Falcons Open Season With Doubleheader Losses
ORANGEBURG, SC – Saint Augustine’s College began the 2009 baseball season by barely losing to Claflin University on the road in a doubleheader Feb. 7. The Falcons lost 8-7 in eight innings in the first game and 13-10 in the second game.
Alex Howard (Wilson, NC), a freshman third baseman, was 4-for-8 hitting with 5 RBIs in both games combined to lead the Falcons. Wayne Lewis (Charlotte, NC), a freshman left fielder, was 5-for-9 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Rashad Ingram (Charlotte, NC), a sophomore shortstop, was 4-for-8 for with a double and 3 RBIs for the Falcons.
Howard drilled a three-run home run in the first game for the Falcons, who allowed the game-winning run in the eighth inning for the loss. Ingram hit a home run in the second game for the Falcons, who amassed 14 hits in the contest. Ingram, Lewis and Howard each had three hits and combined to score seven of the Falcons’ 10 runs.
The Falcons visit Coker College in Hartsville, S.C., on Tuesday (Feb. 17). The doubleheader begins at 2 p.m.

Falcons Lose 19-2 To Coker College
HARTSVILLE, SC – Visiting Saint Augustine’s College dropped a 19-2 non-conference baseball game to Coker College on Tuesday (Feb. 17) at Tom J. New Field.
At the plate, sophomore centerfielder Joseph Pierce (Wetumpka, Ala.) went 2-for-3 with one run scored for the Falcons. Sophomore shortstop Anthione Shaw (Chicago, Ill.) went 1-for-4 with one RBI, freshman third baseman Alex Howard (Wilson, N.C.) went 1-for-3 and sophomore designated hitter Alejandro Crisostomo (Dominican Republic) went 1-for-3 with a double and one run scored for the Falcons.
Coker evened its record at 6-6 overall.
The Falcons (0-3 overall) host Davis & Elkins College on Saturday (Feb. 21) in a season-opening doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The two teams meet again Sunday (Feb. 22) for a single game at 1 p.m.

Falcons Postpone Baseball Game Against Columbia Union
RALEIGH, NC - The baseball game between Saint Augustine’s College and Columbia Union (Md.) College scheduled for Wednesday (Feb. 18) at USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C., was postponed because of inclement weather.
The contest has yet to be re-scheduled.
The Falcons (0-3 overall) host Davis & Elkins College on Saturday (Feb. 21) in their season-opening doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The two teams meet again Sunday (Feb. 22) for a single game at 1 p.m.
The site of the games is USA Baseball Complex.

Falcons Lose 7-5 To Davis & Elkins In First Game of Twinbill
Second Game Suspended To Sunday Due To Darkness
CARY, NC – Sophomore Ryan Shwedo (Hampton, Va.) paced Saint Augustine’s College with a three-run single, but Davis & Elkins College prevailed 7-5 Saturday (Feb. 21) in the first game of a non-conference baseball doubleheader at USA Baseball Complex. The contest was the season home opener for the Falcons.
The second game was suspended to Sunday (Feb. 22) due to darkness because of technical difficulty with the lights. The game was tied 7-7 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The contest will resume at 12:00 p.m. followed by a scheduled nine-inning game between both teams.
For the Falcons (0-4 overall), freshman Wayne Lewis (Charlotte, N.C.) was 2-for-3 with two runs, and junior Kevin Johnson (Seattle, Wash.) was 1-for-4 with one RBI.
For the Senators (1-6), Brock Watson was 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and Andrew Ford was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Falcons Defeat Davis & Elkins Twice
CARY, NC – Saint Augustine’s College swept Davis & Elkins College 9-8 and 11-4 Sunday (Feb. 22) in two non-conference baseball games at USA Baseball Complex.
Junior Kevin Johnson (Seattle, Wash.) led the Falcons by going 4-for-8 with a double and four RBIs in two games. His RBI single to left field broke an 8-8 tie in the sixth inning of the first game and gave the Falcons (2-4 overall) their first win of the season.
The game, which was suspended Saturday due to darkness, resumed Sunday with the score tied 7-7 in the fifth inning. Sophomore Joseph Pierce (Wetumpka, Ala.) pitched two innings Sunday for the victory.
In Sunday’s second game, sophomore Rashad Ingram (Savannah, Ga.) helped the Falcons gain their second consecutive win. Ingram scattered five hits and recorded eight strikeouts on the mound in a complete nine-inning game, and he went 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs at the plate. Johnson added three RBIs on 2-for-4 hitting for the Falcons, who totaled 22 hits and 15 stolen bases in two games.
With his mother watching in the stands, Ingram went 5-for-9 with a triple, two RBIs, three runs scored and five stolen bases in two games. Freshman Wayne Lewis (Charlotte, NC) was 3-for-6 with a triple, two RBIs and four runs in two games for the Falcons, who host Columbia Union College on Tuesday (Feb. 24) in a re-scheduled doubleheader which was postponed Feb. 18 because of inclement weather.
The doubleheader starts at USA Baseball Complex at 1 p.m.

Falcon Baseball Game Postponed Against Saint Paul’s
RALEIGH, NC – The CIAA baseball doubleheader between Saint Augustine’s College and Saint Paul’s College scheduled for Thursday (March 5) at USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C., at 1 p.m. has been postponed because of wet field conditions.
No make-up date has been set.
The Falcons play again Saturday (March 7) against Alderson-Broaddus College in a baseball doubleheader at Green Road Park in Raleigh, N.C., starting at 1 p.m

Falcons Lose To Columbia Union In Baseball
CARY, NC – Saint Augustine’s College dropped both games to Columbia Union in a baseball doubleheader at USA Baseball Complex on Feb. 24, 2009.
The Falcons lost 4-1 in the first game and 4-3 in the second game. Their overall record is 2-6 after the losses.
Kevin Johnson hit 4-for-6 with two RBIs in both games combined to lead the Falcons. Teammate Ryan Shwedo was 3-for-6 with one RBI.

Alderson-Broaddus Sweeps Falcons In Baseball
RALEIGH, N.C. – Alderson-Broaddus College defeated Saint Augustine’s College 6-2 and 19-5 Saturday (March 7) in college baseball action at Green Road Park.
The Falcons will host Lincoln (Pa.) University on Sunday (March 8) in a baseball doubleheader at USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C. The first game starts at 1 p.m.
In the first game, Kevin Johnson (Seattle, Wash.) and Steven Chambers (Hampton, Va.) each had an RBI for the Falcons. In the second game, Anthoine Shaw (Chicago, Ill) was 2-for-4 with four RBIs including a two-run home run and a two-run double for the Falcons.
Dustin Grace was 6-for-9 with seven RBIs in two games to lead Alderson-Broaddus. In the second game, Ronnie Whitt was 2-for-2 with five RBIs including a grand-slam home run for Alderson-Broaddus.
The Falcons dropped to 2-8 overall and Alderson-Broaddus improved to 6-2 overall.

Falcons Sweep Saint Paul’s In CIAA Baseball
RALEIGH, NC – Ryan Shwedo (Hampton, Va.) hit a grand-slam home run to lead Saint Augustine’s College to an 18-3 victory over Saint Paul’s College on Monday (March 9) in the first game of a CIAA baseball doubleheader at Green Road Park. In the second game, the Falcons won 14-4.
In addition to the home run, Swedo also doubled and tripled in the first game. He led the Falcons with four RBIs in the contest.
Joseph Pierce (Wetumpka, Ala.) went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, Rashad Ingram (Savannah, Ga.) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Anthione Shaw (Chicago, Ill.) went 3-for-3 with a home run for the Falcons in the first game.
Swedo also hit a home run in the second game for the Falcons.
Steve Chambers (Hampton, Va.) was the winning pitcher in the first game, and Wayne Fuller (Pleasant Grove, N.C.) was the winning hurler in second game.
The Falcons amassed 29 hits in both games.
The Falcons (6-8 overall, 2-0 CIAA) have now won four straight games.

Stewart, Wood Hurl No-Hitters For Falcons In Victories
CARY, NC – Pitchers Brandon Stewart (Atlanta, Ga.) and Ryan Wood (Chester, Va.) both pitched no-hitters for Saint Augustine’s College as the Falcons swept Lincoln (Pa.) University 10-1 in the first game and 25-2 in the second game Sunday (March 8) in a baseball doubleheader at USA Baseball Complex.
It is believed to be the first time in recent memory that two pitchers tossed no-hitters for the Falcons on the same day.
The victories improved the Falcons to 4-8 overall while the Lions fell to 0-9 overall.
Stewart threw his no-hitter in the first game. He struck out six batters and allowed one run in seven innings. It is the second no-hitter for Stewart, a sophomore, in his college career. His first no-hitter was last season in a 1-0 victory over Voorhees on April 11, 2008.
Wood, a sophomore, collected seven strikeouts in seven innings in the second game.
Joseph Pierce (Wetumpka, Ala.) led the Falcons with three RBIs on 1-for-2 hitting in the first game. Anthione Shaw (Chicago, Ill), Kevin Johnson (Seattle, Wash.), Josh Bishop (Richmond, Va.) and Wayne Fuller (Pleasant Grove, N.C.) each added an RBI in the first game for the Falcons.

Baseball Doubleheader Against Bible Baptist Canceled
The college baseball doubleheader between host Saint Augustine’s College and Bible Baptist College scheduled for Friday (March 12) at USA Baseball Complex has been canceled due to impending weather conditions.
The Falcons are scheduled to host defending CIAA champion Virginia State University in a doubleheader on Saturday at USA Baseball Complex starting at 1 p.m.
The twinbill is a rematch of last season’s CIAA championship matchup.

Falcons, Trojans Split In CIAA Baseball Doubleheader
PETERSBURG, Va. – Saint Augustine’s College and Virginia State University split a CIAA baseball doubleheader on Saturday (March 22).
The Trojans (5-12 overall, 1-1 CIAA) won the first game 8-3 and the Falcons won the second game 18-5. The loss in the first game snapped a 10-game win streak for the Falcons (13-9 overall, 3-1 CIAA).
Anthione Shaw (Sophomore/Chicago, Ill.) led the Falcons in the first game with a two-run home run.
Wayne Lewis (Freshman/Charlotte, N.C.) smacked a two-run home run in the second game. Ryan Wood (Sophomore/Chester, Va.) pitched a complete game for the victory.
The Falcons host crosstown rival Shaw University on Tuesday (March 24) at USA Baseball Complex in a CIAA doubleheader. The first game starts at 1 p.m.

Falcons Thump Bears Twice In Baseball
CARY, N.C. – Saint Augustine’s College dug itself out of a five-run hole to outlast crosstown rival Shaw University 16-11 in the second game of a CIAA baseball doubleheader Tuesday (March 24) at USA Baseball Complex.
The Falcons (15-9 overall, 5-1 CIAA) also took the first game 9-4 to lead the CIAA standings by two games. They have now won 13 of their last 14 games.
Trailing 5-0 in the second game, the Falcons came to life after a hard tag on Alex Howard (Freshman/Wilson, N.C.) at home plate in the third inning. The tag ignited the Falcons, who scored five runs in the inning. The Falcons amassed 10 more runs in the fourth and fifth innings for a 15-5 lead before holding off a late Bears’ charge.
Anthione Shaw (Sophomore/Chicago, Ill.) led the Falcons with five RBIs on 3-for-4 hitting including a two-run home run over the right field wall in the fourth inning. Kevin Johnson (Junior/Seattle, Wash.) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs including an RBI triple; Rashad Ingram (Sophomore/Savannah, Ga.) went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Joseph Pierce (Sophomore/Wetumpka, Ala.) went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Ingram also was the winning pitcher for the Falcons.
Jeff Cannon led the Bears (6-8, 2-4 CIAA) with three RBIs on 1-for-3 hitting.
In the first game, the Falcons jumped ahead 4-1 in the first inning and steadily built their lead. The Bears tacked on three runs in the seventh inning but never mounted a serious challenge.
Howard went 1-for-3 with three RBIs while Ingram and Pierce both went 2-for-4 with an RBI each for the Falcons. Brandon Stewart (Sophomore/Atlanta, Ga.) scattered six hits in seven innings for the win.
The Falcons amassed 24 hits in two games.
The Falcons will play again Thursday (March 26) at Lincoln (Pa.) University in a doubleheader which begins in Lincoln, Pa., at 1 p.m. In the first meeting on March 8, Stewart and Ryan Wood (Sophomore/Chester, Va.) tossed no-hitters as the Falcons swept the Lions.

Falcons Thump Bears Twice In Baseball
LINCOLN, Pa. – Saint Augustine’s College continued its winning ways Thursday (March 26) with a 16-6 baseball victory over host Lincoln (Pa.) University.
The Falcons (16-9 overall) have won 14 of their last 15 games.
The Falcons needed a big seventh inning to put away the Lions (3-19 overall). They scored eight runs in the final inning on four hits including two home runs. Chris Vette (Sophomore/Hampton, Va.) pitched the entire game for the Falcons, scattering nine hits and recording six strikeouts for the victory.
The second game was cancelled due to inclement weather.
The Falcons play again Friday (March 27) in a CIAA doubleheader at Saint Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Va., starting at 1 p.m.

Falcons-Tigers Baseball Doubleheader Postponed to April 7
The CIAA baseball doubleheader between Saint Augustine’s College and Saint Paul’s College scheduled Friday (March 27) in Lawrenceville, Va., has been postponed to April 7 due to wet field conditions.
The Falcons (16-9 overall) will host doubleheader games on four consecutive days next week starting Monday (March 30) against Virginia State University at 1 p.m.
The Falcons, ranked second nationally in stolen bases, have won 14 of their last 15 games after beating Lincoln (Pa.) University 16-6 Thursday.

Falcons Take CIAA Lead After Sweeping Virginia State
CARY, N.C. – Saint Augustine’s College swept a baseball doubleheader from Virginia State University 9-2 and 9-7 Monday (March 30) to claim sole possession of first place in the CIAA at USA Baseball Complex.
The victories were the 16th in 17 games for the Falcons (18-9 overall, 7-1 CIAA), who combined for 17 hits in both games. Ranked second nationally in stolen bases, the Falcons tallied 14 including two by Rashad Ingram (Sophomore/Savannah, Ga.), who is tied for the Division II national lead. Ingram has 41 steals for the season.
In game one, the Falcons scored five runs in the first inning to erase a 1-0 deficit. They added two runs each in the fourth and sixth innings to win going away. Both Josh Bishop (Sophomore/Richmond, Va.) and Ryan Shwedo (Sophomore/Hampton, Va.) both went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Alex Howard (Freshman/Wilson, N.C.) went 1-for-3 with two RBIs for the Falcons, who won 9-2.
Brandon Stewart (Sophomore/Atlanta, Ga.) scattered six hits in a complete game for the victory. Brandon Crump went 2-for-3 for Virginia State (9-17, 5-3 CIAA), the defending CIAA champion.
In game two, the Falcons used a four-run second inning to erase a 3-0 deficit in the first inning and take a 5-3 lead. The Falcons tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning for a 9-4 lead before holding off a late Trojan rally.
Ingram pitched six innings, allowing eight hits for the win. Joseph Pierce (Sophomore/Wetumpka, Ala.) recorded the save after one inning of relief work.
Pierce, along with Bishop and Howard, drove in two runs. Howard led the Falcons on 2-for-2 hitting. Shaun McEnhimer led the Trojans with three RBIs on 2-for-2 hitting.
The Falcons host their second CIAA doubleheader in two days Tuesday (March 31) when they face Elizabeth City State University starting at 1 p.m. at USA Baseball Complex.

Wood Hurls Two-Hitter In Falcons’ Win Over ECSU
CARY, N.C. – Ryan Wood (Sophomore/Chester, Va.) tossed a two-hitter to lift Saint Augustine’s College past Elizabeth City State University 5-1 Tuesday (March 31) at USA Baseball Complex for its seventh consecutive baseball win.
The Vikings later snapped the Falcons’ win streak with a 9-7 win in the second game of the CIAA doubleheader. The Falcons (19-10 overall, 8-2 CIAA) remained in first place, however, and have won 17 of their last 19 games.
Steven Chambers (Junior/Hampton, Va.) put the Falcons ahead for good 2-1 in the second inning with a two-run double to right field on a 3-2 count. Chambers went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Wayne Lewis (Freshman/Charlotte, N.C.) went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.
Wood carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing two hits. He already has one no-hitter this season.
In the second game, the Falcons trailed 5-2 after three innings, but they scored four runs in the fifth inning highlighted by Joseph Pierce’s (Wetumpka, Ala.) two-run double for a 7-5 lead. But the Vikings (9-18, 2-5 CIAA) scored four runs in the final two innings to come away with the win.
Pierce went 5-for-5 from the plate including a double and two RBIs to lead the Falcons. Anthione Shaw (Chicago, Ill) also drove in two runs.
Hasteen Simmons went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to spark the Vikings in the second game.
The Falcons step out from CIAA play Thursday (April 2) to host Benedict College in a doubleheader at USA Baseball Complex starting at 1 p.m.

Falcons Claim Three CIAA Weekly Baseball Honors
Anthione Shaw, Brandon Stewart and Head Coach Dr. Thomas C. Wood of Saint Augustine’s College won CIAA baseball awards on Wednesday (April 1).
Shaw, a sophomore shortstop from Chicago, Ill, was named CIAA offensive player of the week after batting .500 and knocking in seven runs in three games last week. Shaw drove in five runs on 3-for-4 hitting including a home run and double in a 16-11 win last week over crosstown rival Shaw University in the second game of a doubleheader.
Stewart, a sophomore pitcher from Atlanta, Ga., was selected CIAA pitcher of the week after scattering six hits in seven innings of a 9-4 win over Shaw in the first game of last week’s doubleheader.
Dr. Wood was named CIAA coach of the week for leading his Falcons to a 3-0 record last week. The Falcons, who lead the CIAA standings at 8-2, have won 17 of their last 19 games for a 19-10 overall record.
The Falcons, who lead the nation in Division II in stolen bases with 150, host Benedict College on Thursday (April 2) in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C.

Shaw Leads Saint Augustine’s Past Shaw In Baseball Doubleheader
RALEIGH, N.C. – A player named Shaw sparked Saint Augustine’s College to a CIAA baseball doubleheader sweep over crosstown rival Shaw University on Thursday (April 9) at Lions Park.
Anthione Shaw (Sophomore/Chicago, Ill.) amassed 10 RBIs to lead the Falcons to a 3-2 win in Game 1 and a 20-5 rout in Game 2.
Shaw sparkled in the second game with eight RBIs on 3-for-5 hitting including a three-run home run over the center field fence and a three-run double to center field. He was the hero in the first game with a two-RBI double in the seventh inning which turned out to be the game-winning hit.
The Falcons (22-11 overall, 11-3 CIAA) can clinch at least a share of the CIAA regular-season title with two victories at winless Saint Paul’s College in Sunday’s regular-season finale. With two games left, the Falcons are headed toward their first winning season since 2000. They matched last year’s win total after sweeping Shaw Thursday.
Both Brandon Stewart (Sophomore/Atlanta, Ga.) and Ryan Wood (Sophomore/Chester, Va.) pitched complete games to each improve to 5-0 on Thursday. Stewart hurled a two-hitter and recorded seven strikeouts in seven innings to win the first game, and Wood collected 13 strikeouts and gave up five hits in seven innings for a victory in the second game.
After hitting six home runs against Elizabeth City the day before, the Falcons added four home runs Thursday in the second game against Shaw. In addition to Shaw, Rashad Ingram (Sophomore/Savannah, Ga.), Josh Bishop (Sophomore/Richmond, Va.) and Terry Townsend (Sophomore/Dillon, S.C.) each smacked a home run.
Bishop went 3-for-5 with three RBI and Joseph Pierce (Sophomore/Wetumpka, Ala.) added two RBIs in the second game for the Falcons, who hammered 17 hits in that game. Jerome Herrington homered in the first game and J.C. Cannon hit a home run in the second game for the Bears, who fell to 12-11 overall and 7-7 in the CIAA.

Falcons, Vikings Combine for 12 Home Runs
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Saint Augustine’s College and Elizabeth City State University combined for 12 home runs in two games including 10 in the second game during a CIAA baseball doubleheader Wednesday (April 8) at Holmes Field. The Falcons won the second game 16-12 and the Vikings took the first game 11-9.
Wayne Lewis (Freshman/Charlotte, N.C.) led the Falcons with two home runs, both in the second game. Four Falcons each added a home run including Josh Bishop (Sophomore/Richmond, Va.), Rashad Ingram (Sophomore/Savannah, Ga.), Steven Chambers (Junior/Hampton, Va.) and Kevin Johnson (Junior/Seattle, Wash.).
The CIAA-leading Falcons (20-11 overall, 9-3 CIAA) smacked five of their six home runs in the second game to stop the Vikings (11-22, 4-9 CIAA).
In the second game, Lewis hit a two-run homer in the second inning, and a solo shot in the third inning. Bishop, Ingram and Chambers also homered during a seven-run third inning which ultimately pushed the Falcons to victory.
Billy Kellem and Hasteen Simmons tried to lead a Viking comeback with back-to-back homers in the seventh inning.
Lewis also hit an RBI double in the second game as he went 4-for-5 with four RBIs. Joseph Pierce (Sophomore/Wetumpka, Ala.) added three RBIs on 1-for-4 hitting, Johnson added two RBIs on 3-for-5 hitting and Alex Howard (Freshman/Wilson, N.C.) added two RBIs on 2-for-5 hitting. Bishop drove in two runs on 1-for-3 hitting for the Falcons, who amassed 19 hits which is their second highest total in a game this season.
Simmons led the Vikings with two home runs while Chris Newcomb, Lee Person and Kellum each added a homer in the second game.
In the first game, the Vikings scored four runs in the last two innings to hold off the Falcons in a see-saw contest in which the lead changed hands five times.
Stephen Green hit a three-run homer for the Vikings, and Johnson cracked a two-run homer for the Falcons, who had the potential game-tying run at the plate in the seventh inning.
Johnson, Bishop and Anthony Holloway (Freshman/New Bern, N.C.) each drove in two runs for the Falcons. Green went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Troy Andrews went 3-for-3 with three RBIs for the Vikings.
The Falcons, ranked second nationally in stolen bases, recorded six stolen bases in both games combined.

Falcons Sweep Saint Paul’s To Win CIAA Regular-Season Baseball Title
LAWRENCEVILLE, Va. – Saint Augustine’s College defeated Saint Paul’s College 11-1 and 19-3 on Sunday (April 12) to capture the 2009 CIAA regular-season baseball championship.
Both the Falcons and Virginia State University finished 13-3 in the CIAA, but the Falcons are the CIAA regular-season champions by virtue of the conference’s tiebreaking procedure. In case of a tie, the standings are determined in the following order: head-to-head competition, won-loss percentage in the conference and coin toss.
The Falcons earned the championship by beating the Trojans three out of four games during the regular season.
The Falcons will be the No. 1 seed heading into the 2009 CIAA Baseball Championships, which will be held Thursday thru Saturday (April 16-18) at Virginia State University.
No matter what happens in the tournament, the Falcons (24-11 overall) are guaranteed of their first winning season since 2000. They ended the regular season with five straight wins.

Falcons Fall In CIAA Baseball Title Game For Second Straight Year
PETERSBURG, Va. - Saint Augustine's College capped an outstanding regular season by sweeping the CIAA baseball individual awards on Wednesday (April 15). Shortstop Anthione Shaw (Soph./Chicago, Ill) was named CIAA player of the year, pitcher Ryan Wood (Fr./Chester, Va.) was chosen CIAA rookie of the year and Head Coach Dr. Thomas C. Wood was selected CIAA coach of the year during the 2009 Softball & Baseball Awards Program at Virginia Hall on Virginia State University's campus.
Shaw and Wood were two of nine Falcons on the 24-player All-CIAA team. Outfielder Kevin Johnson (Jr./Seattle, Wash.) and second baseman Rashad Ingram (Soph./Savannah, Ga.) along with Shaw and Wood also earned first-team honors, while pitcher Brandon Stewart (Soph./Atlanta, Ga.), utility player Clyde Fuller (Sr./Pleasant Grove, N.C.), catcher Josh Bishop (Soph/Richmond, Va.), first baseman Ryan Swedo (Soph./Hampton, Va.) and third baseman Alex Howard (Fr./Wilson, N.C.) made the second team. The Falcons placed the most players on the All-CIAA squads.
Catcher Antoinette Bailey (Sr./Detroit, Mich) and outfielder Diamond Andrews (Jr./Detroit, Mich.) of the Lady Falcons were named to the 2009 All-CIAA softball second team. The Lady Falcons begin postseason play Thursday in the 2009 CIAA Softball Championships.
Shaw ranks among the top 10 nationally in Division II in three categories: runs per game (fifth/1.52), on-base percentage (sixth/.581) and batting average (10th/.485). Wood, a lefty boasting a 5-0 pitching record, has a team high 39 strikeouts, and Dr. Wood (no relation) led the Falcons to their first CIAA regular-season championship since 2005 and first winning season (24-11 overall) since 2000. The Falcons are the top seed heading into Thursday's CIAA Baseball Championships at VSU.
Both Ingram and Johnson gained first team accolades by earning national acclaim on the base paths. Ingram leads the nation in total stolen bases (42) and stolen bases per game (1.31). Johnson ranks seventh nationally and Bishop ranks 13th in stolen bases per game. Howard and outfielder Wayne Lewis (Fr./Charlotte, N.C.) joined Wood on the 2009 All-CIAA rookie team. Lewis ranks fourth nationally in runs per game (1.53).

Falcons Fall In CIAA Baseball Title Game For Second Straight Year
RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine’s College lost to Virginia State University 7-3 on Saturday (April 18) in the finals of the 2009 CIAA Baseball Championships at Colbert Field on Virginia State University’s campus.
This is the second straight season the Falcons lost in the finals to the Trojans, which won their third consecutive CIAA crown. The Falcons, the top-seed entering the tournament after winning the regular-season title, finished 26-13 overall which is the most wins since 1990. The second-seed Trojans improved to 23-24 overall.
The Trojans used a six-run second inning to erase a 2-0 Falcon lead. Trailing by four runs in the ninth inning, the Falcons loaded the bases but failed to score.
Rashad Ingram (So./Savannah, Ga.), Anthione Shaw (So./Chicago, Ill.) and Alex Howard (Fr./Wilson, N.C.) each scored a run for the Falcons. Shaw and Josh Bishop (So./Richmond, Va.) each collected an RBI.
