Falcons Rip Shaw 85-58 for Ninth Straight Victory

Senior guard Antonio Fitzgerald (Danville, VA) scored 24 points as Saint Augustine’s College thumped CIAA crosstown rival Shaw 85-58, before a packed Holliday Gym crowd of 4,007 fans on Saturday, January 20, 2007. The victory is the Falcons’ third straight win over the Bears.

Senior guard-forward Claude Neeley (Tallahassee, FL) added 14 points and seven rebounds, senior guard-forward Nicholas King (Philadelphia, PA) contributed nine points and six rebounds and junior forward Deon Dixon (Fayetteville, NC) had six points, six rebounds and a team-high six assists for the Falcons, who increased their winning streak to nine games. The 27-point margin of victory is the largest for the Falcons this season.

This marks the second straight season the Falcons routed the Bears in a game designated at Holliday Gym on Broughton High School’s campus. On January 21, 2006, the Falcons won 89-59.

The first meeting this season was much closer as the Falcons won 84-76 on January 6, 2007, at Broughton High School. In Saturday’s rematch, the Falcons shot 52 percent as they opened a 40-30 halftime lead. Their field goal percentage increased to 53 in the second half as they pulled away. For the contest, the Falcons shot a season-high 52.4 percent while the Bears shot 38 percent.

John Kornegay scored 15 points and Cori Gaither added 12 points for the Bears, who committed 21 turnovers.

The Falcons will look to extend their winning streak at Johnson C. Smith on Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at 7:30 p.m.
