Suicide Prevention in the Black Community Panel Discussion

February 20 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Suicide Prevention in the Black Community is a panel discussion that addresses the increasing rates of suicide among Black people and the unique mental health challenges they face, and protective factors and how we can support each other.

Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. From 2018 – 2021, the Black population in the U.S. experienced an 18.8% increase in age-adjusted suicide rates and a 39.1% increase among Black persons aged 15-29. Even as suicide rates increase, there remains a stigma around discussing suicide in the Black community or acknowledging it as a public health issue. This panel will share data regarding the impact of suicide in the Black community, discuss the unique mental health challenges experienced by Black Americans, and open the dialogue on how the Black community can take action to curb the rising rates of suicide.
