Saint Augustine’s College made history Tuesday as three Falcons were named to the 2006 All-CIAA men’s basketball team for the first time. While the men achieved a new goal, the women broke a trend as two Lady Falcons made the 2006 All-CIAA women’s team for the first time since 2000.
Antonio Fitzgerald, Nicholas King and Claude Neeley landed on the 12-player men’s team, while LaConya Polk and Valicia Brown were picked for the 12- player women’s squad. Brown, a 5-9 junior guard from Riverdale, Md., was chosen to the women’s squad for the second straight year.
The unique scoring abilities of Fitzgerald, King and Neeley earned them a spot on the All-CIAA team. Dubbed the “young gunners,” they sparked the Falcons to at least a first-place tie in the CIAA Western Division and a 17-6 overall mark. Fitzgerald, a 6-1 junior guard from Danville, Va., leads the conference in scoring with a 22.5-point average and King, a 6-7 junior forward from Philadelphia, Pa., is the league’s second leading scorer at 20 points a clip.
Claude Neeley, a 6-2 junior guard/forward from Tallahassee, Fla., is the CIAA’s No. 3 scorer at 19.2 points a game and is the league’s rebounding leader at 9.2 boards a contest.
Antonio Fitzgerald also ranks third in the league in assists at 4.95 a game and is the league leader in minutes played. He is ranked in the top 10 in 8 league statistical categories.
Nicholas King leads the CIAA in three-point field goal percentage and average of three-point field goals made and Neeley also is the conference’s offensive rebounding leader.
Valicia Brown’s shooting touch from long range placed her on the women’s team for the second time. She averages 15 points a game, ninth best in the league among women, and is fourth in the league in average of three-point field goals made. She ranks eighth in three-point shooting percentage and free throw percentage while corralling 6.2 rebounds a game
An inside scoring threat, LaConya Polk has made an impact her first season with the Lady Falcons. A 6-0 junior forward from Menifee, Ark., Polk is 12 th in scoring at 13.5 points a game and ninth in rebounding at 7.5 boards a contest.
