Kevin Jones of Saint Augustine’s College led the South team with 10 tackles at the East Coast Bowl played on Saturday, November 25, 2006, at Cameron Field. Jones, a senior middle linebacker, impressed North coach Jim Barker.
“Kevin Jones was all over the field,” Barker was quoted in The Progress-Index (Va.) newspaper. “I thought he played very well.”
Unfortunately, the North defeated the South team 26-24 on a last-second touchdown pass.
Jones was the only Falcon selected to play this year, and the fourth player from Saint Augustine’s College in two years. Jones, from nearby South Hill, Va., got the chance to play in his home state.
A 6-3, 210-pounder, Jones was selected the CIAA defensive player of the year and made All-CIAA first team. The Saint Augustine’s College standout was the NCAA Division II national leader and CIAA leader in total tackles (120) at regular season’s end. He finished his career as the Falcons’ top tackler since the school reinstated football in 2002.
The East Coast Bowl featured 70 of the best Division I-AA, II, III and NAIA football players from 33 different states.
