Late Spurt Lifts Johnson C. Smith Past Lady Falcons

Senior forward LaConya Polk (Menifee, AR) scored a game-high 19 points, but Johnson C. Smith went on a late run to beat Saint Augustine's College 66-55 in a CIAA Western Division contest at Brayboy Gymnasium on Tuesday, January 23, 2007. The loss was the fifth straight for the Lady Falcons, who dropped to 4-13 overall, 3-8 in the CIAA and 0-3 in the Western Division.

Senior guard Valicia Brown (Riverdale, MD) added 11 points and five rebounds for the Lady Falcons, who led 31-30 at halftime. The score was tied 49-49 at the 7:26 mark of the second half after junior guard Erica Knox (Atlanta, GA) made a free throw, but the Lady Falcons were outscored 17-6 down the stretch.

Tiana Pope scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half to lead Johnson C. Smith, which improved to 9-7 overall, 4-5 in the CIAA and 2-0 in the Western Division. She shared team scoring honors with Janai Jackson, who also scored 14 points and had seven rebounds. Rochelle Bodie had 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, and Brittany Sumpter chipped in 10 points for the Lady Golden Bulls, who recovered from a 29 percent first-half shooting performance to shoot 51.6 percent in the second half. The Lady Golden Bulls shot 40.3 percent for the contest.

Senior forward Renata Spinks (Jonesboro, LA) scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds off the bench, and starting junior forward Crystal Taylor (Flint, MI) scored seven points and pulled down six rebounds for the Lady Falcons.

The Lady Falcons lost their second consecutive game after leading at halftime. They shot 36.5 percent for the game including 32 percent in the decisive second half.

The Lady Golden Bulls scored 19 points off 21 Lady Falcons' turnovers and out-rebounded the visitors 44-28 including a 16-4 margin on the offensive boards.

The Lady Falcons will host CIAA rival North Carolina Central in a rematch on Saturday, January 27, 2007, at Broughton High School's Holliday Gymnasium. The tip-off starts at 5:30 p.m.
