Saint Augustine’s College’s Philippe DeRosier, Alvin Miles and the 4x400 relay team won national titles in their respective races Saturday, but Abilene Christian scored four points in the last event to win its fifth straight NCAA Division II outdoor men track and field championship at Emporia State University. Saint Augustine’s, winners of 9 NCAA outdoor men titles, finished runner-up for the fourth time in five years.
Saint Augustine’s led 77.5 to 76 after winning the 4x400 relay race. The Falcons’ team of Lurias Eugene, Tim Riley, Travon Lee and Jamaal Torrance crossed the finish line in 3:08.78. Cory Aguilar of Abilene Christian scored four points in the men’s pole vault, however, to give his team the national title. Abilene Christian finished ahead of Saint Augustine’s 80 to 77.5 and Lincoln placed third with 63 points. No other team scored more than 35 points.
DeRosier led the Falcons with a victory in the 200 dash in 20.86. He also placed third in the 100 dash and helped the men’s 4x100 relay team finish second. Other team members were Dennis Boone, Dwayne Greenidge and Lee. Miles won the 400 hurdles in 50.94.
Edgar Bermudez finished second in the 800 run, Joe Kindred was third in the long jump and tied for seventh in the high jump. Unyime Akpan was fourth in the 110 hurdles, Jamaal Torrance finished fourth in the 400 dash and Fabian Hutchinson placed fifth in the long jump.
In the women’s events, Saint Augustine’s scored 32 points to finish tied for fifth with Mass.-Lowell. The Falcons placed in the top 5 despite bringing 8 women.
Lincoln scored 93 points to win its fourth straight NCAA national crown. Johnsie Liles led the Falcons with second-place finishes in 200 and 400 dashes and was a member of the 4x400 relay team that finished third. Dana Robinson was third in the 400 hurdles. Doris Thompson and Marquita Davis both placed eighth in the shot put and 100 hurdles, respectively.
