’t quit, pulling within 46-41 on Drew Johnson’s three-pointer early in the second half before the Falcons broke the game open. Neeley’s layup at the 7:40 mark increased the lead to 73-53 and Falcons were on their way to another CIAA victory.
The Falcons shot a sizzling 54 percent including 53.8 percent behind the three-point arc. They stepped up defensively as well, holding Central to 38 percent shooting. The Eagles also committed 20 turnovers and were outrebounded 42-32.
Despite the loss, the Eagles had four double-figure scorers led by freshman Charles Futrell’s 14 points. Kerry Atkinson added 13 points and Julius McClellan and Chris Prince each added 12 points.
For the Falcons, Neeley grabbed 12 rebounds and King pulled down 9 rebounds. Terry Sumter collected 8 rebounds. Neeley also led the Falcons with 4 steals and Green added 3 steals while Fitzgerald dished out 9 assists.
After their success at Broughton, the Falcons return to campus Tuesday for a home game against Elizabeth City State Jan. 17 at Emery Gymnasium. Game time is 7:30 p.m. |
