A successful outdoor track and field season resulted in another coaching honor for George Williams, and regional awards for Jamaal Torrance, Johnsie Liles and Fabian Hutchinson of Saint Augustine’s College. They will be among several athletes and coaches receiving regional awards Wednesday (May 24) at Emporia State University, site of the 2006 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Williams, the Falcons’ legendary coach, was named 2006 Southeast Region men’s coach of the year by U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association which inducted Williams in its hall of fame in 2005. It also named Torrance, Liles and Hutchinson regional winners.
Torrance was named the men’s track winner and Liles was selected the women’s track winner in the Southeast Region. Hutchinson was named the Southeast Region winner in men’s field events.
Torrance and Hutchinson both led the Falcons to the 2006 CIAA Outdoor Track and Field crown. Torrance won the 400-meter dash at the CIAA championships and ranks third nationally with a best of 46.40. Hutchinson is the 2006 CIAA outdoor long jump champion, and his best of 25-0 ½ ranks him fourth among NCAA Division II performers.
Liles was named 2006 CIAA women’s track MVP after leading the Falcons to a second-place finish in the CIAA championships. She won the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes and ran a leg on the victorious 4x400 relay team at the league championships. She has run season-bests of 23.82 in the 200 and 53.41 in the 400.
The Falcons, winners of the 2006 NCAA Division II indoor men’s national title, will attempt to capture the outdoor national crown this weekend.
