Born, raised and educated, a native of Durham, North Carolina, Mr. Baker is a true beacon of the passion needed for student life at an HBCU. With a professional background in Student Affairs, working in the areas of Student Activities and Student Success, he has a true passion for the enhancement of HBCU’s and Student Leadership and Development. His professional career started at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC working as a coordinator where he worked in the area of Student Activities in the office of Student Engagement & Leadership. Here he was apart of a team that pushed the limits of Student Activities further than had ever been seen before at NCCU. Most recently he was the Assistant Director in the office of Student Leadership & Engagement at Guilford College, a small Liberal Arts Quaker institution in Greensboro, NC. Here he was tasked with the development of programming, cultural engagement, and enhancing the overall community of the institution. The professional Chairperson for the college’s largest event, Serendipity, a week long expression of student life, pride, and entertainment, Mr. Baker guided his students in fostering record-breaking numbers for the institutions’ events and concerts. His passion and pride for activities and the student experience is attributed to his Alma Mater, North Carolina Central University. Mr. Baker is a proud Alum of North Carolina Central University where he received his B.S. in Childhood Education and Family Relations and most recent is nearing completion of his MPA at NCCU. It was here that his passion has grown in higher education from the time he was a student to now.
Outside of his passions in Higher Education, Mr. Baker is engaged in the development of his community from a community service and social standpoint. In 2018, Mr. Baker was the recipient of the inaugural Spectacular Magazine Emerging Leader of the Year Award. More recently in 2019, Mr. Baker released a scholarship in his name called the Jalen R. Baker Scholarship, that awards students who are actively engaged in their community. He plans is to continue to give this 1,000.00 scholarship away annually. In addition, Mr. Baker is an active member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. were he does a lot of community engagement with his organization.
Mr. Baker lives by a personal philosophy to enhance the academic and social premise of African American & Minority students while engaging and building upon their leadership skills through the creation of co-curricular experiences throughout their collegiate matriculation. Mr. Baker’s number one priority is to enhance the experience of St. Augustine’s University’s student life to an entirely different level that has never been seen before. He comes to the institution with high energy, dedication, and passion to get the job done.
