Legendary coach George Williams of Saint Augustine’s College received another honor recently.
Williams was named the 2006 CIAA Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year for leading the Falcons to another league championship. This time, it was the Saint Augustine’s men’s team which claimed the 2006 CIAA men’s outdoor track and field championship in Petersburg, Va. Williams, a track and field coaching guru, guided the Falcons to a 69-point victory over second place North Carolina Central.
The award is the latest in a remarkable season for Williams, the school’s athletic director who was head coach of the 2004 U.S. Men’s Olympic team in Athens, Greece.
He was named 2006 CIAA men’s and women’s indoor track and field coach of the year and 2006 NCAA Regional indoor track and field coach of the year. His men’s team also claimed the 2006 NCAA Division II indoor track and field national crown, and both 2006 CIAA men’s and women’s indoor titles.
In October 2005, a groundbreaking ceremony was held to build an on-campus track facility bearing his name. In November 2005, Williams was inducted into the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame, his sixth hall of fame membership.
Williams’ teams have won 28 NCAA track and field championships and over 100 CIAA titles. He has won over 90 coach of the year awards.
