Antonio Fitzgerald (Danville, VA) scored 24 points, Nicholas King (Philadelphia, PA) added 19 points and Jeff Sullivan (Carrolton, AL) had a career-high 18 points as Saint Augustine’s College downed crosstown rival Shaw University 84-76 on Saturday, January 6, 2007, for its fourth straight victory.
Clutch plays by Fitzgerald, King and Derrick Green (Newport News, VA) clinched the victory for the Falcons (7-4, 3-2 CIAA). Ahead 75-74 with one minute remaining in the game, the Falcons outscored the Bears 9-2 for the win.
King scored on a short jumper and Green made two free throws after a Fitzgerald steal for a five-point lead with 33 seconds left. King and Fitzgerald then combined to make five of six free throws in the last 25 seconds.
Fitzgerald led the Falcons with a game-high seven assists, and Sullivan was the team’s rebounding leader with eight. King added seven rebounds.
John Kornegay scored 21 points to lead five Shaw players in double figures. Melvin Smith added 14, Robert Esponosa scored 13 points and Cori Gaiter and Damola Obadina both had 11 points. Obadina also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
King scored 13 points and Fitzgerald added 11 to spark the Falcons to a 40-31 halftime lead. The Falcons led 68-55 with seven minutes left on Fitzgerald’s layup before the Bears rallied.
The Falcons shot 45 percent from the floor including a season-high 56 percent in the second half. The Bears shot 43 percent and won the rebounding battle 47-34 including 17-9 on the offensive end.
The Falcons are 7-1 when scoring 70 or more points.
