Sensational jumper Joe Kindred (Sr./Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) of Saint Augustine’s College was chosen 2009 Division II outdoor men’s field athlete of the year by U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Wednesday.

Pierre Sets Division II National Mark in 100 Dash:
Her Time of 11.18 Seconds Among World’s Fastest
SAN ANGELO, Texas – Star sprinter Barbara Pierre (Jr./Winter Haven, Fla.) of Saint Augustine’s College is now the Division II national record-holder in the women’s 100-meter dash after running a blazing 11.18 seconds during Thursday evening’s qualifying at the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Angelo State University.
Pierre ran a personal best to break the old record of 11.20 seconds set by Chandra Sturrup of Norfolk State University in 1993, a mark that stood for 16 years until Thursday. The next closest competitor during Thursday’s qualifying was Samoy Hackett, a freshman from Lincoln (Mo.) University who ran 11.26. Both Pierre and Hackett easily won their heats.
Pierre not only set a Saint Augustine’s College school record, but she ran the 18th fastest time in the world, the ninth fastest time in the nation and the fifth fastest time collegiately in 2009. The top four runners ahead of Pierre on the collegiate list are from Division I schools.
The fastest 100 time in the world in 2009 is 10.92 by 2008 Olympic silver medalist Kerron Stewart of Jamaica. Pierre ran for Haiti in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Pierre easily qualified for the 100 Division II finals, which will be held on Saturday (May 23) at approximately 8:08 p.m. She will be gunning for her third straight Division II national outdoor title in the event.
Pierre broke her personal best by nearly two-tenths of a second. As a freshman in 2007, Pierre won the 100 dash national title in 11.30 in Charlotte, N.C.

Falcons Win 2009 Div. II National Outdoor Men’s Track Crown On Last Event:
Falcons Win 4x400 Relay to Upend Seven-Time Defending Champion Abilene Christian
SAN ANGELO, Texas – Saint Augustine’s College claimed the 4x400 relay in the last event to knock off seven-time defending champion Abilene Christian University and win the men’s national crown Saturday (May 23) at the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Angelo State University.
The Falcons scored 94 points to beat Abilene Christian, which scored 86. Adams State University was third with 75 and Lincoln (Mo.) University was fourth with 53. In the women’s division, the Lady Falcons placed fifth with 38 points. Lincoln (Mo.) gained the women’s crown with 85, edging Angelo State University with 82.
The Falcons won their 10th outdoor men’s title and 31st overall under acclaimed head coach George Williams. This is their first outdoor men’s crown since 2001 when they beat Abilene Christian. Either Saint Augustine’s College or Abilene Christian has won the men’s championship since 1982.
The Falcons, who practiced without a track on campus this season, also won the 2009 Division II national indoor men’s championship in March. They swept both indoor and outdoor men’s national crowns for the first time since 2001.
“This is one of the most amazing championships that we’ve won,” Williams said. “We didn’t have a track and the talent pool wasn’t there like in the past but everything paid off.”
Both teams were tied at 84 points heading into the last event, setting the stage for a dramatic finish similar to 1994 when the Falcons won by one point over ACU, 118-117.
But the Falcons outran the Wildcats in the 4x400 relay to take the crown. The foursome of Alvin Miles (Sr./Kingsville, Texas), Randy Curry (Sr./Atlanta, Ga.), Antonio Abney (Soph./Willingboro, N.J.) and Rashaud Johnston (Sr./St. Louis, Mo.) finished first in 3:06.90 while the Wildcats were seventh.
Miles replaced an injured Scott, who along with the other Falcon trio set the Division II national mark in the 4x400 (3:02.10) at the Penn Relays in April.
Saint Augustine’s College also produced three individual national champions at the championship meet.
Scott became the first Falcon since 1998 to win the men’s 400 dash. Scott beat Dane Hyatt of Lincoln (Mo.) University 45.41 to 45.77 Saturday for his first outdoor 400 title. Ledford Green of Johnson C. Smith University was third in 46.26.
Angelique Smith (Fr./Union City, Calif.) won her first outdoor title when she defeated Kim Prather of Abilene Christian in the women’s 400 dash Saturday. Smith edged Prather across the finish line 54.43 to 54.44.
On Thursday, Joe Kindred (Sr./Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) became a two-time winner in the men’s high jump. Kindred leaped 7-2.25 to defeat Oliver Harsanyi of Western State, who jumped 7-1. Chris Copeland (Fr./Suffolk, Va.) of the Falcons took third at 6-11.75. Kindred, named Division II national and regional outdoor male field athlete of the year, also placed second in the men’s triple jump and third in the men’s long jump.
Barbara Pierre (Jr./Winter Haven, Fla.) placed second Saturday in the women’s 100 dash, snapping her two-year title run in the event. Samoy Hackett of Lincoln (Mo.) was the winner, tying the Division II national record of 11.18 Saturday which Pierre set two days ago in the qualifying round. Pierre ran a time of 11.22 in the finals. She also placed second in the 200.
Ramon Gittens (Soph./St. Michael, Barbados) was second Saturday in the men’s 100 dash, finishing in 10.18. Kawayne Fisher of Lincoln (Mo.) won the race in 10.15.

Two Falcons Awarded Allen Iverson Scholarship
View the Video
HAMPTON, Va. – NBA great Allen Iverson has a reputation as a prolific scorer, but on July 7 he handed out an assist to two promising college basketball student-athletes headed for Saint Augustine’s College.
Iverson awarded scholarships to incoming freshmen Chris Johnson and Nick Chamblee, who will play for Head Coach Lonnie Blow, Jr. on the Falcon men’s basketball team this upcoming season. The official announcement was made during a press conference for Iverson’s Crossover Celebrity Invitational Weekend at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton, Va.
The Allen Iverson Student-Athlete Scholarship was established three years ago to help student-athletes from the Tidewater area cover the cost of a college education. Both Johnson and Chamblee played basketball at Hampton (Va.) High School.
Overcome with emotion, Iverson got choked up while talking about his scholarship program. He says both student-athletes are well-deserving recipients of the scholarship. “To know that I had an impact on their lives, that is everything to me,” said Iverson, a Hampton, Va., native. “Hopefully, I can touch more lives.”
Both student-athletes are grateful for the gift from the dynamic guard. They both thanked Iverson, Coach Blow and Hampton High assistant coach Walter Brower, Jr. during the press conference.
“I consider it a blessing because this money is going to help me during my whole college career,” said Chamblee, a big fan of Iverson who had a 3.8 grade point average in high school.
Johnson remarked: “I am excited because this is going to help me pay for the rest of my schooling. This takes a huge burden off of my family.”
Blow, who was at the press conference, is excited that Iverson picked two student-athletes from Saint Augustine’s College. He is looking forward to adding Chamblee and Johnson to the roster this upcoming season. Johnson averaged 14.1 points a game and Chamblee averaged 12 points a game during their senior season at Hampton High School.
“They are real good students, real good athletes and real good people,” said Blow, who coached the Falcons to 19 wins last season in his first as Falcon head coach. “I am excited about getting them in the fold at Saint Aug.”
Both Chamblee and Johnson are the third and fourth student-athletes from Saint Augustine’s College to claim a scholarship from Iverson. Three years ago, the inaugural scholarship award of $50,000 went to two Saint Augustine’s College basketball student-athletes.
