Saint Augustine’s College wins 2006 CIAA men’s track and field title
PETERSBURG, VA.
April 24,2006

Saint Augustine’s College won the 2006 CIAA men’s track and field championships in convincing fashion Sunday (April 23) at Virginia State’s campus while the Falcons’ women placed second behind champion Bowie State. Individually, Johnsie Liles of Saint Augustine’s was named the meet’s women’s track MVP and the Falcons’ Doris Thompson was selected women’s field MVP.

The Falcons, 2006 NCAA Division II national and CIAA men’s indoor champions, proved to be formidable outdoors as well, thumping second place North Carolina Central by a 212-143 margin while Virginia State finished third with 74.5 points.

The Falcons scored in 13 of 17 events including nine first-place finishes. Philippe Derosier won the 100 dash in 10.70 seconds, and Travon Lee was the 200 winner in 21.39. Jamaal Torrance captured the 400 dash in 46.54 and Unyime Akpan won the 110 hurdles in 14.15. Dwayne Greenidge won the 400 hurdles in 51.62, Fabian Hutchinson won the long jump with a leap of 7.39 meters and Joe Kindred was the long jump winner with a jump of 14.82. The Falcons won the 4x100 relay in 40.32 and the 4x400 relay in 3:13.12.

Depth was the key, however, to the Falcons’ victory. In addition to individual and relay winners, several Saint Augustine’s athletes placed high in their respective events. In the 800 run, Edgar Bermudez was second, and Omar Wiggan and Maurice Miles finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Wiggan and Bermudez were second and third, respectively, in the 1500 run and Jermaine Baker was second in the 110 hurdles. Lee was third in the 400 dash and Issreal James was third in the 5000 run. In the 200, Derosier was fifth and Boone sixth. Boone also finished fifth in the 100.

The Falcons dominated the 400 hurdles as they took the top four places. In addition to Greenidge’s victory, Lurias Eugene was second, Tim Riley was third and Baker finished fourth. In the high jump, Michael Jackson was second and Kindred was third. In the long jump, Greenidge finished second behind Hutchinson and Jackson was fifth. In the triple jump, Greenidge was fourth and Sintell Crew was sixth.

In the women’s events, Liles led the Falcons on the track with victories in the 200 (23.98) and 400 (54.10) dashes, and she ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x400 relay team (3:44.35). In the field events, Thompson was a double winner, capturing the shot put (13.15 meters) and discus throw (41.40 meters). Other Falcons’ winners include Erica Young (800 run/2:21.73), Marquita Davis (100 hurdles/14.30) and Dana Robinson (400 hurdles/59.45).

The Falcons’ women scored 158 points, good enough for second place behind champion Bowie State which scored 176 points. Though Bowie State had more depth, the Falcons made their mark on many events. Davis was fourth in the 100, and Young was second in the 400. Kim Moore had a productive day, finishing second in the high jump, long jump and triple jump events, and she was fifth in the 400.

Lynetta Ragsdale was fifth in both the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles. Lakischa Fontenot was third in the high jump, and Liles was sixth in the long jump. Thompson was fifth in the javelin throw.
