The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) named Antonio Fitzgerald and Thomas Hargrove of Saint Augustine’s College its men’s basketball player and coach of the week respectively on Monday, January 1, 2007. The Falcons went 2-0 at the Columbus State Holiday Classic held December 29-30, 2006 in Columbus, GA.
Fitzgerald, a Danville, VA, native, averaged 24 points in victories over Columbus State (80-73) and North Georgia (81-78). The senior guard scored 30 points and grabbed four rebounds against Columbus State on Dec. 29, and he scored 18 points against North Georgia on December 30, 2006, as he helped the Falcons overcome a 21-point second half deficit. His steal in the closing seconds sealed the win against North Georgia.
This is the first CIAA weekly honor this season for Fitzgerald, one of the league’s top players. A returning All-CIAA pick, Fitzgerald currently is the league’s second-leading scorer with a 21.9 points per game average.
Hargrove, in his ninth season at Saint Augustine’s College, won the weekly award for the second straight time this season.
The Falcons, 6-4 overall and winners of three straight games, face CIAA crosstown rival Shaw on Saturday, January 6, 2006 at Broughton High School’s Holliday Gym. The tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
