Saint Augustine's College Captures 2007 Men's and Women's CIAA Outdoor Track and Field Titles

Saint Augustine’s College claimed both men’s and women’s 2007 CIAA Outdoor Track and Field Titles at the campus of Virginia State University on April 21, 2007.

The CIAA outdoor championships were the 10th straight for the Falcons’ men and 10th out of the past 11 seasons for the Lady Falcons, who regained the crown after finishing second to Bowie State last year. Overall, Saint Augustine’s has won 28 men’s and 22 women’s CIAA outdoor track and field championships on record.

The men’s competition developed into a two-team race between the Falcons and North Carolina Central. The Falcons scored 244 points to outlast the Eagles, who finished second with 221 points. Virginia State placed third with 35 points.

The Lady Falcons and North Carolina Central also placed one-two, respectively, in the women’s standings. The Lady Falcons scored 216 points to win the championship and the Lady Eagles scored 172 points. Bowie State finished third with 114 points.

Both Saint Augustine’s College and North Carolina Central dominated the individual awards. Omar Wiggan (St. Ann, Jamaica) of Saint Augustine’s College was named men’s track most valuable performer and Mark Davis of North Carolina Central was selected men’s field MVP. Johnsie Liles (Austin, TX) of Saint Augustine’s College and Desinia Johnson of North Carolina Central were co-winners of the women’s track MVP and Kwonya Ferguson (Melbourne, FL) of Saint Augustine’s College was chosen women’s field MVP.

Wiggan won the 1,500 and 5,000 runs, and was fourth in the 800. Ferguson won the long and triple jumps, and was second in the high jumps, third in the javelin throw and eighth in the shot put. Liles, honored for the third consecutive year, won the 200 and 400 dashes.

For the Falcons’ men, Philippe DeRosier (Columbia, MD) won the 100 and 200 dashes, Dior Lowry (Philadelphia, PA) won the 110 hurdles and Tim Riley (Temple Hills, MD) won the 400 hurdles. Michael Jackson (Bamberg, SC) won the long jump and was third in the high jump, and Andre Tillman won the triple jump. The Falcons’ men won the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Jermaine Baker (Goldsboro, NC) was second in the 110 and 400 hurdles, and Joe Kindred (Fuquay-Varina, NC) was second in the long jump and high jump. Kendall Stevens (Lima, OH) was second in the 100, Edgar Bermudez (Colombia) was second in the 1,500 run, Issreal Jaimes (Wilson, NC) was third in the 5,000 run and Jamal Cumberbatch (Barbados) was third in the triple jump.

For the Lady Falcons, Barbara Pierre (Winter Haven, FL) won the 100 dash and was second in the 200 dash. Sharona Brown (Manchester, Jamaica) won the 800, Marquita Davis (Memphis, TN) won the 100 hurdles and Aisha George (Trinidad) won the 400 hurdles. Lakischa Fontenot (Sacramento, CA) won the high jump and the Lady Falcons won the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Camile Gray (Sacramento, CA) was second in the 100 and third in the 200. Treva Hutchinson (Miami, FL) was second in the long jump and third in the 100. Erica Young (Wyatchville, NY) was second in the 400 and third in the 800, and Marsha Rowe (Manchester, Jamaica) was second in the 400 hurdles.
