Falcons Split Baseball Doubleheader With Paine

CARY, N.C. – A solo home run by Alex Howard (So./Wilson, NC) highlighted a 6-4 victory by Saint Augustine’s College Wednesday in the second game of a non-conference baseball doubleheader against Paine College at USA Baseball Complex.

The win avenged a 7-6 loss in the first game to Paine. The Falcons (14-4 overall) will host Davis & Elkins in another non-conference contest starting at 1 p.m. Thursday at USA Baseball Complex. This will be the Falcons’ fourth consecutive home twinbill in four days.

Howard drilled a shot over the left field wall in the fifth inning to stretch the Falcons’ lead to 6-2. The Lions (8-8 overall) threatened in the seventh inning. They scored two runs and had two men on base with two outs. But winning pitcher Kevin White (Jr./Dunn, NC) forced a groundout to snuff the Lions’ rally.

Wayne Lewis (So./Charlotte, NC) led the Falcons with two RBIs and Joe Pierce (Jr./Wetumpka, AL) and Kevin Johnson (Sr./Seattle, WA) along with Howard each added an RBI. White scattered eight hits to improve to 2-1. Chris Alvarez and Zachary Drummond each collected two hits and an RBI apiece to lead the Lions. Brad Freeman gave up six hits and five runs in 2.1 innings for the loss.

In the first game, the Lions staved off the Falcons after taking a 3-0 lead in the second inning. The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Falcons, who got one RBI each from Rashad Ingram (Jr./Savannah, GA), Josh Bishop (Jr./Richmond, VA), Pierce, Lewis and White. Alex Humphrey and Quinton Heath both led the Lions with two RBIs. Charles Wilson of the Lions gained the win and Ryan Wood (So./Chester, VA) suffered his first loss (3-1) after allowing eight hits.
