Saint Augustine’s College men rip Livingstone for seventh straight victory
RALEIGH -

Like the Pac-Man video game, the Saint Augustine’s College men are gobbling up opponents.

Livingstone was the seventh straight victim for the high-flying Falcons, who posted an 87-59 basketball victory Thursday night at Emery Gymnasium. The Falcons (13-3 overall, 7-2 CIAA, 4-1 Western Division) are on a roll, beating their last six CIAA opponents including a win over nationally-ranked Johnson C. Smith Jan. 24 since losing to Winston-Salem State Jan. 10. The victory margin was the Falcons’ largest since beating Shaw by 30 points Jan. 21.

The win streak started with a non-conference victory against the University of the District of Columbia Jan. 12 and the Falcons haven’t looked back since. Against Livingstone, the Falcons never trailed but the turning point came late in the first half when they broke open a close game. Leading 24-23 with 5:33 left, the Falcons scored the last 16 points to take a 40-23 lead into halftime. Junior guard Antonio Fitzgerald and junior forward Nicholas King each scored 6 points to key the spurt.

In the second half, the Falcons led by as many as 33 points to the delight of the capacity crowd who were mostly Saint Augustine’s fans. At one point, the crowd chanted for Quel Ferguson, a 7-0 freshman center, who entered the contest in the final minutes. Ferguson didn’t disappoint, scoring two points on a lay-in which brought a loud cheer from the fans.

Once again, the scoring trio of Fitzgerald, King and junior forward Claude Neeley led the Falcons. Fitzgerald, who leads the CIAA in scoring, poured in 28 points while dishing out 7 assists and grabbing 6 rebounds at the guard position. King, the league’s No. 3 scorer, added 23 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds and Neeley, the CIAA No. 2 scorer and top rebounder at 6-2, contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior guard Wakim White scored 8 points and junior guard Barry Jones added 6 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds.

For Livingstone, three players scored 10 points –Jacolby Poe, Stephen Butler and Terrence Jones. The Blue Bears fell to 4-13 overall, 0-7 in the CIAA and 0-5 in the Western Division. The Falcons shot 50 percent from the floor, the third straight game they shot 50 percent or better. They also made 11 of 19 three-point baskets which is the second consecutive contest they’ve made 11 three-pointers.

The Falcons also won the rebounding category 30-21 including 11-5 on the offensive end. In short, they were clicking in all phases while Livingstone struggled to find an answer against them.

On Saturday, North Carolina Central will be the next opponent to try to slow down the Falcons, the CIAA highest scoring team. In the first meeting Jan. 14, the Falcons won 92-71 but the rematch will be held in Durham on Saturday (Jan. 28) at 7:30 p.m.
