Wins Elude Lady Falcons At IUP Tourney

INDIANA, Pa. – Saint Augustine’s College lost 3-0 to Lake Erie (Pa.) and 3-1 to C.W. Post on Saturday (Aug. 29) at the Crimson Hawks/Hampton Inn Volleyball Invitational hosted by Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Lake Erie defeated the Lady Falcons (0-4) by a score of 25-22, 25-13, 25-20. The Lady Falcons lost to C.W. Post by a score of 19-25, 11-25, 25-23, 11-25.

The losses were the fourth straight for the Lady Falcons, who dropped 3-0 matches to West Virginia Wesleyan and Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Friday. West Virginia Wesleyan won by a score of 25-22, 25-22, 25-15, and IUP won by a score of 25-7, 25-11, 25-12.

Outside hitter Shakira Carter (Jr./St. Michael, Barbados) tallied 25 kills for the Lady Falcons during the tournament.

Two Lady Falcons Make Wingate All-Tournament Team

Roxanne SmithWINGATE, N.C. – Middle blocker Stephony Newkirk (Jr./Greenville, N.C.) and setter Roxanne Smith (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) of Saint Augustine’s College were named to the 2009 Wingate Classic All-Tournament Team on Saturday (Sept. 5).

Stephoney NewkirkNewkirk had 23 kills and Smith amassed 73 assists in four matches for the Lady Falcons, who lost 3-0 to both Wingate and Anderson (S.C) on Saturday at Wingate University. Wingate won 25-9, 25-11, 25-18 and Anderson won 25-19, 25-18, 25-17.

The Lady Falcons (0-8 overall) host Saint Paul’s College on Wednesday (Sept. 9) in their home opener. The match starts at 6:00 p.m. at Emery Gymnasium.

Lady Falcons Sweep Saint Paul’s For Season’s First WIn

RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine’s College dominated the net in sweeping Saint Paul’s College 3-0 on Wednesday (Sept. 9) in the volleyball home opener for the Lady Falcons, who gained their first victory of the season. The match was played at Emery Gymnasium on campus.

The frontline of Stephony Newkirk (Jr./Greenville, N.C.), Shakira Carter (Jr./St. Michael, Barbados) and Brittany Hicks (Fr./Louisburg, N.C.) led the way for the Lady Falcons (1-8 overall, 1-0 CIAA). Newkirk tallied 17 kills, Carter recorded 15 kills and Hicks had 11 kills.

Roxanne Smith (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) led the Lady Falcons with 20 assists and three service aces, and Hicks added six service aces. Alysia Duffey (So./Springfield, Ill.) had four service aces.

Both Courtney Mosley (Jr./Decatur, Ga.) and Curby Rogers (Sr./St. Paul, Minn.) added eight kills apiece for the Lady Falcons, who won by a score of 25-16, 15-8, 25-12. Christa Mosley and Tekesha Rhodes both collected eight kills to lead the Lady Tigers (1-2 overall, 0-1 CIAA).

The Lady Falcons will play this weekend in the CIAA Round-Up, which will be held Friday through Sunday in Hampton, Va. The Lady Falcons open against defending CIAA champion Elizabeth City State University on Friday at 4:00 p.m.

On Saturday, the Lady Falcons face Virginia Union University at 11:00 a.m., Saint Paul’s College at 3:00 p.m. and Bowie State University at 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, the Lady Falcons meet Virginia State University at 9 a.m. and Lincoln (Pa.) at 1:00 p.m.

Two Lady Falcons Make Wingate All-Tournament Team

HAMPTON, Va. – Saint Augustine’s College gained two victories at the CIAA Volleyball Round-Up on Saturday (Sept. 12). The Lady Falcons beat Saint Paul's College 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-11) and Bowie State University 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-20) at Boo Williams Complex.

Keisha Parris led the Lady Falcons with 12 kills against Saint Paul's, and Stephony Newkirk tallied 10 kills against Bowie State. Roxanne Smith collected 53 assists and Nicolette Campbell had 26 digs in two games for the Lady Falcons, who improved to 3-9 overall.

Saint Augustine’s College does not discriminate based on race, color, nationality or ethnic origin.

Two Lady Falcons Make Wingate All-Tournament Team

RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine’s College pushed Chowan University to five games before succumbing to the Lady Hawks 19-25, 28-26, 21-25, 31-29, 11-15 Tuesday (Sept. 15) in a volleyball match between CIAA Western Division contenders at Emery Gymnasium.

The Lady Falcons (6-10 overall, 6-2 CIAA) fought hard before losing for the first time in six matches. They are the first CIAA team to take Lady Hawks to five games this season.

The Lady Falcons, led by 17 kills from outside hitter Shakira Carter (Jr./St. Michael, Barbados), actually led 7-4 in the fifth game, but the Lady Hawks (12-4, 8-0 CIAA) rallied to remain unbeaten in the league.

Middle blocker Stephony Newkirk (Jr./Greenville, N.C.) added 14 kills and outside hitter Keisha Parris (Fr./St. Catherine, Jamaica) had 10 kills for the Lady Falcons, who also got 43 assists from setter Roxanne Smith (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) and 21 digs from libero Nicolette Campbell (So./Nassau, Bahamas).

The Lady Hawks placed four players in double figures for kills. Victoria Lewis and Nett McCollough led the way with 17 kills apiece, Karina Monroe added 15 kills and Desaray Turner added 14 kills. Monroe also led the Lady Hawks with five blocks and Lewis had 15 digs while Callie Armistead amassed 46 assists.

The Lady Falcons host Johnson C. Smith University in another CIAA Western Division match on Thursday (Sept. 17) at Emery Gymnasium starting at 6:00 p.m. The Lady Hawks visit Fayetteville State University on Sept. 22 at 6:00 p.m.

Lady Falcons Blank Johnson C. Smith 3-0 In CIAA Volleyball

RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine’s College only needed three games (25-21, 25-6, 25-14) to beat Johnson C. Smith University on Thursday (Sept. 17) in a CIAA Western Division volleyball matchup at Emery Gymnasium. Middle hitter Brittany Hicks (Fr./Louisburg, N.C.) led the way with 11 kills and three blocks, and setter Roxanne Smith (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) added 22 assists for the Lady Falcons.

The Lady Falcons improved to 7-10 overall, 7-2 in the CIAA, and 1-1 in the Western Division. The Lady Golden Bulls dropped to 2-11 overall, 2-5 in the CIAA and 0-1 in the Western Division.

The Lady Falcons will host Livingstone College in another CIAA Western Division match on Sept. 21 at Emery Gymnasium starting at 6:00 p.m. The Lady Golden Bulls will travel to Morris College in Sumter, S.C., on Sept. 21 for a non-conference match at 6:00 p.m.

The 25-7, 25-21, 25-13 victory was the second in a row and the eighth in 10 matches for the Lady Falcons, who upped their record to 8-10 overall, 8-2 in the CIAA and 2-1 in the Western Division. Lady Falcons Topple Shaw For Third Consecutive Win

RALEIGH, N.C. – Middle blocker Stephony Newkirk (Jr./Greenville, N.C.) and middle hitter Brittany Hicks (Fr./Louisburg, N.C.) powered Saint Augustine’s College to a 3-0 CIAA volleyball victory over crosstown rival Shaw University on Tuesday (Sept. 22) at Emery Gymnasium.

The win was the third straight and the ninth in 11 matches for the Lady Falcons, who improved to 9-10 overall, 9-2 in the CIAA and 3-1 in the Western Division. The Lady Bears fell to 7-4 overall, 6-2 in the CIAA and 1-2 in the Western Division.

Newkirk led all players with 16 kills and Hicks added 10 kills to spark the Lady Falcons, who won by scores of 25-20, 25-14, 25-19. Earlier in the day, Hicks was named CIAA rookie of the week, and Head Coach Covance Mortimer was named CIAA volleyball coach of the week.

Outside hitter Shakira Carter (Jr./St. Michael, Barbados) added seven kills and 3.5 blocks and middle blocker Courtney Mosley (Jr./Decatur, Ga.) added six kills and 2.5 blocks for the Lady Falcons, who totaled eight team blocks. Setter Roxanne Smith (St. Catherine, Jamaica) contributed 34 assists and four service aces, and libero Nicolette Campbell (Nassau, Bahamas) led the Lady Falcons with 9 digs. Both Monica Grimmage and Nikita Grant led the Lady Bears with four kills each, and Nia Bailey had 12 assists. Jade Bibb chipped in six digs.

With the victory, the Lady Falcons finished their four-match home stretch with a 3-1 record. Now they hit the road for an important CIAA Western Division contest against Fayetteville State University on Thursday (Sept .24) in Fayetteville, N.C. The match starts at 6:00 p.m. The Lady Bears will travel to Fayetteville State on Sept. 30 for a match at 6:00 p.m.

Lady Falcons Sweep Livingstone In CIAA Volleyball

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Saint Augustine’s College entered Thursday’s CIAA volleyball match (Sept. 24) looking to extend its three-match win streak, but was on the losing end of a 25-14, 25-13, 22-25, 25-21 score to Fayetteville State University at Capel Arena.

The loss not only stopped the win streak, but dropped the Lady Falcons’ record to 9-11 overall, 9-3 in the CIAA, and 3-2 in the Western Division. They are currently in third place in the Western Division.

The Lady Falcons got strong play from outside hitter Shakira Carter (Jr./St. Michael, Barbados) with eight kills, and outside hitter Keisha Parris (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) with seven kills and seven digs, but they couldn’t overcome losing their first two sets. The Lady Falcons won the third set, and they stayed close in the fourth set before the Lady Broncos pulled it out to clinch the match.

Setter Roxanne Smith (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) added 26 assists and 10 digs, and libero Nicolette Campbell (So./Nassau, Bahamas) chipped in seven digs for the Lady Falcons.

The Lady Broncos were led by two-time CIAA MVP Chekimbrell Jefferson with a match-high 14 kills and Samantha Meeks added 10 kills. Achari Mainor added 36 assists and Cailee Huffman had 14 digs for the Lady Broncos, who are in sole possession of first place with a 2-0 record in the Western Division. They also upped their record to 7-7 overall and 7-1 in the CIAA.

The next match for Lady Falcons is Sept. 28 on the road against Morris College. The match begins at 6:00 p.m.

Hicks, Mortimer Win CIAA Volleyball Weekly Honors

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) honored middle hitter Brittany Hicks (Fr./Louisburg, N.C.) and Head Coach Covance Mortimer of Saint Augustine’s College on Tuesday (Sept. 22). Hicks was named CIAA volleyball rookie of the week, and Mortimer was selected CIAA volleyball coach of the week.

Hicks won the rookie award after getting 18 kills, posting a .419 attack percentage and recording nine total blocks in two matches last week. She had 11 kills and a .500 attack percentage in a 3-0 win over Johnson C. Smith University on Sept. 17.

Mortimer won the coaching award after leading the Lady Falcons to a win over Johnson C. Smith last week. The Lady Falcons also lost in the same week to Chowan University, which was unbeaten in the CIAA at the time, but the Lady Falcons were the only team to push Chowan to five games until this week. Fayetteville State University beat Chowan in five games on Tuesday (Sept. 22).

This is the first league weekly honor for both Hicks and Mortimer this season.

Lady Falcons Spike Morris In Volleyball

SUMTER, S.C. – Saint Augustine’s College started its two-day road trip to South Carolina with a 3-0 non-conference volleyball victory over Morris College on Monday (Sept. 28).

Middle hitter Stephony Newkirk (Jr./Greenville, S.C.) tallied 11 kills and outside hitter Keisha Parris (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) added nine kills to lead the Lady Falcons, who upped their record to 10-11 overall.

Setter Roxanne Smith (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) was credited with 30 assists, libero Nicolette Campbell had 16 digs, and Courtney Mosley (Jr./Decatur, Ga.) contributed one solo block and four assisted blocks for the Lady Falcons, who won 25-19, 25-19, 25-11.

The Lady Falcons will conclude their visit to South Carolina with a non-conference match against Voorhees College on Tuesday (Sept. 29) starting at 6:00 p.m.

Hicks Wins CIAA Volleyball Rookie Award For Second Straight Week

Middle hitter Brittany Hicks of Saint Augustine’s College (Fr./Louisburg, N.C.) was named CIAA volleyball rookie of the week on Tuesday (Sept. 29) for the second week in a row.

Hicks totaled 19 kills in three matches last week including 10 kills versus Shaw University on Sept. 22. Her attack percentage against Shaw was .692 percent.

For the week, Hicks also recorded seven service aces, 10 digs, three solo blocks and three block assists in three matches.

Lady Falcons Cap Successful Road Trip With Victory

DENMARK, S.C. – Saint Augustine’s College thumped Voorhees College 3-0 on Tuesday (Sept. 29) for its second consecutive volleyball victory in South Carolina.

The Lady Falcons, behind 10 kills from middle hitter Brittany Hicks (Fr./Louisburg, N.C.), won 25-18, 25-6, 25-13. On Monday night, the Lady Falcons beat Morris College 3-0.

Hicks also added three solo blocks and one block assist. Outside hitter Shakira Carter (Jr./St. Michael, Barbados) and Kiesha Parris (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) both added nine kills and setter Roxanne Smith handed out 35 assists for the Lady Falcons, who also got 17 digs from libero Nicolette Campbell (So./Nassau, Bahamas).

With the win, the Lady Falcons evened their overall record to 11-11. They play again Oct. 5 at home against Coker College. The match starts at 6 p.m. at Emery Gymnasium.

Lady Falcons Stop Coker In Four Sets

RALEIGH, N.C. – Middle hitters Brittany Hicks (Fr./Louisburg, N.C.) and Stephony Newkirk (Jr./Greenville, N.C.) led the way for Saint Augustine’s College in a 3-1 non-conference volleyball win over Coker College on Monday (Oct. 5) in Emery Gymnasium.

Hicks paced the Lady Falcons with 16 kills and Newkirk added 14 kills. The Lady Falcons also got key contributions from Roxanne Smith (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) with 39 assists, Nicolette Campbell (So./Nassau, Bahamas) with 14 digs and four service aces, and Wandalee Harris (Sr./Nassau, Bahamas) with 11 digs.

The Lady Falcons improved to 12-11 overall which is the first time they have been over .500 this season. The Lady Cobras, led by Abby Frame with eight kills and Molly Bookhart with 11 assists, fell to 1-18 overall.

The match was a tune-up for Tuesday’s key CIAA Western Division showdown with last year’s league runner-up Fayetteville State University at Emery Gymnasium starting at 6:00 p.m. The Lady Broncos, who lead the Western Division, won the first meeting 3-1 against the third-place Lady Falcons on Sept. 24.

FSU ends Lady Falcons’ Win Streak

RALEIGH, N.C. – Fayetteville State University beat Saint Augustine’s College 3-0 Tuesday (Oct. 6) at Emery Gymnasium to snap the three-match volleyball win streak of the Lady Falcons. The score was 25-23, 25-11, 25-23.

The Lady Falcons were led by outside hitter Shakira Carter (Jr./St. Michael, Barbados) with seven kills and middle hitter Brittany Hicks (Fr./Louisburg, N.C.) with six kills. Roxanne Smith (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) added 18 assists and libero Nicolette Campbell (So./Nassau, Bahamas) added 9 digs for the Lady Falcons.

Samantha Meeks sparked the Lady Broncos with a match-high 12 kills and Chekimbrell Jefferson added 10 kills. Achari Mainor collected 31 assists and tied Cailee Huffman with eight digs for the Lady Broncos.

The Lady Broncos remained atop the Western Division with a 5-0 record. They are 11-7 overall and 9-1 in the CIAA.

The Lady Falcons dropped to 3-3 in the Western Division, 7-4 in the CIAA and 12-12 overall. They are in third place in the Western Division. Their win streak started after losing to the Lady Broncos 3-1 in Fayetteville, N.C., on Sept. 24.

The Lady Falcons play again Oct. 14 at Cheyney (Pa.) University. The match starts at 7:00 p.m.

Two Lady Falcons Earn CIAA Weekly Volleyball Honors

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) honored volleyball players Stephony Newkirk (Jr./Greenville, N.C.) and Brittany Hicks (Fr./Louisburg, N.C.) of Saint Augustine’s College on Tuesday (Oct. 13). Newkirk was named CIAA volleyball player of the week, and Hicks was named CIAA volleyball rookie of the week.

Both players gained recognition this week after playing outstanding against Coker College on Oct. 5. Hicks, a middle hitter/middle blocker, tallied 16 kills and Newkirk, a middle blocker, added 14 kills in the 3-1 win over Coker.

For the week, Hicks had 22 kills and Newkirk totaled 16 kills in two matches. Hicks also had six service aces, four digs, one solo block and two block assists. Newkirk added 2 digs and 2 block assists.

This is the third CIAA weekly award this season for Hicks, and the first for Newkirk.

Lady Falcons Trip Cheyney in Three Sets

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Saint Augustine’s College volleyball team used a balanced effort to beat Cheyney University in three sets on Wednesday (Oct. 14).

Outside hitter Shakira Carter (Jr./St. Michael, Barbados) led the way with seven kills, and middle blockers Stephony Newkirk (Jr./Greenville, N.C.) and Brittany Hicks (Fr./Louisburg, N.C.) both added six kills for the Lady Falcons, who won 25-5, 25-9, 25-7 in the non-conference match.

Libero Nicolette Campbell (So./Nassau, Bahamas) added 12 digs, and setter Roxanne Smith (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) had 14 assists for the Lady Falcons, who improved to 13-12 overall. Wandalee Harris (Sr./Nassau, Bahamas) added seven service aces and six digs, and Smith and Hicks both contributed six service aces apiece.

The Lady Falcons will host Morris College at Emery Gymnasium on Oct. 19. The non-conference match begins at 6 p.m.

Lady Falcons Beat Morris After Slow Start

RALEIGH, NC - Brittany Hicks (Fr./Louisburg, N.C.) and Keisha Parris (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) led a balanced attack for Saint Augustine’s College, which beat Morris College 3-1 in a non-conference volleyball match Monday (Oct. 19) by a score of 19-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-20 in Emery Gymnasium.

Hicks led the Lady Falcons with 15 kills, two solo blocks and four blocking assists, and Hicks added 11 kills and 13 digs. Shakira Carter (Jr./St. Michael, Barbados) finished with nine kills and three blocking assists, and Stephony Newkirk (Jr./Greenville, N.C.) added eight kills and two blocking assists.

Roxanne Smith (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) handed out 38 assists and Nicolette Campbell (So./Nassau, Bahamas) had a team-high 17 digs for the Lady Falcons, who upped their record to 14-12 overall after winning their second consecutive match. Morris College dropped to 8-11.

The Falcons visit CIAA Western Division foe Livingstone College on Wednesday (Oct. 21) in Salisbury, N.C., at 6 p.m.

Lady Falcons Sweep CIAA Weekly Volleyball Awards

Volleyball players Nicolette Campbell (So./Nassau, Bahamas) and Brittany Hicks (Fr./Louisburg, N.C.), and Head Coach Covance Mortimer of Saint Augustine’s College were honored by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) on Tuesday (Oct. 20).

Campbell was named CIAA volleyball player of the week for getting 12 digs against Cheyney (Pa.) University on Oct. 14. This is the first league weekly honor this season for Campbell, who plays the libero position.

Hicks was chosen CIAA volleyball rookie of the week for the second straight week and the fourth time this season. A middle hitter/middle blocker, Hicks had six kills, six service aces, four digs and one block assist against Cheyney.

Mortimer was named CIAA volleyball coach of the week for the second time this season. Counting the 3-0 win over Cheyney, the Lady Falcons entered this week having won 13 of their last 17 matches.

The Lady Falcons (14-12 overall, 7-4 CIAA, 3-3 Western Division) visit Livingstone College on Wednesday (Oct. 20) in Salisbury, N.C., at 6 p.m.

Lady Falcons Stop Livingstone 3-0 In Volleyball

SALISBURY, N.C. – Stephony Newkirk (Jr./Greenville, N.C.) led Saint Augustine’s College with 10 kills in the Lady Falcons’ 3-0 win over Livingstone on Wednesday (Oct. 21) at Trent Gymnasium.

The win was the 15th in 19 matches for the Lady Falcons, who improved to 15-12, 8-4 in the CIAA and 4-3 in the Western Division. The Blue Bears fell to 11-8, 6-8 in the CIAA and 2-7 in the Western Division.

Keisha Parris (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) added 9 kills, Brittany Hicks (Fr./Louisburg, N.C.) had 8 kills and Shakira Carter (Jr./St. Michael, Barbados) contributed 7 kills for the Lady Falcons, who won 25-14, 25-15, 25-19. Roxanne Smith (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) gave out 31 assists and Nicolette Campbell (So./Nassau, Bahamas) led the defense with 16 digs.

Michelle Thompson sparked the Blue Bears with 8 kills and Lakitta Hicks added 7 kills and four block assists. Shannon Allen tallied 17 assists for the Blue Bears.

The Lady Falcons play against Wednesday (Oct. 22) on the road against Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C. The CIAA Western Division match starts at 6 p.m.

Lady Falcons’ Volleyball Win Streak Snapped

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Coker College defeated Saint Augustine’s College in five sets on Saturday (Oct. 24) to break the Lady Falcons’ four-match volleyball win streak. Coker won by a score of 25-19, 25-15, 21-25, 23-25, 15-12.

Shakira Carter (Jr./St. Michael, Barbados) led the Lady Falcons with nine kills, followed by Courtney Mosley (Jr./Decatur, Ga.) and Stephony Newkirk (Jr./Greenville, N.C.) with eight kills each. Keisha Parris (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) had 16 digs, Nicolette Campbell (So./Nassau, Bahamas) added 13 digs, and Roxanne Smith (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) had 33 assists for the Lady Falcons, who dropped to 16-13 overall.

Lisa Ross led Coker with 16 kills and 11 digs, Cynallyhia Indriago added 12 kills and 12 digs, and Abby Frame had 27 assists for Coker, which improved to 3-22 overall.

The Lady Falcons face archrival Shaw University in a CIAA Western Division match at Spaulding Gymnasium on Tuesday (Oct. 27).

Lady Falcons Outlast Lady Bears In Five-Set Volleyball Thriller

RALEIGH, N.C. – Stephony Newkirk (Jr./Greenville, N.C.) recorded Saint Augustine’s College’s last five kills to give the Lady Falcons a thrilling five-set victory over archrival Shaw University on Thursday (Oct. 27) at Spaulding Gymnasium. The final score was 17-25, 25-14, 25-19, 23-25, 15-11.

Newkirk’s heroics allowed the Lady Falcons to pull away from an 8-8 tie in the fifth set. She finished with a match-high 16 kills for the Lady Falcons, who improved to 17-13 overall, 10-4 in the CIAA and 6-3 in the Western Division.

Keisha Parris (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) and Brittany Hicks (Fr./Louisburg, N.C.) both added nine kills, and Shakira Carter (Jr./St. Michael, Barbados) had eight kills for the Lady Falcons. Parris and Nicolette Campbell (So./Nassau, Bahamas) tied with a match-high 11 digs, and Wandalee Harris (Sr./Nassau, Bahamas) and Roxanne Smith (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) each had 10 digs.

Smith also led the Lady Falcons with 39 assists, and Courtney Mosley (Jr./Decatur, Ga.) added two solo blocks and three block assists.

Sharetta Riggin and Monica Grimmage both had 13 kills for the upset-minded Lady Bears, who dropped to 11-9, 7-8 CIAA and 3-7 in the Western Division. Nikita Grant paced the Lady Bears with 10 digs, and Nia Bailey handed out 26 assists.

The Lady Bears won the first set to the delight of the partisan home fans in the packed gymnasium which included the Shaw pep band and cheerleaders. The Lady Falcons regrouped to take the second and third sets, but the Lady Bears bounced back to win the fourth set which set the stage for an exciting fifth set.

Newkirk stepped up in the late stages to spark the Lady Falcons, who played their fifth match in nine days.

The Lady Falcons are in third place and the Lady Bears are in fourth place in the CIAA’s Western Division.

The Lady Falcons host Saint Paul’s College on Senior Day which is Thursday (Oct. 29) at Emery Gymnasium starting at 6 p.m. Harris, a senior defensive specialist, will be honored on the Lady Falcons’ last home match of the season.

Lady Falcons Lose 3-0 To Chowan

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Saint Augustine’s College ended the volleyball regular season with a 3-0 loss to Chowan University on Saturday (Oct. 31) at the Helms Center.

The Lady Falcons enter the CIAA Championships on Nov. 6-8 as the No. 3 seed in the Western Division. They concluded the regular season with an 18-14 overall mark, including 10-5 in the CIAA and 6-4 in the Western Division.

With the 25-16, 25-22, 25-20 win, the Lady Hawks clinched the Western Division title and the division’s No. 1 seed entering the tournament. They are 24-8 overall, 14-1 in the CIAA and 9-1 in the Western Division.

The CIAA Championships will be held at the Boo Williams SportsPlex in Hampton, Va.

Lady Falcons Advance To CIAA Volleyball Semifinals

HAMPTON, Va. – Saint Augustine’s College will face Fayetteville State University in Saturday’s CIAA Tournament semifinals at 5 p.m. after going 2-1 in pool play Friday (Nov. 6) at Boo Williams SportsPlex.

The Lady Falcons (20-15 overall) toppled Virginia State University and Virginia Union University 3-0. Their loss came against Western Division champion Chowan University 3-0.

Brittany Hicks (Fr./Louisburg, N.C.) led the Lady Falcons with 13 kills and Roxanne Smith (So./St. Catherine, Jamaica) added 30 assists and 9 digs in a 30-28, 25-23, 25-21 win over Virginia State. Shakira Carter (Jr./St. Michael, Barbados) tallied 11 kills and Smith added 30 assists in a 25-10, 25-9, 25-12 victory over Virginia Union.

Stephony Newkirk (Jr./Greenville, N.C.) had 12 kills and Smith totaled 30 assists against Chowan, which won 25-21, 25-19, 25-22. Nicolette Campbell (So./Nassau, Bahamas) added 12 digs.

Lady Falcons End Volleyball Season With 20 Wins

Saint Augustine’s College advanced to the semifinals of the 2009 CIAA Volleyball Tournament over the weekend at the Boo Williams SportsPlex in Hampton, Va. A loss to Fayetteville State University in the semifinals concluded the Lady Falcons’ season.

The Lady Falcons finished their season with a 20-16 overall record. It was the most victories for the Lady Falcons since they won 25 matches in 2003.
