Senior guard-forward Nicholas King (Philadelphia, PA) led four double-figure scorers with 22 points as Saint Augustine's College rallied from a 21-point second-half deficit to win 81-78 over North Georgia College & State University during the Columbus State Holiday Classic on Saturday, December 30, 2006, at the Lumpkin Center.
Senior guard Antonio Fitzgerald (Danville, VA), sealed the victory with a steal after canning a free throw with five seconds left in the game. His free throw capped a 44-20 spurt by the Falcons, who trailed 58-37 with 15:18 remaining in the second half.
Fitzgerald scored 18 points, senior guard Barry Jones (Seattle, WA) added 17 points and sophomore forward Robert Shuler (Newport News, VA) posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Falcons, who improved to 6-4 overall including their second straight win in two days.
Down 21 points, the Falcons went on a 16-0 run in a five-minute span to pull within 58-53 on Fitzgerald's layup with 11:08 left in the game. The Falcons took their first lead since early in the game at 68-67 on Jones' 3-pointer with 3:34 remaining.
Two minutes later, the Falcons led for good at 74-73 on Fitzgerald's layup in traffic with a minute left. The lead increased to five points on Shuler's steal and dunk and Jones' two free throws.
After Xavier Trice pulled the Saints within 78-76 with a 3-pointer, King made two free throws with 10 seconds left for a four-point Falcons' lead. Shuler fouled Lee Burrell on a 3-point attempt, however, and Burrell made two of three free throws to cut the lead to 80-78 with seven seconds left.
Fitzgerald hit his first free throw for a 81-78 lead with five seconds left. He missed the second free throw, but stole the outlet pass after a Saints' rebound to clinch the win.
The Falcons overcame torrid first-half shooting by the Saints with some hot shooting of their own. The Falcons shot 58 percent from the floor in the second half, the same percentage that the Saints shot in the first half. For the game, the Falcons shot 46 percent compared to 49 percent for the Saints.
Jones sparked the Falcons with 14 second-half points on 4 of 5 shooting, all from three-point range. He made 5 of 7 3-pointers for the game, taking no two-point shots.
Shuler also came up big for the Falcons as he scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds in the second half. Both players were the reasons why the Falcons outscored the Saints 35-11 in bench points.
The contest was a tale of two different halves as the Saints started the game on a 20-9 run en route to a 47-33 halftime lead. The lead grew to 21 in the second half before the Saints cooled off. They shot 38 percent in the second half.
Dustin David led the Saints with 24 points on 7 of 11 shooting including 6 of 10 from 3-point range. Trice scored 19, Jay Anderson scored 12, Burrell chipped in 11 and Anthony Rowe scored 10 for the Saints, who fell to 4-7 after losing their third straight game.
The Falcons won't play again until Saturday, January 6, 2006, when they face CIAA crosstown rival Shaw at Broughton High School's Holliday Gym. The tip-off is set for 7 p.m. |
