RALEIGH, NC – Saint Augustine’s College hosts Shaw University on Saturday (Jan. 17) in a women’s basketball rematch between crosstown CIAA rivals. Game time is 5:30 p.m. at Emery Gymnasium.

The Lady Falcons (8-6 overall, 4-4 CIAA, 2-1 Western Division) will attempt to sweep the regular-season series from the Lady Bears (8-6, 4-2 CIAA, 2-1 Western Division). In the previous meeting, the Lady Falcons won 77-71 on Dec. 2, 2008 at Spaulding Gymnasium which ended a 12-game losing streak to the Lady Bears, the defending CIAA champions.

Freshman center Keyona Bryant (Springdale, Md.) led the Lady Falcons with 35 points and nine rebounds in the contest. The Lady Falcons made 27 of 41 free throws while the Lady Bears connected on 12 of 30 free throws.

Saint Augustine’s College Sweeps 2009 CIAA Outdoor Track Crowns

RALEIGH, N.C. – For the third straight year and the 11th time in 12 seasons, Saint Augustine’s College claimed both the men’s and women’s CIAA Outdoor Track and Field championships on Saturday (April 18) at Virginia State University.

The Falcons ran away with the men’s title, scoring 229.75 points to beat second-place Bowie State University, which scored 76.50 points. Virginia State University was third with 72.75 points followed by Johnson C. Smith University with 70.50 points, Virginia Union University with 64.25 points, Livingstone College with 23.50 points, Saint Paul’s College with 18 points and Shaw University with 13.75 points.

The Lady Falcons scored 201 points to earn the women’s crown. Bowie State was second with 125 points followed by Johnson C. Smith with 86 points, Virginia State with 80 points, Shaw with 33 points, Saint Paul’s with 14.50 points and Virginia Union with 5.50 points.

Joe Kindred of Saint Augustine’s College and Elaine Rhoades of Bowie State were named men’s and women’s field most valuable performers, respectively. The field MVP award was the seventh for Kindred during an illustrious four-year career in indoor and outdoor track and field.

Ledford Green of Johnson C. Smith won men’s track MVP and Angelique Smith of Saint Augustine’s College captured female track MVP.

The men’s winners were Ramon Gittens of Saint Augustine’s College (100 dash), Green of JCSU (200 dash and 400 hurdles), Josh Scott of Saint Augustine’s College (400 dash), Johnny Shuping of Saint Augustine’s College (800 and 1500 runs), Geoffrey Langat of Virginia Union (5000 run), Jason Boyd of Saint Augustine’s College (110 hurdles), Kindred of Saint Augustine’s College (high jump, long jump, triple jump), Joffery Alcidor of Bowie State (pole vault), Darien Kearney of Virginia State (shot put), Todd Shelton of Saint Paul’s (discus throw), and Julius Wright of Johnson C. Smith (javelin throw). Virginia State won the 4x100 relay and Saint Augustine’s College won the 4x400 relay.

Scott of Saint Augustine’s College (45.23) defeated Green of Johnson C. Smith (45.81) in the 400 dash in which both athletes ran the fastest times in NCAA Division I and Division II this season.

The women’s winners were Olympic sprinter Barbara Pierre of Saint Augustine’s College (100 dash, 200 dash), Smith of Saint Augustine’s College (400 dash), Kyra Mobley of Saint Augustine’s College (800 run, 1500 run), Racquel Daley of Saint Augustine’s College (3000 run), Shermaine Williams of Johnson C. Smith (100 hurdles), Nikki Boston of Johnson C. Smith (400 hurdles), Andrea Powell of Saint Augustine’s College (high jump), Rhoades of Bowie State (long jump, triple jump), Lakisha Carney of Bowie State (shot put, discus throw) and Brynn Rosser of Virginia State (javelin throw). Saint Augustine’s College won the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
