Senior guard Terrica Morris (Morrilton, AR) scored 17 points for the Lady Falcons, but North Carolina Central University shot 61 percent from the floor to defeat CIAA rival Saint Augustine's College 75-63 on Saturday, January 13, 2007, at McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium.
The loss was the second straight for the Lady Falcons (4-10, 3-5 CIAA, 0-2 Western Division), who got a season-high 14 points and eight rebounds from senior forward Rakenya Haynes (Memphis, TN). The Lady Falcons failed to stop the Lady Eagles, however, as All-CIAA standout Cassie King led the way with 17 points on 8 of 10 shooting. LaQuanda Williams came off the bench to score 15 points on 7 of 8 shooting and starter Jasmine Newkirk scored 11 points on 5 of 10 shooting. Williams led the Lady Eagles with eight rebounds, and LaVonna Hailey was the team's assist leader with six followed by Newkirk with five. Newkirk also grabbed five rebounds.
The 75 points tied a season-high for a Lady Falcons' opponent, and the 61 percent shooting by the Lady Eagles was the highest by a Lady Falcons' opponent this season. Ironically, the Lady Falcons shot a season-high 48 percent.
The Lady Eagles shot 58 percent in the first half to open a 38-31 halftime lead. They outshot the Lady Falcons 64 percent to 52 percent in the second half.
The Lady Falcons, the CIAA's second-best three-point shooting team, shot 40 percent from behind the arc. Morris made 5 of 9 3-pointers as she shot 6 of 12 from the floor.
Morris led the Lady Falcons in scoring for the third straight contest this week. Junior forward Crystal Taylor (Flint, MI) added nine points and sophomore guard Kenyada Wade (Detroit, MI) added eight points. Senior guard Valicia Brown (Riverdale, MD), a two-time All-CIAA performer, scored six points and had three steals after missing two games with an ankle injury.
The Lady Falcons made 15 of 24 free throws compared to 6 of 10 for the Lady Eagles to keep pace. But the Lady Eagles won the rebounding battle 34-21. The Lady Falcons visit CIAA Eastern Division favorite Elizabeth City State on Tuesday, January 16, 2007, at 5:30 p.m. |
