Johnson C. Smith Snaps Falcons’ Winning Streak
CHARLOTTE  -
January 23 , 2007

Senior guard Barry Jones (Seattle, WA) scored a career-high 29 points including nine of 11 3-pointers, but Johnson C. Smith edged Saint Augustine's College 80-76 on Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at Brayboy Gymnasium to snap the Falcons' nine-game winning streak. The contest was a battle between two CIAA Western Division contenders.

The Golden Bulls clinched the win when Maurice Hooper swished two free throws for an 80-76 lead with 13 seconds remaining in the game. Hooper was fouled after he stripped Antonio Fitzgerald (Danville, VA) as the Falcons' standout guard attempted a contested game-tying shot in the paint.

With the Falcons down four points, Fitzgerald raced down court and attempted a three-pointer which was blocked seconds before the horn sounded.

The win improved the Golden Bulls' record to 8-5 overall, 6-3 in the CIAA and 1-1 in the Western Division. The Falcons, who tied the Golden Bulls for the best Western Division record last season, dropped to 12-5 overall, 8-3 in the CIAA and 2-1 in the Western Division.

The Falcons are now 11-2 after scoring 70 or more points.

The Golden Bulls led mostly the entire game with the margin reaching double digits at times. But the Falcons stayed in striking distance thanks to Jones, who made six second-half 3-pointers.

Jones finished the night making 10 of 12 total attempts from the floor as he more than made up for the absence of senior guard-forward Nicholas King (Philadelphia, PA), who missed the contest with a groin injury. King averages 17.9 points a game while Jones entered the contest averaging 5.3 points a game. Jones shattered his previous career high of 18 points set against North Carolina Central in January, 2005.

Fitzgerald added 17 points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals in 38 minutes. Senior guard-forward Claude Neeley (Tallahassee, FL) chipped in 11 points for the Falcons, who shot 50.9 percent including a season-high 60 percent in the second half.

Jerry Hollis led five Golden Bulls' scorers with 16 points. Hooper and David Sanders added 14 points, Ryan Scott scored 13 and Edmund Rainey contributed 12 points for the Golden Bulls, who shot 54.4 percent from the floor including 58.1 percent in the first half and 50 percent in the second half.

The Golden Bulls scored 34 points off 24 Saint Augustine’s turnovers and outscored the Falcons in the paint 50-20. The Golden Bulls also made 15 of 18 free throws compared to 8 of 13 for the Falcons, but the visitors countered with 3-point shooting as they made 14 of 20 threes compared to 3 of 12 for the Golden Bulls.

The Falcons will host CIAA rival North Carolina Central at Broughton High School's Holliday Gymnasium on Saturday, January 27, 2007. The contest starts at 7:30 p.m.
