Veteran Broadcaster Picked to Lead University’s Commercial Radio, TV Stations
(Raleigh, N.C., June 19, 2018) – Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) has picked a respected radio air personality and program director to lead WAUG-AM and WAUG TV.
Following a nationwide search, seasoned broadcaster Cy Young will become the next General Manager of the WAUG Network. SAU is one of only a few colleges and universities in the United States to own commercial radio and television stations.
“We are excited that Mr. Young will join the WAUG network,” said Eric Curry, Executive Director for Communications and University Relations. “We are certain that with Cy’s expertise, WAUG will once again become a major player in the Raleigh-Durham radio market.”
Young’s expertise will be beneficial while serving as a mentor for SAU’s students interested in pursuing careers in broadcasting.
Most recently, Young served as a radio personality and program director for WQOK 97.5 and WFXC 107-104, in Raleigh, where his strong leadership resulted in significant ratings and revenue growth. His talents also led him to work in Kansas City, Nashville and Washington D.C.
The SAU alumnus’ broadcasting career has garnered several awards, including:
• Program Director of the Year, Billboard Magazine
• Program Director/Operations Manager of the Year, Black Radio Exclusive (BRE) Magazine
• Radio Station of the Year – K97.5 and Foxy 107-104
• Tom Joyner Award for Air Personality of the Year- Urban Network
Young’s appointment comes months after ABC News Anchor Byron Pitts joined Saint Augustine’s University’s faculty as a Scholar-in-Residence in the Communications department. The broadcast experience between Young, Pitts and Curry boasts a collective 80 years of expertise which will benefit SAU students.
