Win over Livingstone keeps Falcons atop Western Division
SALISBURY –

The Saint Augustine’s men did their part. Now all they can do is wait.

The visiting Falcons toppled Livingstone 72-62 Saturday to remain atop the CIAA Western Division standings. Next week will determine if they win the division crown outright.

The Falcons, 8-2 in the division, hold a two-game lead over second-place Johnson C. Smith which is 6-2. While the Livingstone victory completed the Falcons’ CIAA schedule, Smith has two division games left. If the Golden Bulls lose either game, the division title goes to the Falcons.

The Falcons (17-6 overall, 11-5 CIAA) rebounded from Tuesday’s defeat to the Golden Bulls with a workmanlike effort over the underdog Blue Bears (7-19 overall, 2-13 CIAA, 0-9 Western Division) on Saturday. Without CIAA scoring leader Antonio Fitzgerald, missing his second straight game with an ankle injury, the Falcons relied on juniors Nicholas King and Claude Neeley, the other two-thirds of the young gunners, and a defense which forced 22 turnovers.

King, the CIAA’s No. 2 scorer, led both teams with 24 points despite shooting 3 of 10 from the floor. The Philadelphia native visited the free throw line frequently, though, where he went 16 of 19. Neeley, the CIAA’s No. 3 scorer and top rebounder, added 18 points.

The Falcons’ defense offset a rare off night offensively for the CIAA’s top scoring team. Led by Sophomore forward Deon Dixon’s 10 rebounds and 8 points and King’s 9 rebounds, the Falcons outrebounded the Blue Bears 40-31 including 15-7 on the offensive boards.

The Blue Bears stayed pace with the Falcons on senior night for most of the game. The Falcons led 27-23 at halftime but started pulling away late in the game. The key was a ball-hawking defense that forced turnovers and accumulated steals. Neeley and Dixon both led the Falcons with 3 steals.

It all added up to another win for the Falcons, who wrapped up a successful season in the CIAA. Next are two non-conference opponents to help Saint Augustine’s tune up for the upcoming CIAA Tournament. Allen pays a visit Feb. 21 (Tuesday) at 7:30 p.m.
