Our founder’s laid a roadmap for us to follow towards service and excellence. They were intentional about the direction of this great historical institution and now it is up to us to take SAU higher.  In the words of the late great Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “It does not matter how long you live, but how well you do it. Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?”

The Honorable Justice James E.C. Perry, ’66, Chairman, SAU Board of Trustees

As we celebrate the 155th Annual Founders Day on January 27, 2022; it is especially important that we recognize the need to commemorate the thoughts, vision , and philosophy of the founding fathers of Saint Augustine’s University. Since the fist day the foundation stone was laid, Saint Augustine’s University has progressed to become a strong institution for the education of African American students. The Christian roots of the institution were established by its founders and has played an incredibly significant role in the development and sustainability of Saint Augustine’s University.

Founder’s Day celebration allows us to reflect on the beginning of this great institution from its inception in 1867 to its growing legacy 155 years later. As we reflect, it’s also an opportunity to remind ourselves that although the institution has made great strides, it’s imperative that we continue to provide the leadership that ensures its growth for generations to come.

One hundred fifty-five years ago Saint Augustine’s made freedmen students. The Episcopal Church is especially proud to have partnered in this enterprise. The schools motto, “The truth shall set you free” was a north star in 1867, may it and God continue to guide all that you do.

The rich legacy of SAU is one that is robust and special. For our Founders’ Day celebration it’s an honor to not only celebrate the inception of my beloved institution, but to also be graced with the words of someone’s whose legacy I am walking in myself, our Former Miss Saint Augustine’s College, Trustee Magdalene Johnson Obaji!
