LaConya Polk (Menifee, AR) scored a season-high 22 points, but the Shaw women survived a 61-58 victory over Saint Augustine's College, in a fierce battle between crosstown CIAA rivals at Holliday Gymnasium on Saturday, January 20, 2007.
The Lady Bears (9-7, 5-4 CIAA), the four-time defending CIAA champs, have won 10 straight games over their archrivals. The last time the Lady Falcons (4-12, 3-7 CIAA) defeated the Lady Bears was during the 2000-01 season.
The contest wasn't decided until Na'Keisha Anthony rebounded her missed free throw with four seconds left and Shaw holding a three-point lead. Senior forward Renata Spinks (Jonesboro, LA) had earlier missed a contested three-pointer near the top of the key which could have tied the game with six seconds left.
Anthony led Shaw with 18 points and Celanese Bozeman added 12 points, including two free throws with 16 seconds left to give the Lady Bears a 61-58 lead. Senior guard Terrica Morris (Morrilton, AK) of the Lady Falcons had cut the lead to one with 1:18 left on a three-pointer. Polk grabbed seven rebounds to share team-high honors with Morris, who scored nine points.
Polk scored 11 points in the first half for the Falcons, who jumped out to an 8-0 lead and led 28-25 at halftime. But the Lady Bears gained the lead for good at 40-38 on Anthony's three-pointer with 12 minutes remaining.
The Lady Falcons will visit Johnson C. Smith on Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at 5:30 p.m.
