Saint Augustine’s College captures CIAA men and women indoor track titles
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –

Saint Augustine’s College dominated the field in winning both CIAA men’s and women’s indoor track championships Sunday at Christopher Newport University.

Led by MVPs Joe Kindred and Edgar Bermudez, the Falcons scored 209 points to outdistance themselves from North Carolina Central, which finished second with 93 points. The Falcons’ women, behind MVPs Kimberly Moore and Johnsie Liles, scored 149 points to finish ahead of Bowie State (92 points) and North Carolina Central (83 points).

Kindred of Saint Augustine’s earned most valuable performer honors in the men’s field events after winning the triple jump, finishing second in the high jump and placing fourth in the long jump. Bermudez of the Falcons won the one-mile run and 800-meter run to win the MVP award in the men’s track events. He also was a member of the winning men’s distance medley relay team.

In the women’s events, the Falcons’ Kimberly Moore finished second in the long jump, and third in both the triple jump and high jump to garner MVP honors in the women’s field events. Liles was named MVP of the track events after winning both the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes.

In all, the Falcons crossed the finish line first in 17 events. Winners on the men side for the Falcons included Phillipe DeRosier (60-meter dash), Jamaal Torrance (400-meter dash), Unyime Akpan (60-meter hurdles), Alvin Miles (high jump), Fabian Hutchinson (long jump), the 4x400 relay team including Laurias Eugene, Tim Riley, Miles and Torrance and the men’s distance medley team including Bermudez, Issreal Jaimes, Dwayne Greenidge and Omar Wiggan.

For the women, Saint Augustine’s winners included Jessica Render (60-meter dash), Dana Robinson (800-meter run), Lakischa Fontenot (high jump), Doris Thompson (shot put) and the 4x400 relay team including Liles, Moore, Render and Erica Young.

Akpan, Jermaine Baker and Chris Stephens finished 1-2-3 respectively in the men’s 60-meter hurdles, and Hutchinson, Greenidge, Dennis Boone and Kindred were 1-2-3-4 respectively in the long jump. The Falcons also swept the women’s 800-meter run with Robinson finishing first, Young second and Deborah Scott third.

Wiggan finished second to Bermudez in both the men’s one-mile and 800-meter runs.

The final men team results were Saint Augustine’s 209, N.C. Central 93, Bowie State 44, Livingstone 38, Virginia State 29, Virginia Union 8, Shaw 5, St. Paul’s 1. The women results were Saint Augustine’s 149, Bowie State 92, N.C. Central 83, Virginia State 17, Shaw 17, St. Paul’s 12, Virginia Union 2.
