Senior guard Antonio Fitzgerald (Danville, VA), scored 19 points as Saint Augustine's College gutted out a 63-61 win over CIAA rival N.C. Central for their seventh straight victory on Saturday, January 13, 2007, at McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium.
Senior guard-forward Claude Neeley (Tallahassee, FL), added 13 points and senior guard-forward Nicholas King (Philadelphia, PA), scored 12 points for the Falcons, who won for the first time when scoring less than 70 points this season. The Falcons are 1-3 when they score less than 70 points.
The Falcons (10-4, 6-2 CIAA, 2-0 Western Division) won with a trapping defense which held the Eagles to 61 points, the second-lowest total by a Falcons' opponent this season. Geoffrey Hansley led NCCU with a game-high 21 points, Chris Mayshack added 19 including 5 of 8 3-pointers and Jason Hervey scored 10 points. Bryan Ayala led the Eagles (6-7, 2-5 CIAA, 0-2 Western Division) with 10 assists.
The score was tied 50-50 with under six minutes remaining, but senior guard Barry Jones (Seattle, WA) swished a 3-pointer with 3:21 left to put the Falcons ahead for good at 53-52. The Falcons made their last six free throws in the final 1:12 of the contest to clinch the win in the televised contest.
The Falcons have won their last three games by a combined total of six points.
The Falcons visit Elizabeth City State on Tuesday, January 16, 2007, at 7:30 p.m. in a battle between CIAA contenders. The teams have not met since the Vikings upset the Falcons 84-73 in the first round of the CIAA Tournament on March 2, 2006.
