The Institutional Research (IR) function provides a complex and diverse set of activities designed to enhance administrative decision-making, responds to external accountability demands, informs institutional policy development, and provides the empirical data necessary for institutional planning and budgeting. In the broadest terms, institutional research provides a deeper understanding of the institution, its properties and attributes.
Operationally, IR assumes diverse roles within an institution of higher education and serves to gather, organize, and make sense of data and information pertinent to the institution. It also assists the institution in stepping back, with a measure of objectivity, to reflect analytically upon the meaning and importance of IR findings with regard to its continued stability, quality and growth. Those functions include but are not limited to:
- External reporting
- Institutional Planning
- Institutional-level decision making and policy formulation
